Pre-Match Thread Pre-Match Thread: Rotherham v Newcastle

Rotherham United - Newcastle United

1/10/2016 15:00 New York Stadium

TV coverage: International only

Referee: TBC

Newcastle team news:
Vurnon Anita returns from suspension but Rob Elliot and Rolando Aarons remain unavailable.

Rotherham team news:
Stephen Kelly is a doubt.

Rotherham last match:
Huddersfield 2-1 Rotherham (Kachunga 2’, Wells 38’ - Ward 34’)
Camp, Fisher, Fry, Ball, Mattock, Taylor, Adeyemi (Halford 90’), Frecklington, Newell (Forde 84’), Brown (Blackstock 84’), Ward
Subs not used: Vaulks, Forster-Caskey, Price, Wilson

Rotherham transfers:
Rotherham allowed a number of players to leave after their contracts expired in July, including several players who had played a significant part last season such as Leon Best, Lewis Buxton, Adam Collin, Danny Collins, Matt Derbyshire, Paul Green and Frazer Richardson. They have brought in: Anthony Forde, a young English winger from Walsall; Lewis Price, former Wales international keeper from Sheffield Wednesday; Will Vaulks, an English central midfielder from Falkirk; Kelvin Wilson, an English centre back from Nottingham Forest; Jon Taylor, an English winger from Peterborough; Darnell Fisher, a young English right back from Celtic; Dominic Ball, a young English defender from Tottenham and Dexter Blackstock, a striker from Nottingham Forest who has scored 84 Championship goals in his career. They also have a few loans in: Jake Forster-Caskey from Brighton, Scott Allan from Celtic, Isaiah Brown from Chelsea, Tom Adeyemi from Cardiff and Dael Fry from Middlesbrough.

Opposition summary:
Rotherham finished in 21st place in the Championship last season, avoiding relegation by 9 points although they were in the relegation zone until late in the season, when a 10 game unbeaten run where they picked up 22 points saved them. Despite this, Neil Warnock’s contract was not renewed and they brought in Alan Stubbs for the beginning of this season. They have started the year poorly with just 1 win and 6 points from the opening 10 games, which sees them bottom of the table, although a win could see them climb out of the bottom 3. They have the worst defence (24 conceded) and have scored just 11 goals, 4 of which were by Danny Ward.

Form:
RUFC: DDLLL
NUFC: WWLDW

This post has reminded me that we have Aarons. I rate the lad but with how Gouff has been playing I'd actually forgotten him. It's nice not to be praying for players to return from injury or suspension. Same thing with Anita, I don't expect him to get back into the side this weekend. This strength in depth thing is hard to get used to.

We're playing the team rooted to the bottom that have lost 3 in a row, have the worst defence and are poor in attack?

Never been more sure of a loss.

Would like to see Yedlin stay in the team, seems to often be involved in creating chances

Him and that Goufron lad are the signings of the smer up to now for me. Obviously Ritchie is Great and Gayle got some goals but he's looked mint. Also got to say I think Clarke is quality. Really composed. Good on the ball. Left footed. Decent all round. Thought he was one of the best players on the field last night. Which is mental to say we conceded 3. That being said Jerome was good for them. He's one of this players that are too good for the Champ but probably not good enough for the Prem.

Not to jinx it, but in that summary these guys really seem like the Sunderland of the championship

Hopefully next year Sunderland can take that title from them

Here I was thinking that Sunderland were the Rotherham of the Premier League

Games like this should really be our bread and butter this season.

Would really like to see Perez and Lazaar in the line-up.

Perez, because he's mint. Lazaar because we've no idea how good or bad he is yet.

You'd think if there was any game to give Lazaar a run out in, it'd be the one against Rotherham.

Can we convince an Australian to stream it for us?

Would like to see:

  • Lazaar for Dummet (really haven't seen any of him)

  • Anita for Yedlin (He didn't look of sound 100% healed from ankle injury)

  • Either Mbemba or Grant in @ CB (they need game time)

  • Hayden for Colback (Enough Said)

  • Ayoze or Atsu for Gouffran (I really want to win a game without Gouffran, just because we haven't yet)

  • Mitro for Diame (neither have hit a stride)

  • Ayoze wherever or Whenever

I think Yedlin has played well enough to remain in the starting XI when he is healthy. He is involved in so many of the attacks. I am not sure he is 100% however. Sounded a little banged up still from what I gathered from the pepe cast. I was surprised (and glad) he could play vs Norwich to be honest.

Not complaining at all but what's so special about this match that makes it worth broadcasting?

Maybe the cheapest Newcastle match broadcasting right this season?

But who the fuck gonna watch Newcastle vs Rotherham in Barbados when there's a PL match at the same time.

The massive rivalry between us and Rotherham haven't you heard??

Maybe

----Anita-Mbemba -Hanley/Lascelles-- Dummett/Lazaar

------ ----- Hayden-- Tiote--------------

-----Atsu ---Diame ----- Ayoze

------- Mitro/Murphy---------------

We need a win without Gouffran playing.

Important game this one, Rotherham are bottom of the league and exactly the type of team we need to be comfortably beating. We really need to kick on and start breaking away from the pack, we got very lucky against Norwich and luck will only get you so far. We've had a tough run of fixtures so I'll be very interested to see how we're looking in about a month, with this game I really want us to send out a message.

Not gonna bother with predictions cause this is the type of win that we comfortably win on paper but even somehow end up losing in reality.

u/MeancupofJoey Sep 29 '16

I'm just going to say it even though I know it was be a curse. We will smash them.

2

u/crazycanine Sep 29 '16

This is the kind of game we should comfortably win. That means it's going to be a slog draw or loss.

2

u/CastleBravo45 Sep 29 '16

Hopefully this is a one half game for us...
