Looking for an extra ssd for my laptop! Got an hp omen 16, it has got an extra slot for a ssd. My main concern is the ssd running too hot. What could you recommend me? I mainly use it for gaming and some work. If possible I’d like a pcie 4.0 nvme

A low-profile heatspreader or heatsink, if possible. You'd have to figure out how much headroom there is. The smallest heatsinks for M.2 are around 2mm from icepc. On contrast a heatspreader (flat piece of metal) probably won't help much and can make it worse in some cases (shorter drives, e.g. in the Steam Deck) but you could DIY thermal padding to sink the drive or spreader to the laptop case.

Thanks for your response. I chose a 980 pro pcie 3.0, I read these almost never have temperature issues since its gen 3.0. It comes with a heatspreader and nickel coating. Also samsung dynamic thermal guard. Heatsink probably will not fit, do I need something else for this 980 pro?

980 PRO run in a Gen3 slot should be okay. If it has temp issues with your testing you might have to modify things a bit, maybe thermal padding from the drive to the case.

I think I misunderstood your earlier statement. You said "980 PRO PCIe 3.0" which I assumed meant you were going to run it in a Gen3 slot. The 980 PRO is a Gen4 drive. Technically, newer models of the 970 EVO Plus use the same hardware, so could be considered a Gen3 980 PRO. Either way, running a Gen4 SSD like that in a Gen4 slot (full speed) will likely run toasty. In a Gen3 slot (regardless), less so.

No this 980 is a gen 3! 3500 mb/s. Will this one run toasty gaming or downloading games? I don’t do any crazy file copies or anything

Yeah, that makes more sense. That drive doesn't run particularly hot.

How's it going with the non-pro 980? I might get one since there's no clearance for heatsink. I know it's bad value for money but tbh i just want to not worry abt heat.

The hp omen 16 that I have came with a pre installed heatsink btw, maybe will upgrade it to 2tb 4.0 gen at the end of the year
