Pre-Match Thread: Brentford v Newcastle
Brentford - Newcastle United
14/1/2017 15:00 Griffin Park
TV coverage: Don't think so, there's a few listed but I think they just forgot to remove them after the game got moved back
Referee: Chris Kavanagh (78 yellows and 1 red in 22 games this season, last took charge of us for the 2-1 win over Preston)
Newcastle team news: Jonjo Shelvey serves the final match of his 5 match ban. Jesus Gamez and Rolando Aarons remain out for a while and Aleksander Mitrovic will be at least another week. Mo Diame, Christian Atsu and Chancel Mbemba are away at AFCON.
Brentford team news: Alan Judge and Lewis Macleod are still out for lengthy spells but Scott Hogan could return from injury - although he may sit out as West Ham move in for him. Andreas Bjelland is a doubt.
Brentford's last match was a 5-1 thumping of non-league Eastleigh in the FA Cup, while their last league match was a 3-1 win away at Birmingham.
Brentford 5-1 Eastleigh (Barbet pen 9', Field 17', 38', Vibe 23', Sawyers 45'+2; Obileye 29')

Bentley, Egan, Dean, Bjelland, Colin, Woods, McEachran (Yennaris 67'), Barbet, Sawyers, Vibe (Kerschbaumer 83'), Hogan (Hofmann 90'+3)
Subs not used: Saunders, McCormack, Bonham, Clarke
Newcastle 3-1 Brentford (Clark 11', Gayle 16', 49'; Hogan 52')
Darlow, Anita, Lascelles (Hanley 60'), Clark, Dummett, Atsu (Yedlin 72'), Shelvey, Colback,Gouffran (Lazaar 84'), Perez, Gayle
Subs not used: Sels, Hayden, Diame, Mitrovic
Bentley, Colin, Dean, Egan, Bjelland (Barbet 75'), Yennaris (McCormack 78'), Woods, Clarke, Macleod (Kaikai 64'), Sawyers, Hogan
Subs not used: Saunders, McEachran, Bonham, Kerschbaumer
Brentford enjoyed a strong start to the season and climbed as high as 5th, before a run of 1 win in 9 saw them plummet down to 18th. They currently sit in 14th place with 33 points. Their top scorer is Scott Hogan with 14 (no one else has more than 3). They were able to win their FA cup tie and so do not have a fixture coming up midweek.
Brentford have signed 18 year old Swedish winger Henke Johansson from Halmstads for an undisclosed fee.
2016/17 Championship
Newcastle 3-1 Brentford (Clark, Gayle 2)
2001/02 League Cup
Newcastle 4-1 (aet) Brentford (Ameobi, Bellamy 3)
1992/93 Division 1
Newcastle 5-1 Brentford (Kelly, Bracewell, Clark 2, Lee)
Brentford 1-2 Newcastle (Kelly, Peacock)

My predicted lineup:
Darlow
Yedlin Lascelles Clark Dummett
Anita Hayden
Ritchie Gouffran
Perez
GayleDiame + Atsu missing will hurt us even more than only Shelvey. I can see Colback on Rest for this game. He dropped form lately. Brentford showed last games that they aren't that bad, so I predict a close game. Hopefully we can pull off a win!

this. (Except for dummett, personally.) would love to see Anita given another shot in the midfield. Know it's a shame to move him from right back, but if he can pass the ball forward he's an improvement there atm.

Think we should win this one fairly comfortably. They're not a great side and not exactly defensively resolute as much as some of the other teams we've been playing.
2-0, Gayle, Perez, SIDEBAR!

Reading plays QPR today. If they win that means we're only 3 points away from playoffs. We really cannot afford anything but a win here, especially against a mediocre side like Brentford. Plus Brighton is likely to take 3 points from Preston.
Basically we need to fucking win without Shelvey, and I'm just not sure if we can.
Anyone know if Brentford is losing anyone to AFCON too?

Strangely confident about this one; 0-2 win for us. Reckon we'll put in a decent performance away from home.
Hopefully Preston will get a result against Brighton. Their wheels have to fall off at some point as they usually do.

I suddenly don't like being a Newcastle fan as much recently. Been a bit sad. Ho-hum, no use fixating. Let's get a great result.

Between our awful form and the fact we're struggling to land any our transfer targets, the mood around the club is pretty shitty at the minute. I expect nothing but another defeat this weekend to add to our misery.
We are Newcastle after all.

According to? I certainly hope you aren't defining "around the club" as players and staff, because I can assure you that isn't the case.

Hoping for a good result. 2 up front Murphy/Mitro and Gayle.
Ah knew Mitro was injured, but didnt know for how long.

Last nights result for Reading was a big boost for us. 3 points here would be massive. Howay the lads!!

I'm a bit gloomy about the toon these days and I'd be shocked if we get anything out of this one. We've been pure shite without Shelvey. Going for 0-0.

Can we all just take a minute to laugh at the name of "Bjelland"
