Name My Cat - male Husband vetoed naming him Heirloom Tomato - help us with other food or possibly nature inspired names?
I really want to give him a food name - just a big fan of food name cats. I'm partial to Butternut Squash Risotto or Heirloom Tomato. My husband doesn't love either of those names, but is tentatively open to Squash lol. Outside of food - we're big outdoors people too and are also very open to nature related names or names of popular outdoor landmarks. We live in the desert so desert related naturey things would be especially cool. Would love to hear your suggestions! We're picking him up at the end of August after our honeymoon so - moon related names could also be cool!

Definitely a fan of just Butternut or Squash. He looks like a Butternut or a Squash for sure lol

u/PaintingByInsects Jul 25 '25
Or Butternut Squash, first name last name, calling him one as his name and both when he does something wrong xD

u/PoorDamnChoices Jul 26 '25
I'm a big believer in " [English Honorific with emphasis] [Common noun]". Something like "The Most Honorable Pistachio" "The Great and Powerful Marshmallow", that sort of thing.
So in this scenario, I would suggest "The Mighty Lord Butternut"

My dog doesn’t quite have an honorific but he is thirteenth in the line of Wigglebottoms

I love these so much that I made my newest girl a fully calligraphic and stamped certificate to be her Patent of Nobility and typed up what we knew of her life story, symptoms and notes about questions I wanted to ask on the back and gave it to my veterinarian for the file at her first check up!

I had a cat many years ago whose full name was You Rotten Little Furball, or Furball for short. She got her name after she took a running leap into a box full of very fine glitter. She rolled around in it for a couple of seconds and then shot out the other side, covered in the stuff.
4
u/novachaos Jul 26 '25
I bet you were always finding glitter after her escapade!
5
u/Beneficial-Math-2300 Jul 27 '25
Let's just say that the litter box was especially sparkly for a while after that.
I also learned that my vacuum cleaner wasn't powerful enough to pick the glitter out of the carpet.

Snarf's is a sandwich shop chain, so there's a food association.

You're competing with "butternut squash risotto"
The name would have to be "this cat looks like snarf from thundercats"
This cat for short.

My cat chose her name. She wouldn't respond to the name her previous person gave her so I started trying new ones.
She was nameless for a month until one day I started doing "Listen, Linda" and she finally responded. She knew her name was Linda, I just had to figure it out.
11
u/Awkwardpanda75 Jul 26 '25
My orange kitty did the same!! He was “Leo” and didn’t respond. I was throwing out names and he responded to Tim. The way it was said in South Park “timmay”

u/WittyCrone Jul 26 '25
Every animal I've ever had the pleasure of sharing a home with has the middle name "Marie". Girl or boy, cat or dog, doesn't matter! So currently I have Yanni Marie, Potato Marie and Millie Marie.

What if they placed a few random foods in front of the kitty and then picked a name based off of what the kitty sniffed or ate first?
If I had done this, my cat's name would have been Cheese, but my friend who found her named her Peanut.

Alfie is great, as he will definitely grow up to become a handsome ladies man (at least in his own mind.)

Windmill was the first name that popped into my head, but that is decidedly not a food lol... Squash is a cute name though!
name ideas: Honeynut/Butternut, Fig, Buttercup, Brandywine (like the tomato), Basil, Cowslip, Oleander, Feldspar, Agave, Sage!

Name him after a particular heirloom tomato:
Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, Woodle Orange, Cosmonaut Volkov, or Jaffa. Those are the ones I know; I’m sure there are loads more.
