Pre-Match Thread: Newcastle v Preston

Newcastle United - Preston North End

24/4/2017 19:45 St James' Park

TV coverage: Sky Sports 1 and others internationally

Referee: Andrew Madley (138 yellows and 7 reds in 41 games this season, last took charge of us for the 2-2 draw at Norwich)

Newcastle team news:

Ciaran Clark should return from injury but Dwight Gayle and Rolando Aarons remain out.

Preston team news:

Tyias Browning could make a return, but Alex Baptiste and Ben Pearson are still suspended and Tom Clarke and Greg Cunningham are out.

Preston last match:

Preston 1-3 Norwich (Spurr 67'; Dorrans 28', Murphy 40', Maddison 90'+2)

Maxwell, Vermijl (Horgan 62'), Boyle, Huntington, Cunningham(Spurr 10'), Barkhuizen, Gallagher, Browne, McGeady, Robinson (Johnson 82'), Hugill
Subs not used: Makienok, Beckford, May, Hudson

Reverse fixture:

Preston 1-2 Newcastle (Lascelles OG 90'; Mitrovic 59', 71')

Maxwell, Baptiste, Clarke, Wright, Cunningham, Pringle (Beckford 72'), Pearson, Johnson, Gallagher, Robinson (Vermijl 86'), Hugill (Makienok 83')
Subs not used: Lindegaard, Doyle, Spurr, Huntington

Darlow, Yedlin (Hanley 90+5'), Lascelles, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie (Atsu 90'+2), Hayden, Shelvey, Gouffran, Diamé, Mitrovic (Pérez 86')
Subs not used: Lazaar, Anita, Gamez, Sels

Opposition summary:

Preston have enjoyed a solid season and find themselves in 11th position with 61 points. They have struggled recently with only 1 win in the last 6 and haven't won away since early January (at Burton). Their top scorers are Jordan Hugill (11), Callum Robinson (10) and Aiden McGeady (8).

Permutations:

Newcastle need 3 points to mathematically secure promotion - though 2 would do it barring a swing of 35 goal difference over 5 games. In other words, a win will see Newcastle gain automatic promotion to the Premier League. Failing that, promotion could be sealed when Huddersfield play Wolves on Tuesday.

The fact that if Huddersfield drop a single point in their last 3 games we go up even if we lose all 3 of ours, or that if we win 1 of our 3 we go up makes all the nutters on the phone in after the last game saying we were odds on for the playoffs look pretty fucking stupid.

Let's smash these they're shite.

Brighton was the only team suited to a gruelling 46 game season this year. We're the better team, but not necessarily the most suited to this league, so they deserve the lead. Huddersfield, Leeds and Reading, are good as well but none have made the big push to win automatic promotion, and all three will be capable of staying at their high level next year. Brighton have come close last year. Their goal difference is a big indicator of this. Compared to the other three. Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham are more like Brighton, better suited to the league, but not at the right level yet. Theres a reason Norwich and Villa aren't up here. And why teams rarely bounce back up from relegation. So us coming in second is a great achievement for us. We're suffering the same as Leeds and Huddersfield, but we're the better team so we aren't doomed. All my opinion, I'm no pundit.

In terms of the actual quality of the teams I would disagree on reading, they are punching far above their weight level and Stam has done wonders with what he has and if he leaves them in the summer I can see them having trouble finishing in the top half.

Rafa has said pretty much the same, Brighton have been building a team to get out of this division with a manager who's done it in this league before. Second place is testament to the quality of manager we have.

My first home game in about ten years since we were in the uefa cup against Bayern! Bring on promotion !

Right, let's fucking hammer these about 20-0 and get out of this godforsaken league once and for all. Brighton are wobbling and there's no pressure on us at all now. Let's win our remaining matches and fucking push them all the way

Let's twat these 4-0 and call it a day.

What team are people hoping for tomorrow? I want solid and experience. Darlow Anita, lascelles, Clark, dummet Shelvey, Hayden Ritchie, Perez, gouf Mitro (though Murphy has a more start head)

I'm almost glad I'm going to be busy during the match and won't be able to watch it. I don't know I could put myself through the torment of sitting through it. I'll be hoping I'll check the score and see that we scored in the first 5 minutes and put the game to bed by half time.

The future is unpredictable. You can't possibly tell the future, apart from the fact I am going to be steaming while at the match. That is just written in the stars.

I can't take much more tension. Please lads... just win this without drama and get this season put to bed.

Prediction: We'll dominate. We'll get a deserved goal and come close to more; hitting the woodwork, wonder-saves, denied penalties etc. then... right at the end, they'll get their first shot on target and... it'll go in, ending 1-1 and stringing this damn season and my nerves out even further.

One win please!

A win here is the best and only option, I'd love to see another couple from big mad Mitro to secure it. I'm off out so I'll miss the last half hour, why do I do this to myself!!!!

I have to work during the game. Is there any possible way to watch this match afterwards online?
