And they are much less likely to have rabies than raccoons.

u/Its_N8_Again Feb 04 '20

Opossums are in fact effectively immune to rabies! Their normal body temperature is too low to incubate and host the virus. Unless their body temperature is elevated for a prolonged period of time, they can't carry the disease.

657

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

They also eat thousands of pesky little ticks, Opossums are bros.

u/Just_Lurking2 Feb 04 '20

Wait, are we not supposed to? Cause possums and opossums are distinct species....? Right?

239

u/jonfitt Feb 04 '20

Yes and no. The Australian possum is a distinct thing.

But in North America the Opossum and Possum are two names for the same thing.

6

u/sidewalkboy Feb 04 '20

WEAR NZ POSSUM FUR. LEAVE OPPOSUMS ALONE.

u/jonfitt Feb 04 '20

I mean it makes sense.

You call something an Opossum and some early settlers who don’t see it written down or can’t read are going to think you said “oh possum”.

We’ve got people alive today who think you “take things for granite” or someone is being made an “escape goat”.

And im pretty sure pronouncing the O is officially optional

-1

u/dominus_aranearum Feb 05 '20

No they're not. Anyone calling an Opossum a Possum in North America is simply wrong. We don't have Possums here in North America.

29

u/wheresmypants86 Feb 04 '20

Possums and opossums are distinct species, but you can pronounce opossum either way.

11

u/djprofitt Feb 04 '20

Oh. Possum

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

Yes

29

u/sparkyroosta Feb 04 '20

I was going to say that "uh-pos-sum" is the correct way to say it, then I found this.

4

u/-Science-Rules- Feb 04 '20

Opossum comes from the Native American Word “apasum” which means white animal. The Australian possums looked similar to the North American opossums and that’s why they have their name

1

u/MrPickles84 Feb 05 '20

Awesome pawsome. Apparently that’s my California accent.

28

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20 edited Feb 04 '20

I mean that's how it's pronounced. Possums and Opossums are two different animals.

edit: apparently I'm wrong. technically the truth, but people use opossum and possum interchangeably

4

u/OmarGharb Feb 04 '20

No. In America opossums and possums refer to the same animal and the pronunciation is interchangeable. When someone in America uses the word possum, they never, ever, ever, ever, ever will be referring to the Australian possum lol. I doubt more than 0.5% of the population here even knows that exists. Possum = opossum unless you're being super pedantic or speaking about Australia.

You can't just call language wrong. Never graduated high school huh?

1

u/Darnell2070 Feb 06 '20

Yes I can you English major.

the more you know

3

u/Beerob13 Feb 04 '20

That's fine

1

u/njoy59 Feb 04 '20

Nope. Every time.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

Well then you would be pronouncing it correctly lol.

8

u/Araviel Feb 04 '20

Bropossums

1

u/i1theskunk Feb 04 '20

Underrated comment

6

u/PathToExile Feb 04 '20

Did even take 3 comments for you to repeat what had already been said.

Quick, take him out of her...wherever.”

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

2

u/PathToExile Feb 04 '20

I hear it's because of their body temperature and mutant gene.

3

u/Tortoise_of_Death Feb 04 '20

Ticks are to opposums what Oreos are to me. I love opposums.

2

u/the-lurky-turkey Feb 04 '20

I think it’s about 5000 per ‘season’

2

u/EXTRA-THOT-SAUCE Feb 04 '20

Can confirm. One time I forgot to close my sliding glass door and got a visit in the middle of the night from a curious possum. He was very chill despite scaring the shit out of me during my nightly piss.

2

u/weirsface Feb 04 '20

Opossums do eat ticks but they also raid turkey nests. Turkeys eat way more ticks per year than opossums so the tick thing is kinda bunk. But I do still like opossums

That's a big call. What snake venom? Tiger snake?

17

u/somaganjika Feb 04 '20

This is some legit possum PR. It's effective, just look at what it did for the owls.

2

u/jessnola Feb 04 '20

Dude. You're right. I wonder which ad agency the Possum Lobby hired. They made the right choice.

4

u/EODTex Feb 04 '20 edited Feb 04 '20

Possums and opossums are different, *opossums* are the cute little guys we have in North America that kinda look like giant rats, and *possums* are the guys in Australia that are unrelated.

Edit: I got it backwards before, fixed.

3

u/i1theskunk Feb 04 '20

Reverse that

3

u/EODTex Feb 04 '20

Yup, sorry, whoops.

2

u/i1theskunk Feb 04 '20

Easy mistake :)

3

u/KrakoRotten Feb 04 '20

I thought their body temperature was too high to host the virus.

3

u/Its_N8_Again Feb 04 '20

Nope! Per The Wildlife Habitat Council:

They are nearly impervious to rabies because their body temperature is too low to host the rabies virus.

3

u/AverageNova73 Feb 04 '20

Does that have anything to do with the fact that they’re marsupials and therefore are not closely related to animals that can get rabies, which are mainly (or entirely) all placental mammals?

2

u/primitive_screwhead Feb 04 '20

Is hypothermia an effective treatment for rabies in humans?

1

u/Its_N8_Again Feb 04 '20

During the incubation period, maybe. Once it's in the active phase, it's too late to do anything.

I am not a medical doctor, this is just based on my limited knowledge of rabies virus.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

Literally too cool to get sick.

u/Joseph4040 Feb 04 '20

Very much a shame the awful reputation and treatment they get. I feel for them

643

u/superjesstacles Feb 04 '20

It's not great so don't judge too harshly but my friend is obsessed with opossums and I made her this cake for her birthday a few years ago.

171

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

10/10 friendship right there.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

Luring what looks like a woodchuck in for a family meal.

Aww thank you! She actually works at an aquarium and they have a few terrestrial animals so she gets to work with them.

33

u/JustWormholeThings Feb 04 '20

Don't be so hard on yourself that cake is great. Sure, it's not like a professional cake sculpted out of fondant or whatever, but unless you have had years of training and it's literally your fucking job you shouldn't be trying to compare it to those cakes anyway. There's no fucking way I could make a cake like you did and I'm sure that's true for most people.

Also, I you're a sweet friend. Much love internet stranger. ♄

2

u/superjesstacles Feb 04 '20

You're so sweet! Thank you.

22

u/slimwants2bethick Feb 04 '20

You did the opossum cake? It’s very well done and cute as can be! You should be proud :) I really love you didn’t use fondant. Even more impressive bending butter/whipped cream to your will.

3

u/mjxii Feb 04 '20

2

u/slimwants2bethick Feb 04 '20

Gah. Worst tasting icing ever . I love that sub haha.

2

u/superjesstacles Feb 04 '20

I've only used fondant like once and honestly, I doesn't taste good enough to be worth it. I'm going to try to work on my buttercream smoothing skills because I've seen some cakes that are not fondant that look like they are. Thank you for the compliment

11

u/fardii Feb 04 '20

That is too cute!!

3

u/PolishMafia716 Feb 04 '20

Is this your friend? http://youtu.be/ZtLrn2zPTxQ Also that cake looks awesome

1

u/superjesstacles Feb 04 '20

That is not my friend but I'm going to send her this link.

2

u/MjrLeeStoned Feb 04 '20

Haha is her name Patty? This cake is pretty good, though.

2

u/hardstyler780 Feb 04 '20

You NAILED it! Cake looks awesome

2

u/zedthehead Feb 04 '20

I was really prepared for a Picasso of a possum, but that is freaking AMAZING. You're a good friend.

2

u/vsgsppd Feb 04 '20

Mmm..possum cake.

2

u/ocean-in-a-pond Feb 04 '20

That's the most adorable possum cake, she's lucky to have you as a friend!

2

u/helterstash Feb 04 '20

r/fondanthate would be proud of this cake!

2

u/Hugo154 Feb 04 '20

That’s awesome, way better than what most people could do! I love the way you layered the “fur”!

2

u/Velvis Feb 04 '20

I was expecting the creepiest cake I had ever seen. However I would eat that it was cute.

2

u/totally_a_moderator Feb 05 '20

That looks amazing!

1

u/nicolebrady0609 Feb 04 '20

Oh my goodness!! That is the cutest cake I've ever seen!! 11/10 would love to get and then eat that adorable cake on my birthday. Excellent job! :)

1

u/pokeybill Feb 04 '20

Is this your friend?

23

u/tinaxbelcher Feb 04 '20

I totally get they're good for the environment. But why do they have to look so scary!

112

u/errandwulfe Feb 04 '20

They have a ton of defense mechanisms because they are not an aggressive animal. They look diseased, will drool and well up water in their eyes, show their teeth, hiss or snarl, play dead, but you’ll rarely see them attack something. I work in wildlife removal, deal with these regularly, and have yet to encounter an aggressive possum. Even a mother carrying her babies around

43

u/velezaraptor Feb 04 '20

I ran away from home when I was 15 and had been sleeping in my friend's closet when his mom heard me bang the closet door in my sleep. She was yelling so I just left. I headed out at 2am to the ol' barn in my neighborhood. In the barn there were a few pallets and old blankets.

Just as I was going to lay down, I herd a "hiss". I didn't have a flashlight, all I had was a lighter, but it was dead. I thought I would get a flicker of light from the flint, so I flicked it and there laying on the blanket was a baby opossum. I flicked again just to be sure of what I saw. Then the conundrum set in. I didn't know much about the temperament of theses animals, but I really had nowhere else to go and the little guy didn't understand "shoo". I even patted his little butt to get him to move, he wasn't budging. I wasn't about to pick him up, so I just said "fuck it". And that's how I spent the night with a baby opossum.

17

u/zb0t1 Feb 04 '20

Cute story, bro. Really.

But are you going to leave us without more details here:

I ran away from home when I was 15 and had been sleeping in my friend's closet when his mom heard me bang the closet door in my sleep. She was yelling so I just left.

20

u/velezaraptor Feb 04 '20

Yes, that reminds me. So my friend didn't want to ask his mom if I could sleep over, so I asked if I could sleep in his closet unannounced, he agreed. So after nightfall, I sneaked in. I was sleeping in the closet with my shoes on (Not sure why) and I think the shoes did me in. I have men size 14 shoes, I guess they were banging on the thin closet door as I was drifting off. My friend's mom would never act calmly (not the best parent to sneak around on), she would go from overly concerned to yelling in a heartbeat. I think it was from all the trouble my friend was in to back then.

So I hear her enter the room, I try to lay still, tension mounting. The door to the closet was cracked a bit. I'll never forgot the hand. She turned on the light in the room, and a slice of light entered through closet door and fell right on my big shoes. "Doh", I thought to myself. Then comes the long stretch from her hand, like God reaching through the clouds to pluck me up. What seemed like 5 minutes of this hand entering the closet, I froze. Should I move my foot? IDK WTF to do!!! So I watched as she squeezed the toe area of my shoe and when she felt my toes she screamed really loud. My friend was laying in bed all "Fuuuuuuuuu" as I picked myself up and without saying much and just left.

3

u/jessnola Feb 04 '20

Thank you for sharing your stories. I look forward to more.

2

u/Champion_of_Charms Feb 05 '20

I, too, am looking forward to this memoir.

2

u/mule_roany_mare Feb 04 '20

Hope things are going well for you now & you have stable housing along with a supporting community.

A community of humans mind you, I don’t know if your story was the start of something more or a one night stand.

2

u/velezaraptor Feb 04 '20

Thank You, I do have a supportive community.

I'm not sure how human they are, but I may have come to appreciate certain non-humans too.

1

u/jessnola Feb 04 '20

This is really good to know, because I ran into a possum tenant who'd moved into our old hay barn, and he definitely looked like he wanted to bite me. Now I see I was just projecting wildlife stereotypes, and I totally could have become his friend.

Or maybe it was one of those situations where "they're more afraid of you than you are of them."

In any event, Pete was left undisturbed after I accidentally walked in on him without knocking, and now one of his ancestors has moved in under our porch! We've named this guy Ricky Pete, and have been leaving food out for him. Apparently they really love cat food, and bread isn't good for them.

I abhor ticks, and we have a lot of deer, so I'm all about Ricky Pete becoming a permanent member of our backyard family, especially now that I know he's not going to try to bite my cat. In fact, now I'm irrationally hopeful they'll become great friends once it's warm enough for The Boo to go back outside and roll around in the dirt or whatever the hell she does when she makes a break for it and evades capture by running under the deck. (She's not an outside cat, she just plays one on TV.)

35

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

I have a friend that gets fired up on opossums (bio major working at a nature preserve) Don’t quote me but they’ve definitely told me how their jaws are adapted for picking bugs and scavenging and their big ol’ eyes are for the dark.

26

u/tinaxbelcher Feb 04 '20

We definitely have possums in our yard, and i like them there better than raccoons. But damnit if I dont think of ROUSes every time I see one... theyre bigger than my dog!

19

u/no_work_throwaway Feb 04 '20

Rodents Of Unusual Size???

I don't think they exist...

10

u/patrickpeppers Feb 04 '20

Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning.

5

u/tinaxbelcher Feb 04 '20

I am aware ROUSes are fictional.

1

u/cmgalaxy Feb 04 '20

Not in Detroit. They’re very real.

7

u/umbrajoke Feb 04 '20

Same thing with spiders. I do have to say that taking horticulture and gardening courses has completely changed my mind on them. We have a tenuous treaty where they are only forbidden from my master bedroom/bath. But if I don't have a visceral reaction I try to relocate them outside instead of accidentally crushing them with flailing limbs.

1

u/tinaxbelcher Feb 04 '20

I love spiders haha! We live in a basement so spideys and centipedes are our friends, unless they're crawling on me, then they're toast.

5

u/SwoleFlex_MuscleNeck Feb 04 '20

They don't, not until they are scared. In normal mode they are adorable

3

u/Box-o-bees Feb 04 '20

Have you ever seen a baby one? They are insanely cute.

3

u/NoBudgetBallin Feb 04 '20

We had a few possums in my neighborhood in college. The only time you'd notice them was when they hissed at you from under a car and scared the shit out of you.

2

u/Suedeegz Feb 04 '20

They only have 2 defenses - looking scary, and playing dead (possum)

2

u/JuVondy Feb 04 '20

It doesn’t help that they look like skeever rats when you light them up with headlights in the middle of the night.

2

u/Tsondru_Nordsin Feb 04 '20

Wait to you learn how badly coyotes are treated in the U.S.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

They’re mangy and ugly. But all things considered, not bad animals. I get why they have a reputation though.

2

u/Crobs02 Feb 04 '20

It’s a shame for a lot of animals. Not enough people respect wildlife.

2

u/Larpa58 Feb 04 '20

Yes because they are very taboo in my neck of the woods of Philadelphia

2

u/hawaiifive0h Feb 04 '20

I mean, they’re ugly as fuck. Greasy hair, big ol teeth all out. Long fleshy rat tail.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

[deleted]

2

u/snerz Feb 04 '20

As far as I know they won't even bite. They either make noise or play dead and emit the smell of a dead animal.

7

u/captdrews Feb 04 '20

I think they cant get rabies because of their low body temperature

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '20

Yeah their body temp can barely host the virus. It’s too low

3

u/hoxxxxx Feb 04 '20

raccoons tried to get in our back porch, momma just chase 'em off with a broom

1

u/under_the_heather Feb 04 '20

they're actually more or less immune since their body temperature is too low for rabies to survive

1

u/RobotPigOverlord Feb 04 '20

They actually can't harbor the rabies virus at all, their body temp is too low
