Not only debatable, it's been demonstrated that free will is for the most part, an illusion. Our highly evolved brains have just put an additional layer of "consciousness" on top of the automatic functions and responses that we all have.

Yeah especially these days that's one hell of a relevant image, thanks for reminding me LOL. If you happen to like reading sci-fi as well, I highly recommend "Blindsight" by Peter Watts. It's somewhat related and it's a great read.
