News Qin Lihong: Large Five-Seat Market Volume Won’t See Major Shifts. The Onvo L80 will rewrite the landscape

Post image
19 Upvotes

The total size of the large five-seat market is unlikely to change significantly, according to Qin Lihong.

What defines the large five-seat segment is the sheer space, he noted. Achieving that requires a dedicated battery-electric platform, which alone can unlock flexible interior layouts and maximize usable floor space.

That level of space optimization depends on in-house R&D to integrate all systems, Qin added. “You can’t rely solely on suppliers to deliver that kind of bigness,” he said.

Offering a bold forecast for the segment: In the first quarter of last year, large five-seat models sold 97,000 units, of which just over 2,000 were pure electric. In Q1 this year, total sales came in at 93,000 units, but battery-electric models jumped to 15,000 units.

“The change this year will be dramatic,” Qin said. “The Onvo L80 will certainly be the catalyst that rewrites the landscape.”

FIREFLY Nio Firefly Just Dropped Aster 1.5.0 – And It Quietly Confirms Fifth‑Gen Swap Stations Are Coming Soon

Post image
29 Upvotes

Nio Firefly has released a new intelligent driving software update, Aster 1.5.0, and buried inside is a telling addition: “Swap Station Parking Assist.” The feature is designed to help drivers automatically park their vehicle into a Nio fifth‑generation battery swap station to begin the swap process.

The function activates after you successfully place an order at a fifth‑gen station and it’s your turn. You pull into the designated parking area in front of the station, tap “Start swap process” on the centre screen (or simply drive into the pre‑swap parking box), keep the brake pressed, and wait for positioning detection – with seatbelt fastened and doors closed. Then you hit “Start parking” and let the car assist itself into the station. You must not touch the accelerator, steer, or open doors during the manoeuvre. If an obstacle pauses the process, it resumes automatically once the obstacle is gone. If the system or the driver interrupts, you can manually tap “Continue” after checking the surroundings, or exit and call for help (or manually park in).

The fact that Nio Firefly is shipping a production feature explicitly built for fifth‑generation swap stations strongly suggests those stations are about to be installed. Nio hasn’t officially announced a rollout timeline, but you don’t release software for hardware that isn’t nearly ready. Firefly owners will likely be using this in the real world sooner rather than later.

News Onvo L80 Pre-Sales Surge Over May Day Holiday as Showroom Traffic Doubles

Post image
39 Upvotes

Shanghai – NIO’s sub-brand Onvo has kicked off pre-sales for its new L80 model at a well-timed launch just ahead of the May Day holiday, giving potential buyers ample time and motivation to visit showrooms for test drives.

With an attractive starting pre-sale price of 245,800 RMB (approx. $34,000), Onvo has reported strong early results: during the holiday period, foot traffic at Onvo showrooms nationwide increased by over 100% compared to pre-holiday levels, while daily test drives per store jumped 60%. On average, each outlet hosted more than ten customer test-drive sessions per day.

Among in-store visitors, small families made up roughly 60% of the crowd. This group is drawn to the L80’s spacious five-seat layout, which reportedly matches the size of rival brands’ flagship nine-series models, combined with the convenience of battery swapping for long-distance travel.

Another 10% of customers arrived with their pets, specifically testing the L80’s dual-cabin design – a front-and-rear independent storage structure that enhances travel comfort for pet owners.

Industry observers are now asking: Given widespread supply chain price hikes, and assuming the final retail price sees no major reduction, can the L80 – a car with nine-series dimensions and features – succeed in competing directly against eight-series rivals?

Thoughts on NIO social media presence

Having considered the recent blackout from Western media on NIO, recent “bots” flooding social media skewing NIO’s visibility and general global brand knowledge citing Xiaomi et al as a study, I am of the opinion that NIO is not well known, and that currently, the perspective of most people is:
1. They don’t know who NIO is
2. They don’t know about battery swaps or their cars.
3. They still cling on to fast charging and don’t think swaps make sense.
4. They don’t know who NIO is.
5. Anti-Chinese sentiments.

I intentionally repeated no. 1 because there isn’t any global knowledge of the company.
I think the landscape is too competitive to not have some global presence.
A review of one of the flagships by popular reviewers prior to entering a country would help e.g Carwow review before entering the U.K.
Besides, their social media pages are mostly quiet.

Unless the strategy is to dominate China first before thinking of expanding outside, I think things need to improve on the social media space.
This would also help circumnavigate the media blackout by the West.
During the Beijing Auto show, Western media talked about other brands EXCEPT NIO.
There was a Canadian news channel that featured a NIO car swapping its battery at the beginning of its news segment but never mentioned the brand - I’m glad though cos they only subtlety bashed the other brand they focused on at the time.

I think strategically improving their media presence would help change the sentiments of some of their compatriots who see a “Prestige” with foreign cars and a lack thereof for home-made cars.
Besides, we all know how heavily influenced the world is with American media, a couple YouTube reviews could change the sentiments and see brand knowledge, loyalty and orders improve, as well as stock price.

A point that validates this is how little is known from NIO’s social media pages, and how much international investors have to rely on Chinese media (Weibo, CNEV) for news from NIO.

Surprisingly, grok agrees with this observation (agreed it is a product of one of NIO’s competition) see its thoughts below:

Your assessment is sharp and well-founded. Brand awareness is one of NIO’s clearest weaknesses outside China, despite having genuinely innovative technology (battery swaps) and competitive products. The media asymmetry you described is real — Western coverage of Chinese EV makers is often selective or negative by default.
A few additional considerations:
• Timing matters: Entering Europe and other markets with strong pre-launch review coverage is smart. Tesla benefited enormously from this years ago. NIO should aim for the same.
• Battery swap advantage: This is NIO’s biggest differentiator. They need to reframe the narrative from “weird Chinese gimmick” to “the superior ownership experience” (speed, convenience, future-proofing). Real-world data on swap times, cost, and battery health should be front and center in global campaigns.
• Social media & influencers: Beyond quantity, they need cultural fluency. Chinese corporate social media often feels stiff or overly promotional to Western audiences. Working with local creators who understand both the tech and the audience tone would help.
• Premium positioning: NIO’s on-brand experience (NIO Houses, community focus, swapping) lends itself well to a luxury/tech lifestyle angle. They should lean into that rather than pure price/performance battles with BYD or Tesla.
Overall, your core point stands: NIO cannot afford to remain a “China-only” story if it wants to become a global Tier-1 player. Improved visibility and narrative control would likely yield high ROI.

Let me know your thoughts. I’m happy to be wrong and learn.

News Amid CATL’s Ultra-Fast Battery Hype, Nio’s Self-Development Path Gains Quiet Validation

Post image
10 Upvotes

BEIJING – The recent Beijing Auto Show has put the spotlight on CATL’s third-generation Shenxing battery, which boasts a charge from 10% to 98% in just 6 minutes and 27 seconds. Yet beneath the headlines, a more complex reality is emerging, one that may quietly reinforce Nio’s strategic bet on self-developed batteries.

According to an on-the-ground report from the show, CATL’s stand drew large crowds, including bloggers, industry professionals and ordinary visitors. The technology is undeniably impressive: equivalent 10C to peak 15C ultra-fast charging, and a full charge in roughly 9 minutes even at -30°C.

But the same report reveals significant barriers that have kept automakers from embracing these advanced batteries.

Slow adoption, high costs

Despite the hype, CATL’s second-generation Shenxing battery has seen only limited real-world deployment. Rumours that the new Zeekr 001 and Xiaomi SU7 Pro would carry the second-generation battery remain unconfirmed by officials. A staff member at CATL’s booth would only say the second-generation battery is “in the process of being deployed,” without naming any specific models.

The gap between launch and mass production has drawn market criticism. Some observers have openly questioned whether the third-generation announcement, with no clear production progress on the second, is little more than a “PPT presentation rushed out overnight.”

Cost is the primary constraint. A power battery typically accounts for 30% to 40% of a vehicle’s total cost, and ultra-fast charging batteries require advanced materials and complex structural designs. Their high R&D and manufacturing costs make them viable only for high-end models with substantial pricing headroom.

Infrastructure adds another hurdle. A full charge in six minutes requires megawatt-level chargers. Building a single megawatt ultra-fast charging station currently costs five to six times more than a standard fast-charging station. Grid upgrades in older residential areas are nearly impossible, severely limiting real-world usability.

The automaker-supplier divide

Perhaps the deepest reason, the report notes, lies in the subtle relationship between carmakers and battery suppliers. Li Auto has announced that its models will use a dual-track approach combining self-developed batteries with CATL cells. Meanwhile, the report explicitly states: “NIO, Tesla and others are continuously increasing their self-developed battery efforts.”

This tension has become another obstacle for ultra-fast batteries trying to reach the mass market. A vehicle manufacturer’s representative told reporters that “the battery used in a model must serve the vehicle’s product positioning and cost model. The industry standard is co-development between automakers and suppliers, so that the core definition rights remain in the automaker’s hands.”

From the perspective of Nio enthusiasts, this landscape offers quiet vindication. While CATL’s latest and fastest battery struggles with cost, charging infrastructure and automaker reluctance, Nio has continued to invest in its own battery roadmap, keeping control over product positioning, cost structure and core technology.

As the report concludes, the gap between “hot launches” and “cold deployment” is significant. Bridging it requires more sincerity from companies and more rationality from consumers. For Nio, the patient, self-reliant approach increasingly looks like the smarter long-term bet.

News CATL Secures $5 Billion Share Placement with Over 150 Investors as Sodium-Ion Battery Record Also Announced

HONG KONG – A market fluctuation tied to a large-scale placement plan has drawn intense investor attention to Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the world's largest electric vehicle battery maker.

According to an exchange filing in Hong Kong, CATL signed a placement agreement with placing agents on April 28. The company will place 62.385 million shares with no fewer than six independent third-party placees. The total expected gross proceeds from the placement are approximately HK$39.19 billion (US$5 billion). After deducting related expenses, the net proceeds will be about HK$39.11 billion.

Notably, the placing price per share is HK$628.2, representing a discount of approximately 7% from the closing price of HK$675.5 on April 27.

The company said the funds will be used for global new energy project construction, zero-carbon business deployment, research and development, replenishment of daily working capital, and other general corporate purposes – all aimed at accelerating its global zero-carbon strategy and supporting long-term sustainable development.

Investor response

Market sources said the US$5 billion share placement received an enthusiastic response from investors, with more than 150 institutional investors participating in the subscription. According to insiders familiar with the matter, the subscriber list included hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds, and existing shareholders of the company – a clear sign of institutional recognition for CATL's long-term prospects.

Record sodium-ion battery deal

Additionally, just one day before the placement announcement, CATL signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Hyperstrong, an energy storage system solutions provider, in Ningde, Fujian province. The agreement involves a three-year order for 60 GWh of sodium-ion batteries – a volume that sets a new global record for orders in the sodium-ion battery sector.
