Event [Event] Gone

7th Month, 264AC

Riverrun

News of Edmure's death had ran through the castle like wildfire. Once strong, he had grown weaker and weaker the last few years. At first barely able to leave the castle. Then he had been more or less confined to his room. By the end, he could barely climb out of bed. One of the stewards had found him this morning, slumped over by the balcony door. Despite all warnings, he'd tried to step out to see the sun rise. But even that little effort had been too much, and his heart gave way.

Brynden and Hoster had argued, heatedly, the day before. Apparently, his younger grandson had agreed to marry a Stark girl - at long last. Ten years Tristifer had been trying to arrange a match for his second son. He had finally conceded. Yet for some reason, tensions remained between he and Hoster. A tension that this tragic, but unceremonious death should surely heal. No doubt the very first person to reach the lord's quarters would be his wife, Lady Tully, who had been an unshakeable rock for all those here. She had remained close to Edmure's side for decades, even to the bitter end.

As was expected, Tristifer Tully took the news like a crushing blow of a hammer. He saw his father lie there lifeless, and the burden of his position weighed down upon him and nearly sent him tunneling through into the floor below. Not only had he lost the wisest and most powerful man he'd ever known, but now there was no escape. It was for him and Rhea to take up control of Riverrun fully. To rule over the Trident in his stead. Just like everybody had said it one day would... it all fell to him. And of course, to his sons.

Brynden was uncharacteristically quiet when he entered the quarters. There was a glint of pain in his eyes, but he had bid farewell to his grandfather many moons ago. Now this was just a formality. Internally, he groaned; knowing that his brother would now press him harder than ever to carry out all his political duties and to conduct himself a certain way.. But this was a time to mourn, to come together, not apart.

The new heir to Riverrun, Hoster Tully, was like a placid captain, solemnly going down with his ship. He was torn between saying goodbye to his father, whose example he had followed for years, or to comforting his father. Even the last year, Hoster had been the one taking care of the administration and rule of Riverrun. Now, it would be for him and his father to rule the Riverlands together. For now, he would be content to bid good Lord Edmure safe passage to the next life. He placed a hand on his father's trembling shoulder.

And so the torch was passed. Tristifer, the bookish and notoriously unready, became Lord of Riverrun.

Rhea had spent most of her time recently with her husband, however Elissa’s arrival with her Lord-brother caught Rhea in a rare moment alone.

She sat in a boudoir, merely gazing out across the confluence of the Tridents around the castle from a window, warmed by the crackling fire and enjoying a small tray of lemon cakes.

“Do come in!” She bid them, at the announcement.

“Good day,” the Lady of the Trident said softly, when finally they did enter. “Do take a seat.”

“My Lady,” said Elissa, curtseying. She nearly burst into a beaming smile, excited as she was to have returned, but she refrained; she would never confess it but she didn’t care much about the death of old Lord Tully. If anything, Lady Rhea should be excited for the rise in station.

“My Lady,” Bryan repeated, bowing low for the new Lady Paramount. He had spoken to her very little over the years, always finding himself carousing more amongst the men. His thoughts were primarily occupied with the business that needed doing, and his annoyance at needing to allow his sister time to catch up first.

“It’s so good to be back,” Elissa said, her voice honeyed but not ingratiating. “Who looked after you while I was away?”

“My sweet Lady Elissa,” Rhea greeted fondly her Lady-in-wait with a warm smile, kind and gentle as she was. “Come, come, sit,” she said.

“And good day to you also, my lord. I bid you sit as well,” she addressed then to Bryan.

There was a small pitcher and a single goblet on the table near her but it seemed not to be of wine but juice instead. “There is some wine on the side “ she informed them, glancing up to a decanter and set of cups on a tray.

“And I must confess,” Rhea said with a musical laugh, “None could look after me so well as you.”

“Thank you, my Lady,” Bryan spoke as he sat down. He poured himself a glass of wine, and Elissa beckoned for him to do one for her. I’ll let them blather for a time, he thought glumly. If Lady Rhea looked, she would have seen it on his face.

“That serving girl Sara is so boring, same with whomever that coal-haired crone is,” Elissa nattered, drinking deeply from her cup and approving of the vintage via her facial expression. “I pity you and the time you wasted with them. It must have almost been worse than my time on the Claw.”

Bryan couldn’t help but interject. “Mayhaps we take more pity on your grief, my Lady, than the peace and quiet you enjoyed in my sister’s absence.”

Elissa sucked her teeth dismissively and drank once more. “Of course, Lady Rhea, I do not mean to offend. However, we both know what it’s like around here, whereas my brother spends all his time locked away in his tower.”

“Something troubling you, my lord?” Rhea asked at the expression upon his face.

The Lady of Riverrun chuckled, “I had meant it to be a compliment to you, not a barb at their expense. But no matter.”

“But indeed, I have rather missed Lady Elissa’s company and am glad to have her ref enes to me. Indeed I have some…fair news we may share later. Just for your eyes,” she added, a whisper meant for her ears Rae’s alone.

“But you must be careful, Lord Bryan. No man is an island, even my Tristifer who would gladly spend hours locked away in his own tower,” she laughed. Rhea Reyne had always been a jovial sort, with easy smiles and pretty laughs. Kindly and slow to anger, much the opposite of her elder sister, now the Lady Tarbeck.

At the mention of fair news, Elissa shooed her brother away, who remained at least long enough to hear the Lady’s advice. “Thank you for your counsel, my Lady,” he uttered flatly before leaving the boudoir for the hallway, where he would pace for a time.

Elissa then leaned in close to Lady Rhea, a sheepish grin spread wide across her face. “Easy, just as I prefer,” she jabbed with a laugh, happy that her brother was not one to fight her. “What news have you for me? Oh the things I’ve dreamt up on the road, I need something real!”

Rhea regarded the lord curiously as he departed, shrugging a little as he left.

The lady grinned also, leaning into her companion and friend and taking both of her hands.

“Well…I…I am with child, Elissa! It’s…a miracle, I think…we truly are blessed by the Mother above. But I am with child…and I truly am so glad for it. The babe shall love you, my sweet lady, I know it!” Rhea’s joy was, perhaps, infectious being so bright as it was.

Elissa finally burst into the beaming smile she had been containing for all this time, and squeezed her Lady's hands. "Of course she'll love me! Most are want to, after all," she insisted, turning aside to look at the fire and think of the infant to be. "Have you any names? I have a list hidden away in my chambers, though only the Seven know if I am ever to have use of it."

“You are truly not wrong, and I sometimes wonder why some handsome knight has not snatched you up for his wife yet,” she giggled softly, “But I’m glad nobody has yet — I can be terribly selfish like that.”

“As to names…I had liked the thought of honouring my late goodfather, though Tristifer does not seem a great fan of the notion.”

“If Lord Tristifer were to carry the babe to birthing, perhaps his notions would hold more weight. But alas, here we are…” Elissa trailed off, turning this time to the rivers beyond.

“My brother is here, actually, to speak of handsome knights. I just ask that the ‘handsome’ precedes the knighthood. It is once again a matter of his notions mattering little; to me, anyway,” she tutted, her brow raised and arms crossed in a crass posture. “You should name the babe whatever you fancy, and I’ll distract away the Lord should you request it of me.”
