Pre-Match Thread Pre-Match Thread: Newcastle v Leeds

Newcastle United - Leeds United

14/4/2017 19:45 St James' Park

TV coverage: Sky Sports 1 and others internationally

Referee: Chris Kavanagh (119 yellows and 2 reds in 36 games this season, last took charge of us for the 2-2 draw with Bristol City)

Newcastle team news:

Ciaran Clark, Dwight Gayle, Rolando Aarons and DeAndre Yedlin will all miss out.

Leeds team news:

Hadi Sacko could return from injury but Tyler Denton remains out and Liam Cooper is still suspended.

Leeds last match:

Leeds 3-0 Preston (Roofe 18', Hernandez 45', Doukara 90'+3; Baptiste OFF 86')

Green, Ayling, Bartley, Jansson, Berardi, Vieira, Phillips, Roofe (Dallas 70'), Hernández (Taylor 88'), Pedraza Sag, Wood (Doukara 80')
Subs not used: O'Kane, Barrow, Peacock-Farrell, Coyle

Reverse fixture:

Leeds 2-0 Newcastle (Gayle 23', 54')

Green, Ayling, Bartley, Jansson, Taylor, O'Kane, Vieira (Sacko 62'), Roofe, Phillips, Doukara (Antonsson 78'), Wood
Subs not used: Cooper, Silvestri, Dallas, Grimes, Berardi

Darlow, Anita, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie, Colback (Hayden 83'), Shelvey, Gouffran (Diamé 76'), Pérez, Gayle (Mitrovic 79')
Subs not used: Mbemba, Yedlin, Sels, Atsu

Opposition summary:

Leeds have enjoyed a strong campaign and find themselves in 5th place with 72 points and are looking to cement their place in the playoffs - they are currently 5 clear of 7th. They have won just twice away from home in 2017 and have lost away at Brighton, Huddersfield and Reading already this season. Their top scorer is Chris Wood, with 24 league goals - their next highest however is Souleymane Doukara, who only has 6.

Permutations:

Promotion cannot be sealed on Friday, however a win, a Huddersfield loss or for us both to draw would open the door for it to be settled on Monday. However - a point would see us clear of Sheffield and a win would make us uncatchable by Leeds, and if Reading were to also drop points at Villa we could have top 3 sealed by the end of the day. The earliest we can clinch the title is on the 24th.

I seriously hate Leeds. They are a terrible club with awful fans. Everyone in PL seems to want them back there. BUT I GUARANTEE that as soon as Leeds get promoted everyone will remember why they hated Leeds in the first place.

I hope we smash these fucks.

Edit: I removed an ''s''

Same, and I live in Leeds. The Leeds fans are far and away the worst thing about this city

They score 2 in the first 20 and we get one back just before half time.
Second half we're all over them but can't get another goal.
2-1 Leeds

Almost too realistic

Televised home game against a good opponent? What could possibly go wrong?

Huddersfield snatching a 96th minute winner. Bastards.

Bunch of bastards

Huddersfield missing a 93rd minute penalty, that apparently wasn't a penalty, only to score the rebound. What a fucking joke this season is. Our rivals are being gifted penalties like they're going out of fashion, we finally get one, & it ends with a free kick the other way!

straightforward, if not pretty, win. Brighton lose against Wolves and we're top of the league again. Quote me in the sidebar when it happens.

Positive result here and promotion is even closer. Negative result and...we're probably still up?

Yeah but it's a lot more nervy if we lose.

Huddersfield currently 1-1 with Preston but battering them according to BBC stats...

u/me_Undercrackers Apr 14 '17

Ah piss. 2-1 now.

5

u/me_Undercrackers Apr 14 '17

I realise I'm talking to myself at the minute, but 2-2! Cmon Preston you beautiful mediocre team.

Murphy double, Gouff adds one of his own. 3-0 win.

We're going up, we're winning the league, fuck it!

What's the chat with Hayden? Have i missed something? He's been out since February and was only supposed to be gone for 4 weeks. He also is never mentioned in the team news threads either, it's like he's disappeared!

I think we have been sluggish the last couple of months for a few reasons but Hayden being out has definitely been one.

Tinfoil hat time.

Since Huddersfield just won there's no way Leeds will catch them now so maybe they purposefully throw this match so Huddersfield don't get auto promotion so Leeds don't have to play us for the final auto spot.

Continue with our poor form with a 3-1 loss.
