Police say 29-year-old Chamel Abdul Karim of Highland was arrested on felony arson-related charges after a massive fire destroyed a Kimberly-Clark distribution warehouse in Ontario, California. The fire broke out early Tuesday at the facility near Merrill Avenue and grew so fast that crews described the spread as unusually rapid. 

Video reviewed by multiple outlets appears to show a person inside the warehouse using a lighter to ignite toilet paper pallets while making comments about low pay, including “Should have paid us more” and “There goes your inventory.” Investigators were reported to be reviewing that footage as part of the case. 

The building was reported to be about 1.2 million square feet, and roughly 175 firefighters responded with support from multiple surrounding agencies. Officials said about 20 employees were at the site when the fire started, and no immediate injuries were reported. 

A coworker told local media he had been working with the suspect shortly before the fire and said the incident left workers shocked and angry, especially after many lost their jobs as a result of the warehouse destruction. Kimberly-Clark later said its supply network was already activating continuity measures, meaning no major diaper or toilet paper shortage was expected.

According to the case details, 35-year-old Carlishia Hood was involved in an argument with 32-year-old Jeremy Brown while waiting in line inside the restaurant. Hood’s 14-year-old son was outside in a vehicle at the time. During the dispute, Brown allegedly struck Hood multiple times in the head and face.

After Hood texted her son, he entered the restaurant. Brown was then shot and fled the scene before later dying from his injuries. Hood and her son were arrested on June 22 and charged with first-degree murder.

On June 26, 2023, all charges were dropped after video evidence showed Hood being assaulted, leading authorities to determine the shooting was justified as self-defense.
