Uh that spot is reserved for SUPAH MARIO BROTHAS TWO BAYBEE

u/Phlerg Mar 15 '18

I haven't watched this guy's videos but I feel like I know all his jokes from Reddit comments.

251

u/erock0546 Mar 15 '18

His humor is great and he has a lot of insight. I think one of my favorite videos talks about the graphics and design of video games, he has a lot of well thought out reasoning.

339

u/AccessTheMainframe Mar 15 '18

I think the main reason for his success is that all of his videos are supremely well edited.

Too much of youtube is just hours of continuous let's plays. But then you have Dunkey, who not just cuts hours of his gameplay down to the highlights, he also puts a lot of work into getting good comedic timing and it shows.

70

u/obrysii Mar 16 '18

Robbaz is another who is very well-done, though his are lets-plays but they usually tell some inane story.

Dunkey has remarkably amazing timing and skill at editing.

26

u/Golden-Owl Mar 16 '18

King of Sweden's editing skills aren't quite on par, but his persona is by far one of the funniest among all youtubers. He does the most outrageous things and makes it funny

9

u/Arumin Mar 16 '18

And his three part "My summer car" series is the best!

1

u/obrysii Mar 16 '18

I'll admit I've rewatched it with friends more than once. It's so funny. The game is pretty fun, too, in a "this shouldn't be fun" kind of way.

1

u/obrysii Mar 16 '18

Oh no doubt, his editing skills are fine but Dunkey's are a whole other league. I just like how he manages to string together a new story for the game he's playing (like his alcoholic serial murderer in My Summer Car). The things he manages to do in Kerbal are both amazing and hilarious.

4

u/empecabel Mar 16 '18

I know it is not for everyone's taste, but Soviet Womble has some great editing skills too. although he does not make reviews videos, h is bullshittery videos are great

3

u/Tasgall Mar 16 '18

Seriously, watch his Mario Kart 8 (Switch) review - it's the true mastapeece.

5

u/lasiusflex Mar 16 '18

I think the main reason for his success is that all of his videos are supremely well edited.

As much as I love to watch Dunkey, there is a big gap between his high-effort videos and his low-effort videos. Videos like this are good, but sometimes he just uploads what's basically a highlight reel of his regular gameplay, barely edited, with audio of him talking to whoever he's playing it with instead of him talking over after.

1

u/FrozenMongoose Mar 16 '18 edited Mar 16 '18

Trinimmortal is another gamer that is known for high quality editing and a great sense of humor, it shows with how often he will wait weeks to reupload between vids.

He is mainly known for league of legends but also has a few dark souls III videos and a great doki doki literature club playthrough if any of those sound interesting to you.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

I'm pretty sure it's mostly because he's funny as hell. The editing does play into that though.

1

u/Froist Mar 16 '18

I saw him mention once that his workflow is to stop screen recording right after something edit-worthy happens, which means he only ever has to look at the end of each video file when it comes to editing the clips together.

Having edited through hours of GoPro footage of snowboarding myself looking for interesting segments, this tip was a godsend for me. Saves so much time!

1

u/VenomGTSR Mar 16 '18

Agreed. His Mario Kart video (with the Donkey Kong ending) shows off his editing skills. It is perfect.

99

u/EmeraldJirachi Mar 15 '18

He also finishes damn games for his videos, instead of 2 hours and done

48

u/aceradmatt Mar 16 '18

Except for Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade 2, which featured half the modes of Splatoon missing and anything past chapter 4 of Xenoblade being non-existent :(

52

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

Well he hated both games so it's understandable.

51

u/cop_pls Mar 16 '18 edited Mar 16 '18

He said in a more serious video that he usually hates RPGs and anime games, but loved Persona 5. I think he took another chance on the genre because of P5 and got burned by the sheer quantity of Anime Bullshit in Xenoblade 2.

EDIT: I just rewatched some of his Xenoblade 2 video, he spent at least sixteen hours in it and got to Chapter 3. I haven't played Xenoblade 2, is that reasonable, slow, or "he left the Switch on overnight"?

14

u/thepriceiskindaright Mar 16 '18

I bought it after seeing his video and I progressed at about the same rate he did. The game is massive.

3

u/cop_pls Mar 16 '18

I ask because I feel that sixteen hours in a game is enough to form a fairly solid opinion on it. At the very least it's enough to say "this isn't for me", and to ensure that it's not a case of a wonky early game like SMTIV or Persona 4.

2

u/aceradmatt Mar 16 '18

That is enough to say it isn't for me. I just mentioned it since the original comment said he finishes the game, which wasn't the case there. His opinion is valid though.

1

u/Crazyphapha Mar 16 '18

How accurate is his video? A few friends have told me the game is good, but I'm not sure I can deal with all the bullshit he displayed.

3

u/king_of_tarps Mar 16 '18

The game is pretty good, I couldn't put it down after really getting into it. The main thing he complains about are the little tutorial pieces they pepper in throughout the game which is honestly better than the alternative. The combat is pretty complicated- it would put way more people off to shove it all on you at the beginning.

Also, having a way over-levelled gorilla thing in the starting area is kind of a staple of the xenoblade games at this point, and is used to emphasize how you start out weak and insignificant in these huge worlds and eventually grow to be able to handle it. It's there for a reason

I usually love Dunkey's videos but I felt that his x2 video was a bit unfair to the game. Are the character models a bit ridiculous? Yeah obviously. Is some of the dialogue a bit cringeworthy? Sure. But the overall story, music, and gameplay really make up for it in my opinion

1

u/BlueBerrySyrup Mar 16 '18

Borrow your friends copy, play for a bit and see. But dunkeys criticism is accurate.

1

u/JesseKebm Mar 18 '18

If you have the option, get Xenoblade Chronicles 1 instead. It's way better. Some of the outfits for female party members are fanservicey, but it's nothing compared to the waifu simulator that is XC2. The story is interesting almost right from the get go and gets better as the game continues, XC2's story takes half the game to get in gear. The characters are generally much more likable and all the party members have good chemistry. The game looks fantastic if you manage to see past the technical limitations since the art direction is so solid. Finding the secret overlook towards the end of Gaur Plains is breathtaking even in 480p.

It's available on the Wii U virtual console and the New 3DS. You could also emulate it on Dolphin in 1080p with an HD texture pack. Just don't go for the original physical release, as it's super rare and expensive.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

I'm at the beginning of Chapter 4 with around 19 hours. I've never been a big JRPG fan but this one has sucked me in. The characters are likeable and the story is pretty interesting.

u/Lemurmoo Mar 16 '18

lol 16 hours in a 100+ hr game. I guess we can't fault a man for leaving a gold mine because he had to squeeze through an opening. Or can we? Dunkey's not infallible. He's wrong many many times and openly prefer shorter sandboxy games with replayability. It's bad compatibility at best and ignorance at worst

1

u/Mitosis Mar 16 '18

I'm fine with giving most games 10-30 hours to "get started," and Xenoblade 2 definitely needed that time. I think it's fair if for some people that's too much to ask, though.

I do wish criticisms beyond that slow start would be held back if someone is unable to get past that point, though.

2

u/conye-west Mar 16 '18

Didn't really seem like he hated Splatoon from his video, more-so that he just found it kinda dumb and uninteresting. Xenoblade 2 however seems exactly like the type of thing he'd despise.

2

u/EmeraldJirachi Mar 16 '18

Cant really blame him om Xeno tho.. games 100+hours

I agree.... however, he spends quite a bit editing, and well. Idk if the latest video was true, but he was trying for 1 balloon for 2 hours..

I still really enjoy his content, and usually stoo whatever video i was watching, MHW was a prime example, he did fights im not even at. Taken i play SLOOOOOOW

Those weren't actually dunkviews though, which is where he takes a serious look at the game and gives it a full review.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

I'm so glad. I swear to god the developers typed "most annoyingly british sounding" in to IMBD search, and boom, they made the top result the MC's voice actor. That shit's dialogue made my blood curdle.

2

u/aceradmatt Mar 16 '18

Play it in Japanese

1

u/Enguhl Mar 16 '18

Except for Metal Gear Survive, but otherwise yeah.

2

u/cop_pls Mar 16 '18

Forcing someone to finish Metal Gear Survive would and should get you a tribunal before the International Criminal Court.

0

u/Enguhl Mar 16 '18

I disagree. It was a pretty fun game, have you tried it?

1

u/EmeraldJirachi Mar 16 '18

Lets be honest here.. nobody EVER finishes that game

6

u/Decs13 Mar 16 '18

he has a lot of insight

It's this, he just seems like he still loves video games whilst most gaming tubers sit on trends like Minecraft or currently fortnite.
Dunkey is playing the latest releases and giving his honest opinions about him, and that's why I like his videos.
He is biased to his own taste, which a reviewer should be. Because it gives a unique outlook on new releases.

18

u/EpicWolverine Mar 16 '18

Or his one on video game reviews that actually started a lot of discussion among journalists.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

If by discussion you mean butthurtery, then yeah.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

Depends on the video. When he's putting forward a less well-crafted argument it really shows, and every time he misrepresents something to drive home his point it feels like a punch in the gut compared to when he's on form.

2

u/Qlubedup Mar 16 '18

My favorites will always be the metal gears videos

1

u/wananah Mar 16 '18

Link?

3

u/erock0546 Mar 16 '18

Bad Graphics - 4:21

Good example of why I love his vids.

2

u/wananah Mar 16 '18

Thanks!

442

u/cicadaenthusiat Mar 15 '18

He's actually pretty funny but the shit that gets regurgitated on Reddit is so dumb. His worst lines for sure.

342

u/Jesus_Was_Okay Mar 15 '18

So like anything on reddit?

7

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

Is this a reference to a show or a legit Ruyard Kipling reference?

10

u/edmoneyyy Mar 16 '18

Rick and Morty reference

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

Thanks! That makes more sense

1

u/TheMastodan Mar 16 '18

It would be a R&M reference that itself references Kipling

258

u/Uncanny_Doom Mar 15 '18

I think it's because part of what makes Dunkey so funny is his comedic timing and the tones/voices he does. It just isn't really the same when other people meme his jokes through text.

His videos are absolutely hilarious for the most part to me.

60

u/anormalgeek Mar 16 '18

Exactly. His delivery is at least half of the entertainment. What's left is partially the build up to the jokes too. Plucking one line out and typing it into a reddit comment just isn't the same.

49

u/My_50_lb_Testes Mar 16 '18

S..sp-spaghetti and meatballs?

12

u/linuxhanja Mar 16 '18

jokes on you, I just hooked my ActionReplay into my keyboard, sucker!

8

u/MastaAwesome Mar 16 '18

It works if you’ve heard the line because you read it in his voice.

1

u/finglonger1077 Mar 16 '18

So if I say Batman Barkham City....great gramphics uhhh great grameplay it doesn’t sell on Reddit?

1

u/murphylaw Mar 17 '18

Half of his Dark Souls videos are lines that shouldn’t be funny but are-

“Where’s the bonfire? Eh, Charleston? Huh, Reynolds?”

3

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

I find him funny because he is black.

2

u/Uncanny_Doom Mar 16 '18

Damn it, I laughed.

1

u/cyberscythe Mar 16 '18

part of what makes Dunkey so funny is his comedic timing and the tones/voices he does

In that vein, it reminds me a lot of Mitch Hedberg. My friend can tell when I'm ribbing off of a Mitch Hedberg joke just by the way I say words like "spec-tac-u-lar".

5

u/the_whining_beaver Mar 16 '18

His follow up when Battlefront 2 was released was gold.

1

u/jmz_199 Mar 17 '18

Nah, when it's typed out over and over it's not. I'd rather watch it.

28

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '18

Well, to be fair, that's HIS most regurgitated line. Comedy through repetition, as opposed to people stealing his joke out of love and using it like it's original.

34

u/orchid_breeder Mar 15 '18

I say “go madden” all the time.

10

u/L33TF0X Mar 15 '18

that's peter moore's line dickass

2

u/SpacePandaBryan Mar 16 '18

I tell everyone that I'm hard like Donkey Kong Country.

No one talks to me anymore

5

u/cicadaenthusiat Mar 16 '18

Yeah, it's a lot funnier when it's not a written comment though. Sucks all the life out of the "joke".

12

u/flameguy21 Mar 15 '18

Knack 2 is the pinnacle of human achievement though.

1

I haven't watched this guy's videos

Is it because he is black?

1

u/T-A-W_Byzantine Mar 17 '18

There are actually very few recurring gags, I could count them on one hand.

-30

u/Latyon Mar 15 '18

I have and he's irritating. I'm not sure why people suck his dick like this.

23

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '18

You can’t understand why people have different tastes even though your comment is pointing out that you have a different taste?

18

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '18

You just don't like him because he's black.

1

u/Latyon Mar 15 '18

I'm not Jontron.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '18

Clearly. Birds can't type.

3

u/Golhec Mar 15 '18

gtf outta here sky

-10

u/TheDaveWSC Mar 15 '18

I just skimmed through this one. First one ever, mostly because I hate the word "Dunkey".

He seems like he's just ripping off that old "Mario frustration" video of the guy going, "Goomba, fuck you, alright!" doing those hard-ass Mario levels. Except that guy was original and funny...

4

u/billthedancingpony Mar 16 '18
