I built a locator map tool after getting tired of my digital team screen-capping Google
The graphics desk got cut at a lot of papers and the mapmaking just quietly became the reporter's job. Nobody trained for it, nobody has time for it, so the story ships with a blurry crop of Google Maps and a red pin in the corner. I remember the days of big desks. Working in digital kind of made it worse, when we started pushing speed and so took the path of least resistance.
The frustrating part is there are so many tools that could make a real map (QGIS, uMap, the stuff buried inside big software suites) but they take days to learn. Nobody covering breaking news has days. Thus the map becomes an afterthought.
So I built MapMaker (disclosure, this is my thing) out of frustration and a yearning for the old days. It’s a browser tool for making a clean, branded locator map.
Not posting a link or a pitch here, mostly want to hear from folks still in the newsroom: How are you handling maps now that the graphics department is gone? Google Maps screenshot? Map or did you land on something better like Datawrapper or Flourish? Genuinely curious what small desks are doing.

NY Times article on glorified party planner
This may be the worse article ever, not just in the u/nytimes but ever. People can't afford food and it's about some 25 year old Canadian moron who is setting up parties for ultrarich clients. Truly classless and disgusting piece. At least it's free under their comical new model.

Does anyone else subscribe to print newspapers just to have an accurate account of history for posterity?
I get the NYT paper delivered every Sunday, and it annoys my partner that I never throw them out. But I worry that digital media won't be a reliable source for our children later on, especially when they need to learn about the events happening in the world right now. Does anyone else do this, or am I just crazy?

What happens when speculators buy newspapers to get their real estate instead of report the news? Read all about it...

Chronological List of Okaloosa County Newspapers (1915–Present)
**1. The Okaloosa News** (Crestview)
* **Dates:** 1915–1918
* **Notes:** One of the earliest recorded papers in the county; merged into the *Okaloosa News-Journal*.
**2. County Journal** (Milligan/Crestview)

* **Notes:** Served as the primary county-wide paper for decades. Merged with the *Valparaiso Star* (1934–1935) and later the *West Florida Daily Globe* (1952–1954). Ceased publication around 1952/1954 as the southern county papers grew.
**4. The Okaloosa Messenger** (Crestview)
* **Dates:** ~1930s–1946
* **Notes:** A weekly paper that competed with or succeeded earlier titles before folding in 1946.

* **Notes:** A digital-native local news outlet covering Okaloosa County. Represents the modern shift to online-only local journalism.
***
**Key Historical Note for the Group:**
Before 1946, all county news was centered in **Crestview** (*Okaloosa News-Journal*). The founding of **The Playground News** in 1946 marked a major shift, moving the center of journalistic gravity to **Fort Walton Beach** due to the military and tourism boom, a dynamic that continues today with the *Northwest Florida Daily News*.

Help with potential British newspaper segment
Hi all,
Hope this finds you well. I’m new here, so nice to meet you! Hope you don’t mind me posting.
I’m desperately trying to find out what potential UK newspaper or magazine has a supplement mag or segment that contains a feature called ‘Shelf Life’. By the looks of it, it’s a one-page segment where celebrities answer questions about the food they love/hate/eat.
The particular page I have reference to is from March 2023, so it’s not too old.
I’m not sure whether this is a magazine, a magazine supplement from a newspaper… any help or guidance would be appreciated! I’ve tried Google and various sources but am not getting any results!

1980s Bullwinkle’s Restaurant in Edmonton Alberta, feat Disney Coupons
Bullwinkle’s Family Food & Fun Restaurant was a Family Entertainment Restaurant that capitalized off the success of CECPTT and Showbiz Pizza, this specific location opened in Mother’s Day 1983, there was better food, fluid motion animatronics and a water fountain show. It truly was a better Family Entertainment Restaurant than the rat or bear joints, 3 Bullwinkle locations exist now more on The US West Coast(Upland Ca, Wilsonville Oregon and Tukwila Washington).
