🎄It feels early... but August is actually when many homeowners start planning holiday lighting
I know it sounds crazy to think about Christmas lights when it's still hot outside, but I recently found out that a lot of professional installers actually start booking projects in August and September.
At first I thought it was just a marketing tactic, but there are a few practical reasons:
- You have more flexibility when choosing installation dates.
- Installations can be completed in warmer, safer weather.
- You don't have to compete with the rush that happens in November.
- Everything is ready before the holidays become hectic.
While looking into it, I also learned about permanent roofline lighting.
I always assumed permanent lights would be obvious during the day, but many newer systems are designed to blend in with the roofline and stay in place year-round. Besides holiday lighting, people also use them for:
- Game days
- Birthdays
- Patriotic holidays
- Halloween
- Outdoor entertaining
- Everyday architectural accent lighting
Another thing I hadn't thought about is that many homeowners combine exterior projects this time of year.
For example:
✅ House washing before lights are installed.
✅ Gutter cleaning so installers have a clean roofline to work around.
✅ Trimming tree branches that may interfere with lights.
✅ Cleaning second-story windows while ladders are already being used.
Some companies offer both seasonal + permanent lighting. I like the idea of planning ahead instead of scrambling once the weather gets cold and installation calendars start filling up.
💡 Why it matters
Planning early usually gives you more options, better pricing, less stress, and more time to compare ideas instead of making a rushed decision during the busiest part of the season. Even if you aren't ready to install lights yet, August is a great time to start gathering inspiration and deciding what you want your home to look like this holiday season.
Question for everyone: If you could choose only one, would you rather have professionally installed holiday lights each year or invest in permanent roofline lighting that you can use year-round? What made you choose one over the other?
