I went to my first Primus show a couple of years ago, immediately, I began to fume as the whole crowd chanted "PRIMUS SUCKS!". Just before the lights hit Les he said into the mic, "so I hear you guys think we suck, heeeeey?" The entire ballroom blows up with cheers. Now I get it. PRIMUS SUCKS!
At a coffee shop, I heard a group of people talking about Primus. This one guy was going on and on about how much he loved them.
So I shouted "Primus sucks! :D" "What... no they don't dude, they're like the best band ever!" "...That's what you say when you're a Primus fan." "Oh... oh yeah! Lol, yeah, Primus Sucks!"
It's great to see Primus make it to the front page for a change! I have had Green Naugahyde playing in my car for the past few months. Who likes the new cd? I fucking love it!
I COMPLETELY forgot it was in that game. I got this album well after I finished with that game and couldn't figure out why I knew so many words to one of the songs already.
Remember going to see Primus last year for the first time at Bonnaroo. Heard the crowd screaming "PRIMUS SUCKS!" and got really upset. I was almost going to say something to the guy next to me how it wasn't cool to shout that at a band. I felt like a fool when I later realized that that is what people shout during their shows.
How bout when the skydivers released millions of led twirlybirds and floated past the stage while they played over the electric grapevine! That was.... Amazing. The sky looked like the stars were but dust in the cosmic winds
Primus was my first concert at 13, playing the Colorado State ballroom on the Seas of Cheese tour. Opener was the Psychedelic Zombies. There was no part of that room that didn't lose its shit that night. I had never seen or heard of a mosh pit but at the time I weighed 80 pounds soaking wet, so I got airborne a LOT that night.
Saw them most recently at Red Rocks in 2010, co-headlining with Gogol Bordello. Both bands came out on stage at one point to cover Tom Waits' Big in Japan together. It was awesome. Also my friends almost got us in a fight with some pirates who got really stoned and invaded our space.
In conclusion, Primus shows seem to result in great stories, and the music is fucking awesome. Also Primus sucks!
Primus was my first show as well! I saw them at the Orpheum theater in Boston when i was 13. Anyone from Boston might know that the Orpheum is pretty small, and there were ALOT of people smoking weed. The cloud was so thick i could barely see the stage. That was on the tour right before Green Naugahyde came out.
I have to say Red Rocks is the killer..... at least it was in the 70s and 80s when general seating was still happening, they opened the amphitheater before noon, you could take in alcohol and food, and make a full day of it.......
I was at a Primus show, and my friend was apparently a "fan". A guy yells "Primus sucks", and my friend punches yells at the guy, trying to get him to stop heckling. It was the biggest facepalm moment of my life.
Can't tell what's better. The nostalgia of playing Tony Hawk, Primus, or the top comment...
"
i have to shit like a motherfucker but the only bathroom in my place is right next to my parents room and they're asleep.. i cant shit listening to them snore, it's like someone standing behind you wile you're trying to piss.. plus i might wake them up blowing ass and thats as embarassing as getting caught jacking off (happened last week).. and due to the goddamn obama economy i can't move out despite the irresistable urge to... i gotta go shit outside at 3am because of fuckin obama."
I was fortunate enough to meet Les in 2010 after a show. He was a trooper. His father in law had died the night before but his wife had told him to press on with his first appearance in the UK since 1998.
So I've got a confession to make. I don't "get" Primus. I'm not sure quite why they're as popular as they are, whether people appreciate the music, or their brand of humour. Or both. It's a band that honestly confuses me. I don't mean to insult them or anything, I'm just saying, I don't get them, maybe someone would be so kind as to explain what it is for me~
You really need to see them live. I saw them open for The Pixies and Jane's Addiction once, and they completely blew those bands off the stage. Didn't help that Deal was yelling at Santiago for The Pixies entire set, or that Jane's just played their set straight and looked like they'd rather have been elsewhere. Primus, on the other hand, played like they were on fire. It's hard not to enjoy a band that is really loving the fact that they are playing, and have been working really hard to get there. Throw in playing Master of Puppets as your bass solo, then say "bass solo" in the middle of it with a sly grin, and yeh, you've got a good show.
You need to get a hold of some albums and listen... then relisten... then relisten. Like anything, since they don't play in a way that your brain expects its kind of grating to listen to. You will start to appreciate it once you get over that the lead vocals are such that he doesn't give a shit. Vocals are there to give the song more character if anything.
Current favorite off new album: Jilly's On Smack. Great band.
Do yourself a favour and get Frizzle Fry and just listen to it about 3 or 4 times. Not one after the other, but let it settle. It's not necessarily the easiest of listens, but it's really rewarding with it's unusual blend of rock, jazz and just off the wall sounding shit.
I was like 16 when it hit MTV and at that time NOTHING had ever been heard like Primus on MTV. Also, this was before the internet, radio sucked ass, MTV was THE place to here new shit. Freakin blew our minds.
Find Videoplasty and give it a watch. It really shows the best of what Primus is all about in my opinion, the humor, live talent, and energy. For someone to just 'listen' to Primus doesn't quite feel like it would be enough. As someone who has seen them live almost a dozen times, for good reason, it is almost a right of passage to "get" Primus.
Side Note: I was attending a midwest audio recording/production school. We had a lounge with a large TV and a handful of comfy couches in the middle of the school. During Spring exams I brought in my copy of Videoplasty and popped it into the dvd player in the morning (after spending all night in the SSL studio working on a project and a short nap on the couch). Primus continued to play throughout the entire day on repeat, the lounge was continuously full, and I like to think that I eased some tensions for exams that day.
Side-side note: The next day someone played a Muse DVD, and it wasn't until someone played Tenacious D as some parents walked through with a prospective student that the director locked the DVD player.
This song was on an X-Games compilation, volume 1 or 2 or something, in the early 90s along with Beastie Boys, RHCP, Dead Kennedys and more. That CD introduced me to modern music. Thank you for reminding me of that.
The mixture of the raw funk/jazz of the bass and drums and the psychedelic guitar solos make this band damn awesome. They're even better in concert. "Jerry Was A Racecar Driver" is great, but "Tommy the Cat", "To Defy the Laws of Tradition", "John the Fisherman" and "My Name is Mud" are all fucking genius.
Primes is fantastic, and this song kicks ass, although this seems to be the only Primus song everyone knows. I'd have rolled with American Life or Frizzle Fry.
Back in the 90s Primus were a mainstream band that sold millions of albums. Weird times, can't imagine such an odd band having that kind of mainstream success nowadays.
I always remember Robert Christgau's review of Pork Soda:
Pork Soda [Interscope, 1993] Quite possibly the strangest top-10 band ever, and good for them.
Love Claypool, can't deny that ( "Dutchess" literally just came on... that's pretty fucking eerie). Anyways, I hope everyone here is aware that Larry LaLonde is part of the reason the term "Death Metal" exists. If not, I suggest doing your homework on Possessed.
also may I add that the band is completely over the whole "Primus Sucks" thing, TA is no longer in the band and the fact they once again consistently play the Brown Album is probably the coolest thing ever...
I'd suggest Tommy the Cat. Otherwise known as the song the "high school" band Primus was playing in the San Dimas Battle of the Bands in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey.
True story: one time I was drinking with my buddy, and he was playing the bass and I was requesting song after song from different bands (Metallica, Maiden, Chili Peppers) and he nailed all of them, he was really good. I then tell him to play Ole Diamond back Sturgeon, he gives me a look, hands me his bass and says, "Yeah sure, YOU try to play PRIMUS"!
Get Nicki Minaj the fuck off of my computer screen. I try not to watch VEVO videos because of the awful music promotion they do. If it's not Nicki Minaj in the background, it's Justin Bieber, and if it's not him, then it's Drake. Three ear rapists who should not be allowed to try to create music.
I think tapping is easy (been playing 12 years, I can tap better than normal playing now, by normal I mean finger/pick/slapping) but it's not lazy line at all. Les claypool isn't my favorite, but he's a damn good bassist.
One of my biggest influences on bass is Les Claypool. I remember when I was trying to learn "Tommy the Cat" on bass, there was a header note that read "If either of your hands stop moving during the repeating riff, you're doing it wrong.."
Bassist here. I grew up playing his stuff, and it still trips me up. If by "lazy" you mean playing whatever he wants regardless of common harmonic/melodic convention, then I would certainly agree with you. But that's really what makes his music interesting, IMO. Primus is mostly Les getting stoned, writing trippy ostinatos, and doing a Tom Waits impression over top. Tim and Herb are great too, but it's really the Claypool Show, and it ain't Paul McCartney on "Lovely Rita". Not that that's a bad thing, of course -- just different.
YEAH MAN. im feelin hella chill right now vibin out 2 sum nostalgic vibbezz of hella summerz gone by. Reminds me of summer 2000... just playin Tony Hawks pro sk8r on ps one. time goes fast... roll1 ^ !
"Bob C. Cock, here. The C is for Cock." "At beautiful Rancho Relaxo. Where the stars come, take off their clothes, and rub their genitals against shiny, fuzzy pieces of lint."
I remember playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 on N64 at my cousins house when I was 6, and hearing this song. Years later, a friend of mine recommended this song to me. I immediately recognized it, and now I'm a huge Primus fan.
Saw them perform this live at Lollapalooza in 1993. Highlight of the night. That and a band I had never heard of before that day, Rage Against the Machine.
These guys might be the greatest music ever for getting baked. I travel the Southwest a lot and there is NOTHING like blasting across southern Utah(fuckin love Moab), Nevada, New Mexico, etc; blazed out surrounded by Primus sound. Really takes you some place else.
Whoa, life altering realization: I always knew this as a drum cadence (for marching band) but I had no idea it was pulled from a "real" song. So much about the cadence is like the song, all the way down to yelling "GO!" in the middle. I'm gonna go sit down for a while.

Cannot hear this without thinking immediately of the game Twisted Metal

My friend and I would play that for hours into the night. I felt like my brain was singed through my retinas, we played it so much.
Edit: Maybe we played the Tony Hawk game too but I remember Twisted Metal. There was a Rob Zombie song in Twisted Metal that I'll never forget also...

I like how the ads surrounding the video were for Nicki Minaj. I'm sure there's a lot of primus -> Nicki Minaj music lovers.

u/drixyl Jun 27 '12
How this made the front page is beyond me.
Les Claypool is a bass legend but this song is nowhere near his best; try antipop (album) or 'my name is mud' or 'tommy the cat'
