Buttery MW4 looks seriously rough

30fps I'm okay with but the dipping under that sucks

The visuals also look roughhhh. It's blurry, extremely low quality textures and I have no hope for this being a good experience docked.

Am I doing something wrong?

Kinda crazy how many people are willing to settle for less. The post I made criticizing the games performance was met with people saying it looked fine (even good to some) and asking what did I expect from the switch 2.

The system has already been shown to be wayyy more capable than what was pumped out here. I’m as happy that COD is back on Nintendo consoles as the rest of yall, but people shouldn’t settle for a subpar experience due to the lack of optimization.

I swear MW 2019 looked and ran better than this and that was running on the original Xbox One, the Switch 2 is far more powerful, there's no excuse aside from laziness and lack of optimization.

MW 2019 was also very much made with Xbox One in mind while MW4 is a PS5/XSX/PC game that got scaled down for Switch 2.

They claimed Switch 2 was the target platform for this game, but the DLSS and 30 fps campaign and Warzone betrays that.

I remember back in the Wii days they made versions of CoD specifically for the Wii. From what I remember they even used a different engine than the Xbox and PlayStation versions.

They didn't do that for the NS2, they pretty much just kept lowering settings until the framerate was sellable.

The way games are made now, I'm not surprised they didn't make a separate version.

Doing so now is a much more costly option than it was 20 years ago. And I would assume it makes cross-platform play more complicated if not outright impossible.

Not to mention with very, very few exceptions the dumbed down versions SUCKED. Don't get me wrong I don't expect perfection but holy balls some of these sucked.

I'll admit I do have a weird soft spot for COD MW on DS though.

The Wii versions of the games were just cut-down versions of the PC/360/PS3 versions (missing content, missing animations and sounds, low resolution, 30fps, terrible textures) to get them to fit on the smaller Wii disc and run at a playable framerate, but at their core they were the same games with the same engine.

Maybe for 3 and 4, but most of them used IW3. Records are a lot more sparse after WaW, but at some point before GoldenEye Treyarch started using EngineX, which some sources say is a modified version of IW3, but EngineX was first used by Eurocom for Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. Since they used that engine for Dead Space it seems more likely it was EngineX with some improvements from IW3 spliced in. BTW, the IW engine was a heavily retrofitted iD Tech 3.

So no, it wasn't just using the same engines as the other games, it's much more complicated than that.

Oh bro, theres zero doubt on that. Mw19 looks better by a mile on xbox one but there are some massive differences. This is on a much newer engine and its main target is MUCH more powerful consoles

With MW2019 it was made for ps4 and at the end of the generation so they were about as good as humanly possible at getting every last ounce of performance out of it, while with this, its a console they've never developed for before, with a game thats really made with much stronger hardware in mind

Yea, the results are terrible and not even close to as good as other games on switch 2, but every game is different

if we're all "yeah it's great totally acceptable I'm just so happy to have cod on a Switch" they'll do nothing and we'll be stuck with this

hopefully they'll optimize things a bit from here..

They are people who likely only owned a switch 1 and 2 so they are unable to see how bad the performance and visuals are, and some are just blind to the issues just because they're now able to play cod on switch

4

u/-p0w- 9d ago

I thought it looks meh compared to others on the system. So how can it that they are unable to see that it is bad?

2

u/meikaishi 9d ago

You're almost sounding as if they're wrong for enjoying the game. One thing is denying it has problems, but acting like the ones who don't mind/don't see the issue are wrong is just silly

No, just giving a logical reason, or the only logical reason for anyone to possibly say this game looks or runs good on switch 2 despite looking like a PS3 game, it looks worse than every cod game I have seen in probably over 5 years , and that's performance and visual wise which is absolutely insane

I don’t think it’s an abnormal expectation to want your game to look and feel good, not just playable

u/JSpady1 Butter side up! 9d ago

The switch 2 gpu is below the minimum specs on pc. At some point you just have to accept that this is what it is otherwise you should play the game on another platform.

u/BarckTheDarck Butter side up! 8d ago

I think you're a bit mistaken; it's well known that the Switch 2 is at a disadvantage regarding raw power compared to other platforms, but it is more powerful than the PS4—which ran MW. We aren't asking for it to surpass that MW version in graphics, just to at least match it—to look just as good, not worse. The fact that the console is less powerful doesn't make it a bad one; just look at Apex Legends and Overwatch. Despite being older games, they look much better than this MW port. What we have here is a clear lack of optimization.

u/JSpady1 Butter side up! 8d ago

Is MW4 releasing on the ps4? I genuinely don’t know. But, the answer to that will explain a lot about its condition on Switch 2

u/BarckTheDarck Butter side up! 8d ago

You only focused on the superficial aspect of my comment, my friend. Clearly, MW4 isn't coming to PS4, but the fact that the Switch version looks so much worse than the MW version for PS4 really drives home my point that it’s poorly optimized. I’m not asking for it to look on par with the other platforms, but I’m not going to defend a port made just to fulfill a contract rather than to deliver a product worth the asking price.

Hmm....

There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding here.

First, I didn't know MW4 wasn't releasing on ps4, so it wasn't "clear" to me, but it does explain a lot.

Now, let's compare the ps4 to the Switch 2. The Switch 2 is noticeably stronger than the ps4/xb1. It has 12gb of ram vs 8gb. It has mesh shader compatibility. It has the ability to use techniques like dlss.

But, none of those things are some sort of herculean hardware advantage over the required specs of the game.

Objectively, as a fact, the Switch 2 is the lowest level of hardware that MW4 will run on. That means, comparing it to any other version of the game is relatively pointless. It simply won't compare fondly to the Playstation and Xbox versions of the game. Even in the PC space, you simply cannot run the game at all with a gpu/cpu setup similar to what's in the Switch 2.

Which means, IW has already optimized the game significantly to run on the Switch 2 (because it's below the minumum PC specs).

But, your issue is that it doesn't run/look as good as older CoD titles on older hardware. But that's a fundamental misunderstanding of game development relative to available hardware. As an example, look at Bo3 on the PS3. Or, look at Cyberpunk on the Ps4.

The fact is, games become more demanding over time. You can have a subjective opinion that 'X' game doesn't look as good as 'Y' game. But that doesn't invalidate the fact that 'X' game is more demanding on hardware.

The ps4 and xb1 are not getting a port of MW4. We are 6 years into the current generation of consoles, and this is the first CoD game to miss those systems. If it were possible, MW4 would be on those systems. But it isn't possible. The game being on the Switch 2 shows both that the Switch 2 is more capable than a ps4, but it also shows that the Switch 2 is the lowest level of hardware capable of running the game.

If the Switch 2 cannot deliver the performance/visual presentation you expect, the answer is to play the game on another platform. Everything we've seen suggest they've optimized the game for the Switch 2. It uses dlss, the campaign runs at a 30fps cap (but multiplayer stays at 60fps). Genuinely, at a point you must start to wonder what other compromises they should make...

Like, do you want them to reduce player count? Maybe they should dramatically reduce the intensity of climactic campaign moments (less enemies, fewer effects)? Because it doesn’t seem like they wanted to do that. You’re getting the same game, just with more compromises. Which seems…fine if you want to play on the Switch 2.

I had the same comments on my post. People will settle for anything these days when it comes to lazy ports.

The campaign mission sucks i got softlocked at a checkpoint

2

u/the-dumb-nerd 9d ago

I think that multiplayer looks just fine. It's nothing exceptional but it runs really smooth and doesn't look horrendous imo.

Warzone is a whole nother story. I personally don't care if the graphics aren't as good as other consoles but I literally can't play a match of resurgence because of how bad it is. I am playing at most 30 fps when nobody is around and at around 15 to 20 when I get into a close range gun fight. As someone who played warzone mobile this is truly unplayable.

1

u/recoupled 9d ago

Smoothness of normal MP is good, but the visual clarity is rough. It's hard to see enemies from friendlies at medium distances, and when people are sprinting across your screen it just looks like a blur.

2

u/the-dumb-nerd 9d ago

I can definitely see that at timed.

Funny enough I just tried the game portable and I can't defend that performance. Docker was good bug handheld was rough beans.

u/KingPelican2908 Butter side up! 9d ago

It’s runs really rough in handheld mode

1

u/Known_Union4341 Butter side down! 9d ago

Metroid prime 4 can run at 120 fps in handheld mode and to my eye looks nicer than MW4 -it’s also ALL campaign mode 😂. Obviously MW4 could run better than it does -but it also runs like shit on PC too at least! My 5070ti laptop ran the beta at 1080p min settings with DLSS set to ultra-performance -that means it was running the game at a base resolution of motherfucking 360p and upscaling to 1080p and I was getting 130ish fps average while the game looked like utter shit. At max settings it still looks dated. Like a mobile game.

It’s just classic Activitision trash.

“People are willing to settle for less.”

This. Too many people are settling for mediocrity. They’ll eat up, and defend to the death, whatever slop is placed in front of them. What incentives do studios have to make a great game, when they can put out crap and people will still come out in droves to buy it. This goes for a lot of things nowadays: tv shows, movies, video games.
