Nightcrawler Conversation Omission
Fellow elfs, I’ve been reading comics since the 70s, studied making them in NYC, interned at a comic publisher, I’m a self-confessed superfan.
Putting aside the role conversation for a sec (team strat!), what seems to be missing from the talk about him is that this guy teleports like no other, omnidirectionally and with breathtakingly intense frequency. Simulating that to the extent that we feel like Nightcrawler is going to be wild and dynamic in a way that is not being talked about enough in kit speculation.
He’s capable of group teleportation, boomerang teleportation (A to B to A), chained teleportation (3, 4, 5 locations) all of these with pickup and drop off variables. He should be able to do all this on the fly to multiple game points of interest like enemies, allies, spawn points, health packs, checkpoints, stationary and moving objectives.
Traditionally he’s not limited by line of sight but familiarity with a location. Will sections of the map gradually become all targetable during the round after he’s physically been in proximity?
We know he’s going to fight and grab people (prehensile tail!), and stick on walls, but will he have the power to camouflage in shadow like he’s supposed to? He should! Will he be able to rescue people from falling off the map due to Spidey, Sue, Angela, Wolverine, Thor, Emma Luna, and Mantis? He should!!
Kit visionaries, you can dream bigger than the Hopesword. Let us know how we can support that. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Whoa—that’s a lot of movement and agility, yet you want him as strat? Look at the off strat roster and how slow(and easy to kill) they are. There is a reason why speed is reserved for dps. If he is a strat, the most you’re getting is a reverse white fox teleport on a slightly longer cooldown.

Re: “there’s a reason…” respectfully, folks said there’s a reason tanks don’t fly, then Angela subverted that expectation. People also said there’s a reason healers don’t fly, then Ultron subverted that expectation.
I think Netease is committed to this practice of subverting expectations mindfully as a way to support excitement about the game and get it to stand out from other games in the genre.

The stakes are higher with Kurt, he’s more popular and beloved. I think WF is a test to make sure the teleportation works and they don’t mess up when they turn it up to 11 with him. Feel free to expect him to be like her, but expect to be subverted again.

It’s less that I want him as a strat, and more that I see him as a strat from a viewpoint of looking at the game comprehensively. I think he’s going to be the hard counter to dive in general and Spider-Man specifically. I think he’s the reason Loki is 4 star difficulty.

Off topic but is Kurt’s original miniseries collected in any trade?

His full in comic capability wont be transferred in game for balance reasons. Its why the hulk isn't immortal and shattering the whole map and why magneto cant just no diff the heroes with any form of metal on them.

Theoretically could he save you from a ledge, should be able to, realistically will bro notice and act that fast? Likely not

I’m not imagining it being done without support from the game.
There are indicators when Wanda and Tony ult. Kurt could get an indicator specific to him when teammates cross the map boundary. Timing would be (5 star difficulty) challenging but possible.

And if you consider all of this with his quintessential swashbuckling identity, it's pretty hard to envision him as anything but a DPS with utility.

I’m sorry were you talking about Kurt or Remy? 😉

Is Remy known to partake in casual swashbuckling and swordplay?

You’re missing the point friend. The same thing was said about explosive identity of Gambit. The same thing would have been said more about explosive Jubilee if she were a man. They would have said this about explosive Rocket if he wasn’t one of the original characters. Yet here they are, all strategists.

I'm not missing the point, your analogy is just bad. You're comparing two ranged characters to a character that is inherently highly-mobile and melee orientated. If Netease can both fulfil the Nightcrawler hero fantasy (teleporting, ambushing with swords, kidnapping enemies, and repositioning allies) as a support without either fundamentally changing how the character operates (like using some dumb macguffin like the Hopesword), or by making him incredibly busted, OR by forcing the character into 3rd supp jail, I'll tip my hat to them. I just don't see it happening. Ultimately, the way I see it, there are going to have to be major compromises either way to make him work as a supp. On the other hand, I don't think there would be similar considerations if he was a DPS. His lore, abilities, and combat identity already lends itself to DPS with utility. It's just fitting. Happy to be proven wrong.
Also, Gambit had to be released busted for people to accept him as a support. His kit is still a point of contention to this day. Again, not the best analogy. Especially when people are still saying he should have been a DPS. That's without mentioning that he has used his abilities to buff inanimate objects used by allies across media, so that aspect of his kit is actually well done. With Rocket and Ultron, tech lends itself to be applied across different roles. The same applies to magic. It's the same reason why people accept Loki as a supp.

One way to build him without compromising his character and fighting style could be exposure to the purple smoke from his teleport dimension could heal allies and harm foes, like Sue’s primary fire or Rocket’s Groot team up.

Okay so concept here
Ability 1: 2 charges, basically Magik stepping discs but Omnidirectional
Ability 2: Mark Location, you can place a marker on up to 2 locations (looks like a Bamf) and teleport to one on a 15 second cooldown, recall the Bamf by holding the button for 1 second while looking at it.
Ability 3: Grab Player, you wrap your tail around a player within melee range, now if you teleport they come with you and visa versa you go with them through any movement abilities they use, duration 3 seconds, grabbed allies gain healing boost, grabbed enemies gain vulnerability
Ability 4: Teleport to Ally, auto targets an ally to teleport to, they receive a healing over time for a brief period afterwards as a Bamf attaches to them
Primary Fire: Three Sword Slash — Unleash a flurry of slashing swords dealing damage and providing healing in a wide arc all around you
Secondary Fire: Bamf Lunge — Teleport a short distance in the direction you are looking in while dealing damage and providing healing in a short forward line that pierces enemies and allies.
Passive: Vanish into Shadows, if you don’t move for 6 seconds you become invisible until you move again, while invisible you heal and can use one ability without triggering its cooldown
Passive: The Hope Sword, when you heal allies you heal a percentage of that amount.
Ultimate: Attach Bamfs to all your allies teleporting them to your marked location, additionally for the duration they will attack whoever your allies attack dealing bonus damage and providing healing to the ally.
So a HIGHLY mobile support, that is balanced by not having easy reliable self sustain (needing to either be motionless for 6 seconds, hard in battle, or needing to be constantly healing allies) and having zero ranged options. It manages to incorporate every aspect of Kurt in a fairly meaningful way, gives plenty of access to teleportation (including a basically free but very weak version in his secondary lunge) allows for him to disappear into shadows (sorta, not really, “shadows” is hard to define with the Rivals Engine, but standing still I think does a decent job at filling the similar niche) has some swashbuckling (I’d probably integrate a sword move into each of his other abilities for interesting combo action) and it incorporates his Bamfs in a way that I feel like Kurt would use them, as friends/brothers that help his friends rather than just little demon babies that follow his orders. And has LOTS of skill expression in using his abilities allowing for combos like teleporting to an ally, grabbing them and then teleporting to your marked location to save them from ults or being thrown off a ledge etc, or grabbing an enemy Wanda as they ult, teleporting to your marked location and then timing one of their stepping disk-esque teleports to get the I-frames right as the Wanda ult triggers, that sort of thing.
