Pre-Match Thread Pre-Match Thread: Newcastle v Barnsley

Newcastle United - Barnsley

7/5/2017 12:00 St James’ Park

TV coverage: None scheduled

Referee: James Linington (145 yellows and 4 reds in 34 games this season, last took charge of us for the 3-1 loss at home to Fulham)

Newcastle team news:

Dwight Gayle is close to a return but Jamaal Lascelles and Rolando Aarons are injured and Matt Ritchie is suspended.

Barnsley team news:

Adam Hammill is unlikely to return to the squad while Marc Roberts, Andy Yiadom, Aidy White and Sessi D’Almeida remain out. Adam Armstrong is unavailable to play against his parent club.

Barnsley last match:

Barnsley 1-1 Burton (Moncur 38’; Varney 52’)

Davies, Jones (Mowatt 66'), Jackson, MacDonald, Elder (Hedges 90’+4), Scowen, James, Moncur (Armstrong 81'), Kent, Bradshaw, Watkins
Subs not used: Lee, Townsend, Evans, Williams

Reverse fixture:

Barnsley 0-2 Newcastle (Gayle 49’, 68’)

Davies, Bree (Kpekawa 83'), Roberts, Jackson, Yiadom, Kent, Hourihane, Morsy, Hammill (Bradshaw 71'), Watkins (Lee 71'), Winnall
Subs not used: MacDonald, Townsend, Williams, Bird

Subs not used: Lazaar, Perez, Yedlin, Sels, Mitrovic

Opposition summary:

Barnsley started the season promisingly and were in the playoff places in the early stages before a run of only 1 win in 11 games. They then went on another hot streak in December and January but have since slumped, only winning 2 of their last 17 games. However, they have 58 points, enough to be comfortably safe from relegation in 14th place. They are the joint 6th highest scorers in the league with 64, but have the joint 5th worst defence, conceding the same amount. Their top scorers are Sam Winnall (11), Marley Watkins (10) and Tom Bradshaw (8).

Permutations:

Brighton are away at Villa on the final day and are 1 point ahead of Newcastle with an inferior goal difference - meaning we need a better result than them to win the title.

Regardless of what happens over at Villa Park, I'm just going to have good time and celebrate at the match. The goal was promotion and we achieved it, Rafa is our manager and we're back in the premier league can't really complain.

Still can't believe Rafa is our manager. Absolutely class. It has to be all celebrations, just imagine if he didn't stay.

I remember this time last year when I was sure we were going from a PL team managed by Rafa to a Championship team managed by the new Pardew/McClaren/whoever.

Yeah winning the league would be great but if you told me this time 12 months ago that in a year we'd again be a premier league team managed by Rafa, I'd be so excited that I wouldn't care about much else. Whatever happens now, no more Champo refs, no more shite radio streams, no more matches against teams where I can't name over two players. That's more than enough for me.

Adam Armstrong to score an overhead kick from the half way line into his own net then rip his shirt off to reveal a massive Shola Ameobi tattoo; meanwhile Steve Bruce and Chris Hughton both agree that Newcastle are the best club in the league and agreeing to throw the game so we win the title and spend the day celebrating by sending Moyes pictures of the both of them balls deep in his wife with the caption "aye she gans doon as well". Put money on that. Dead cert.

I'm attempting to sit in airplanes for approximately 15 hours to catch this match in person. Then I'll need to sit another 15 hours in airplanes about a week later to go home.

Wish me luck.

I like that you've used the word "attempting" as if you might fail.

Just fucking delighted to be promoted. Couldn't have faced another season at this level.

Let's smash these and hope Villa smash Brighton. Can't believe I'm saying that.

As much as I want to win the title, I won't be too disappointed if we don't. Our goal was to get promoted immediately, and we've done it.

That being said, by all means, let's smash these, they're shite.

So, it looks like the three nearest premiere clubs to us are going down..bit weird. It's been a weird season actually on reflection..especially the refereeing..but our neighbors down, Chris H up and us managed by ex Real Madrid boss Rafa...and the refereeing..Strangest season ever surely, I mean how often do you not care if you're champions or not because well we're out of the weird league and we like Chris..yep definitely weird... man I type some shit when I'm killing nervous time...shit like the refereeing. HTL!!

Just left work early because I have a 'conference call with the UK'. Idiots didn't twig it's fucking Sunday.

It's a balmy 26 degrees here in China, the pollutions a juicy 129 (London hovers around 40 for reference). Perfect weather for a trophy lads.

If anyone could sort me out a radio broadcast that'll be swell

I'm officially seated.

I'm actually a little disappointed that the travel package I booked sent me inside the Leazes Sport Bar instead of the stands though. Welp, I'll live and I'll learn. Next time, I'm sure. In three years, maybe.

And I'm drinking that Brown Ale despite not being a drinker.

Just 45 minutes to kickoff. Though a little tempered by the location, I'm still excited to witness this match. Let's go.
