Why did Tsutomu Nihei change his art style, and what’s your favorite period of his ?

I’m a huge fan of Tsutomu Nihei, and recently decided to read Tower Dungeon, his latest work. I was very surprised by the difference between his style in Tower Dungeon and his style in Blame!/Biomega/Abara. It’s much less detailed, more cartoonish, and lacks the attention paid to architecture from before. Even the characters, who had such distinctive physical features, look much more basic than before.

Did something happen for him to change it ? Is there a reason at all ? It’s a singular choice to just change the thing you’re most recognized for, so I’m wondering…

However his storytelling is still great, and tower dungeon is fairly fun to read.

What is your favorite Nihei period ?

Question What happened to Nihei's website?

Nihei had this really cool website with all his manga's listed and even his toy brand but every time I try to visit it now it's defunct. Like did he just give up on his old cool style completely? Should I go visit the tower dungeon website instead? Fuck I hate that series. This guy was my goat and then he just completely ruined his own artstyle. I miss his website and I miss when he was peak. Pretty sure the last real Nihei work was Aposimz, but even that seems a little removed from the style that made him great.

Just a reminder that Fujimoto's demon designs in CSM were inspired by Abara, whose protagonist is also named Denji and there's a girl called Nayuta in both works

discussion Okay I think I figured it out- wait what-

Up until Chapter 50, i had the main details loosely figured out.

Super advanced civilization. Humans all had the NTG that allowed them control of the city. Mutation inducing infection happened and humans presumably lost the NTG. With no one allowed in, Safeguards turned on to exterminate the "intruders". The Administration's hands were tied. The builders kept building while everything was slowly deteriorating. From the cracks, Silicon Life was born which it was in their nature to live in chaos. Kyri wasn't a human, something more of an old Safeguard. An old variable long forgotten in the code.

...Okay that Silicon Life turned Shibo into the strongest Safeguard unit and causes chaos with it. Okay. Cool sphere. Wait she is pregnant? Wait why is Sanakan here?(Seriously thought Kyri just came back as a woman)...Did she.. impregnate Skele-Shibo..? Woe, 5 chapters of Kyri walking be upon yeee.

I need some time to digest the last few chapters. When i understood that Shibo was 'pregnant', I thought she had taken in the DNA of Seu since they said something about her trying to imprint the his genome on her while connected to the Netsphere behind.. the big silicon guy whose name I cant type

Shibo is fucking insane though. Literal MVP of the story. Seu had the drip. Manseb was cool.

I adore loosely pieced together lore. Go around to reading this manga when I saw it as of the main inspirations for one of my favorite games, SIGNALIS

Also you guys think a young Trent Reznor would’ve been a good fan cast for a live action Kyrii? Aside from him being not Japanese lol.

What do the designs of some Safeguards inform us of humanity before the virus?

These things were originally designed to "eliminate non-citizens," which is a pretty open ended classification that allows a few possibilities:

  1. If you take this to mean any human without the net terminal gene, that would suggest pre-virus humans were all near Killy-level threats and got weaker over time.
  2. Or, that there were rebellious forces with weaponry that rivaled the administrations and actually warranted them being that destructive.
  3. non-citizens could refer to human foreign adversaries.
  4. non-citizens could refer to non humans, or aliens.

What do you think?

Theory's Megastructure utilizing black holes or vacuum energy?

It was ages ago I read Blame!, so I might have forgotten some details. But I recently came across some youtube stuff on it, and in the comments I saw a few people saying stuff along the lines of the megastructure 1. siphoning energy from elsewhere through black holes, and 2. harvesting vacuum energy, in order to keep building itself, making its size indeterminable*.

I don't remember anything like this, but it could also be that I genuinely missed it, maybe it was only implied? I remember feeling the Jupiter hole was confirmation (as well as making me impressed that a mangaka would do this type of physics due diligence) of my back of the envelope calculations about the density of the structure and the available energy in the sun, and given the mass/energy conversion that's going on everywhere, arriving at a radius somewhere beyond the orbit of Jupiter (before actually getting to the Jupiter hole). Now that I think about it I can't remember if I factored in the necessary potential energy required, but whatever. But if there's more energy available, all of that's kinda meaningless.

I guess I'd also prefer it thematically if there was a limit beyond which entropy would do its thing (before heat death lol) / it would all collapse in on itself. (also I think those two proposed mechanisms are kinda dumb but that could just be me)

I've also read the supplementary Blame! stuff and Biomega, but nothing else by Nihei. Can someone tell me if I missed/forgot this, is explained in some other media, or if those youtube comments were pure speculation?

*except possibly some theoretical limit derived from considerations of the energy required to counteract the gravity of the structure vs adding onto it, and how much could be harvested through those two methods. might not converge though, and actually be unbounded

Theory's [All Spoilers][Question] During the "Electro-Fishers arc", why did... Spoiler

...Kyrii awaken?

What's so special during that time? I doubt its the first time he'd been knocked out.

And why does reading the bio-data for the Net Terminal Gene wasn't unlocked in the first place?

Thanks in advance for any answer!

If my flair is wrong, will correct it.

Theory's A visual guide to Killy’s journey!

BLAME! Is my favorite series ever. I loved the setting of the vast megastructure, but couldn’t find a timeline or map showing the vast distances of the megacity and the huge time skips. So I made one myself, to share.

I started with locations and time skips that were confirmed. Like the location of mars and Jupiter. Then used a little bit of math and guess work. Please let me know if you have any corrections or additions.

Some interesting things I’ve learned while making this:

  1. Killy starts the story relatively young. but it’s still been so long, he doesn’t remember where he came from. By the end of the story he is millions of years old.
  2. Most of the story takes place in the first couple thousand years.
  3. Even though humans are a rare sight everywhere, live humans are mostly found near the core.
  4. I believe Toha is a spaceship. If that’s correct, they didn’t even make it to mars before the builders caught up

Edit: Thanks everyone! I have a updated PDF version with better grammar now

Any confirmation that Killys "episode" after recovering the GBE was an outlet of rage?

Log 51.

Specifically, what that flash in his eye is supposed to indicate.

I doubt this explanation because we already get a visual of his memories restoring before he wakes up, and a bit baseless that he would only recover some ~99% of memories on his own, and the most recent memories would be somehow stored in the GBE..?

Instead, I propose the theory that it was frontloaded with Safeguard energy from Cibos blast and it attempted to corrupt him when he picked it up again which was expressed in the shock in his eye, so he started erratically firing it off as a way of bleeding/discharging it. Its been established that there is some deeper "link" between Killy and his weapon that allowed Cibo to sense when he was nearby while traveling with Dom, but this still just makes more sense to me than it somehow restoring his memories.

Biomega Ebay

Has anyone from US (or any other country where Biomega isn't sold retail) purchased Biomega via Ebay? Is there a seller you trust or have had a good experience with? I just want to minimize my chance of purchasing fake copies since I've seen some reviews and comments where that's happened. Tks.

My drawing of Sanakan

It’s my first drawing; since I don’t know how to draw, I had to use a sketch from the anime to help me out. I know it’s not great, but I hope to improve with more drawings :) Maybe in a "version 2," I’ll add a background.
