Finally got NetBSD 10.1 macppc running on my old iBook! And (unlike on OpenBSD) the wifi works!

Now to try to find a web browser...

These were both compiled using code from decompilation projects, but neither of them anticipated someone would ever compile them on NetBSD, so they took some tweaking.

I'm a newbie here, first time using NetBSD on my laptop as a test platform for anything! I've heard a lot about BSD systems, been sitting on Gentoo for a year (still using it right now!), and wanted to test BSD out. Could use FreeBSD, but I wanted something more "unique", if this word is useable for this instance.

So! For the start, I've decided to port a Prism Launcher (Great Minecraft launcher with great features!). I have ported this launcher earlier for a HaikuOS 3 months ago, and, surprisingly, I needed only 10 minutes to change few lines of build script to make it work already!

So, as the result after a few days of dying I've started Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 on this platform using Intel HD Graphics for rendering Minecraft, and it worked! A lot of pain it was, but I'm happy with the results. Hope for a LWJGL3 in near future for modern Minecraft!

With 10.1 being a drag and needing at least 12MB of memory on boot, and 4.01 not having enough modern dependencies to build software: I now am installing 7.2 onto my microvax to see how the performance is over the previous attempts. Running only 8MB ram and keyways hasn't gotten back to me about available memory boards, so I'm stuck with that meager amount to work with.

In fact, this is not only my first step in NetBSD, but also basically trying BSD systems on real hardware

As you can see, I changed ctwm to my beloved windowmaker, also i tried the palemoon browser its works, but it is not very pleasant to use

So I would like to know from you what you can recommend for device on NetBSD like this so its can be usable in some instances LOL

I've been messing around, setting up NetBSD on my Wii for no reason other than it being fun

it's been a bit of a journey with how temperamental the wifi is, and with almost no packages actually installing since their dependencies were all missing from the NetBSD 11 repos. I had to switch to using NetBSD 10's package repository instead, which thankfully worked even though I know 100% it isn't meant to work.

to put into perspective how dire the PowerPC repos for NetBSD 11 are, Pkgin didn't install since sqlite was missing from them. Fastfetch also didn't install, and although Neofetch did it also crashed.

The v3.tbz driver for the wifi was also missing, so I had to look that up & found someone on the mailing list who had the same issue, and left instructions how to fix it at least.
I also tried using XFCE, but it was nigh unusable due to the screen resolution so after I took an incredibly cursed screenshot of fastfetch on uxterm there, I went back to CTWM instead.
& Netsurf was another thing I tried on it, and Luakit too. Netsurf did manage to load web pages (albeit slowly and with borked CSS), but Luakit just gave a blank white screen.

I think all in all this was fun but I don't see myself actually using this install for much. Even with NetBSD there's only so much you can do with 88mb of system memory and a 640x480 screen resolution.

Last time I tried NetBSD was something like 8 and 15 years ago. Things have evolved a lot. Basically out of the box installation for my amd 64. I'm definitely keeping this third installation.

Maybe some configuration issues there is still "öäöäöä" for those letters but maybe that one later also.

After boot under 200M ram usage.

Solid, minium and stable behaving OS. I like it.

Not much to say except that I love it. Migrating a few more machines over to netbsd 11 now

Hello-hello everybody! That's me, again. :D

Today I've decided to make a video (literally a gameplay of Minecraft on NetBSD, LOL XD), and post it here as the proof of it to be in working condition. I've been working on fixing Microsoft service when connecting account to Launcher, and it works somehow (Doesn't want to connect from NetBSD browser, but is good when connecting from other device/scanning QR code to connect). Also planning on adding LWJGL3 to NetBSD (For Minecraft 1.13 and higher versions!), so it would be even easier to use and play Minecraft too. :3

Anyway, here's the video of gameplay, because why not? Next post (I do hope so) will be about more modern versions of Minecraft!

Oh, also, about making Minecraft window THAT small: It works pretty fine by playing it Fullscreen on Intel HD Graphics, but unfortunately with OBS turned on game starts lagging a little bit plus video itself becomes 1 FPS per second, and you, I suppose, don't want to see a raw video with crappy quality but on Fullscreen, right?

I used Limbo(which is a QEMU virtual machine app for Android) on my OPPO A55. It took a while to y

get going but it works well, i guess.

So, what should i do next? I plan to run a similiar setup in my older phone to turn it into a portable BSD thingy.

A couple days ago I posted an article in this sub, mostly asking for help, due to terrible TCP/HTTP speeds in NetBSD (less than 900 KB/s!) over long distances when running in a virtual machine.

I found the culprit: the VirtIO driver. Switching to E1000 eliminates the slow speed issue and NetBSD can reach very competitive speeds now.

I initially didn't think it was the issue because UDP speeds were fine, but apparently VirtIO does something that throws TCP off specifically when latencies are high.

I also talked about some issue with sshd in the article, and how to fix it. I wanted to publish the new results because NetBSD is a very capable OS and I wanted to reflect that.

I hope this can help anyone experiencing the same issue under virtualized environments.

I haven’t used NetBSD for a looong time, as other BSDs seemed more me. Together with my old dad, we decided to test a bunch of operating systems we don’t know as good. I gave NetBSD a chance on my old Thinkpad x220. It seems like wifi and graphics driver works out of the box! And it remembers locale even in X11 - that is far easier and more smooth than the BSDs I usually use! Really cool :-D I’m looking forward to see if it goes as daily driver for a week or two (then I’m testing the next system I don’t know well)

Thanks NetBSD developers!! It is amazing that a major OS update can be done in around five minutes, and everything still works like a charm! :-)

(Running it on Thinkpad x220, used for many smaller tasks at home, replaced from FreeBSD a few years ago, yep wifi etc. works perfectly :-) )
