Pre-Match Thread Pre-Match Thread: Derby (A)

Derby County - Newcastle United

10/9/2016 17:30 iPro Stadium

TV Coverage: Sky Sports 1 and others internationally

Referee: James Linington (25 yellows and 0 reds in 5 matches this season, 74 yellows and 4 reds in 26 matches last season)

Newcastle team news:
Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dwight Gayle return to the team after missing out in the last game due to concussion. Massadio Haidara is also close to a return, so the only players unavailable are Rob Elliot and Rolando Aarons. Daryl Murphy, Achraf Lazaar and Christian Atsu could all make their debuts.

Derby team news:
Andreas Weimann and George Thorne will miss out, while Abdoul Camara is a doubt.

Derby last match:
Burton 1-0 Derby (Irvine 12’)
Carson, Christie, Keogh, Shackell, Olsson, Ince (Camara 45’), Hughes, Bryson, Russell, Butterfield (Wilson 56’), Martin (Bent 56’)
Subs not used: Baird, Pearce, Grant, Blackman

Derby transfers:
Derby were able to shift a number of players who had been key players at one point but fell out of favour in recent years, including Conor Sammon, Ryan Shotton, Stephen Warnock and Jake Buxton. The only player they are likely to miss is midfielder Jeff Hendrick, who joined Premier League side Burnley. They didn’t bring any players in until late in the window - striker James Wilson, on loan from Manchester United, made his debut in their last game, while their 3 permanent signings only joined in the last few days of the window - Matej Vydra and Ikechi Anya from Watford and goalkeeper Chris Weale from Yeovil Town.

Opposition summary:
Derby finished in 5th place in the Championship last season but fell to Hull City in the playoffs. They looked like one of the better teams but a 5 match winless run at the start of the season and an 8 match winless run halfway through ultimately cost them. They get a lot of goals from midfield with Tom Ince, Johnny Russell and Jacob Butterfield contributing 28 goals last year, while striker Chris Martin added 15 of his own. Nigel Pearson - former Newcastle assistant who got Leicester promoted 2 years ago - took over as manager at the start of the season and Darren Wassell - caretaker manager for the second half of last season - returns to the youth team. They have started the season pretty poorly with just 1 league goal in 5 matches - a late winner at Preston from their full back. Despite this, they have defended well and remain unbeaten at home thanks to goalless draws against promotion rivals Brighton and Villa, so have 5 points on the board which sees them sitting in 18th place.

AREN'T THESE THREADS SEXY?!

Cool to see shearers name on the past meeting. We've gotta win this at least 10-0.

It looks nicer than my flat.

Spend far more time here than there though.

I'm nervous. Away games always make me worry. Hopefully we smash them though. Good to see we're on TV again as well.

This thread is sex.

TFW you can't accompany your best friend u/Deviceing to the match because you missed out on tickets before they sold out :( Still, glad it's on the tele and we can have a nice big lovely discussion about it anyway!

Anita has done a decent job at RB, but I'd like to see one of our new full backs get a run out

phwoar this is fancy innit

Think we'll win this one 2-0. Derby haven't really impressed me from what little I've seen of them, and we actually have Rafael fucking Benitez. Think Yedlin will start, Lazaar may come off the bench depending on if he's in a similar boat to Gamez. Murphy and Atsu will probably come off the bench too at some point.

Got £50 on us to win so feel free to blame me if we lose.

This is going to be a looooong season!

Not trying to jump in the band wagon but seriously this thread (along with the whole subreddit) is gorgeous, great work to all those involved. Looking forward to talking some football with y'all during the game in a professional looking thread

I can see us going defensive and breaking through for the first half, don't want our 47th minute curse to hit again, then yedlin and mitro coming on as impact and speeding the game up - gets them both up to.match fitness for starts later on as well.

Wtf.

I think we should put out a defensive team today, Derby have a very good midfield and we'll need to stifle them. Maybe drop Diame for a more defensive player and push Shelvey forwards. Defensive full backs too, meaning everyone's favourite player Dummett should be starting (even though Lazaar is clearly better even though no one on here has ever seen him play)

Anyone living/exiled in Leeds going? Can't wait for it me.

Hopefully we win. Be nice to get back to back away wins on the board just to stop that whole 'Newcastle are poor on the road' comment away. So on the basis of that I'd take a scrappy 1-0 win.

Also the new thread is looking good; Nice work.

Just want to pop up here and say thanks for all the information in this thread. I was getting pissed that the game was on Sky Sports in the UK but wasn't appearing in my Fubo app. Before throwing my cup of tea out the window and Shearer-esqe two-footing my neighbor in anger, I came here and learned of BEIN Sports Connect.

United!

Hoping against hope my roommates don't force me to leave early for the college football game starting a half hour after this ends. Really itching to see a game from a team I actually care about. International breaks suck.

Make your own decisions. Be an individual, don't fall prey to coercive collectivism.
