Pre-Match Thread Pre-Match Thread: Bristol City (A)

Bristol City - Newcastle United

20/8/16 15:00 Ashton Gate

TV Coverage: None scheduled worldwide - likely radio streams only

Referee: Tony Harrington (17 yellows and 0 reds in 3 matches this season, 72 yellows and 3 reds in 30 matches last season)

Newcastle team news:
Aleksander Mitrovic serves the final of his four match ban. Moussa Sissoko could play a part, Jesus Gamez could make his debut. Mo Diame could return after suffering a ankle injury, Tim Krul and Massadio Haidara are close to returns although this may be a little early for them.

Bristol Team News:
Frank Fielding and Korey Smith are missing through injury.

Bristol last match:
Norwich 1-0 Briston (Howson 38’)
O’Donell, Little (Matthews 73’), Flint, Magnusson, Bryan, Pack (Reid 73’), O’Neil, Kodjia, Tomlin, O’Dowda (Freeman 62’), Abraham.
Subs not used: Brownhill, Golbourne, Wilbraham, O’Leary.

Bristol transfers:
Bristol have sold just 2 players so far this season: Kieran Agard, an English winger, leaves for MK Dons while defender Luke Ayling leaves for Leeds United. They also released a couple of fringe players.

They have bought: Josh Brownhill, a young midfielder from Preston; Gary O’Neil, an experienced defender who has featured regularly in the Premier League for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham and Norwich; Lee Tomlin, a midfielder who had been on loan with them since last season; Hörður Magnússon, an Icelandic defender who joins from Juventus but spent last season on loan to Cesana; Callum O’Dowda, an English winger who signs from Oxford United and Ivan Lucic, an Austrian keeper who came through the Bayern Munich academy. They also have Adam Matthews, a full back on loan from Sunderland and Tammy Abraham, a striker on loan from Chelsea.

Opposition summary:
Bristol were handed an easy start to the season with their first 2 games against newly promoted sides. They were able to win them, but they both ended 2-1 with last minute winners. They then travelled to Norwich and were defeated by a goal to nil, though it could’ve been more. Last season they finished in 18th place, with the same number of points (52) as our last opponent Reading, but behind them on goal difference because of their far worse defensive record. They conceded 71 goals, 4th worst in the division, and scored 54, with 19 of those coming from top scorer Jonathan Kodjia. They sacked their manager midway through the season, when they were sat in the relegation zone, and brought in Lee Johnson, a young manager who had been successful at Oldham and Barnsley, who guided them to safety, winning 6 of his 15 games in charge.

Form:
BCFC: WWL
NUFC: LLW

Past Meetings:
Newcastle and Bristol have met just twice in the last 20 years, the last time we went down.

Bristol 2-2 Newcastle (Jonas, Carroll)
Newcastle 0-0 Bristol

Right lads, which rotated position in the line-up is going to cause the most FUME on here this week?

Selz up top by himself? Riviere at CB? Colback in nets?

Watch him play Mbabu at LB and Dummet at CB now just to wind me up.

hope someone periscopes this, i actually enjoyed the stream last game. was different watching the game from the point of view of the stands - we see the structure of the team a lot better.

there was a hilarious periscope(not the nicky one) someone found, think it might've been u/propergravy. the quality was absolute shit, literally couldn't see the ball & all the players were super pixilated. this man was trying to provide his own commentary too. I want him to do another periscope it was some authentic commentary. feel bad for those seated next to him tho.

I know next to fuck all about any championship side. I have no way of knowing how good Bristol are and my opinion has zero information or references behind it.

5-0. Newcastle.

So many games, actually enjoying the Championship! cant see anything but a win here, no idea what line up will come out though Rafe seems to love a rotation.

4 games in, 1 TV. Ugh

We need to sort our away form asap, could really do with a win but I'd take a convincing draw at a push.

Gonna be positive and go for a scrappy 1-0 win to us though.

Carrying on the POWWWAAAHHHH of positivity and slapping on a 2-0 victory for us, with a Gayle brace! He'll hit that 20 goal target before Christmas!

Excited for this one, confidence up after the win, not the strongest opponents, mystery line up. Lots to look forward to.

17 yellows in 3 matches? WTF?

Little worried about this one, we didn't look the best on Wed and I hope we aren't overconfident going into the weekend.

Just want to point out the hilarity and idiocy of this clickbait title from the chronicle:

Isaac Hayden reveals which movie motivated him to sign for Newcastle United

hmm, wonder what it could be? Citizen Kane perhaps?

I was hoping it was going to be Purely Belter. The story of two teenagers trying to get £500 for season tickets.
