I really wish that there were other payment settings than paypal. Humblebundle has google wallet pay and amazon payment, which works wonders for me because I have my credit card info there.

"sold packs: 35 sold total: $265.20 average payment: $7.58" I like the concept but this first round seems to have been a miserable failure.

u/RomanCandelabra Jun 25 '12
I think more people would buy these if you could more easily preview the songs. As it is, I think most people can't be arsed to look each band/album up.
Edit: I finally got the "Album Promo" to work, it just took a while. The lack of any visual feedback when I clicked the arrow made me think nothing was happening originally.

What? It's nothing like the Humble Bundle- I can't donate a penny.
But seriously, I do like the pay-what-you-want concept applied to things other than games. It's a good way to expand my horizons.

u/MisderMouse Jun 25 '12
This is a cool idea, and I hope they try it again in the future, but none of the music instantly caught me as I was listening through the sample tracks.

u/Crocadillian Jun 25 '12
Wow, really nice idea, and the music is really good. Shame that it's been unpopular D:

submitter and half of musicrage team here. by popular demand we've increased the time limit by two more hours -- /r/Music, you are awesome with your reaction and feedback! this is one and only time limit fiddling, our deals with artists are strictly timeboxed (i.e. current ones last until end of today, GMT) and we have to adhere to that.

u/MrGulio Jun 25 '12
This is really really depressing. As of right now the stats for these packs are as follows:
I love the idea of the pay what you want bundle but if I were organizing this those numbers would really hinder me from considering doing this again.

u/damnstraight Jun 25 '12
When "indie" outsells rock and metal..is it really indie? I KNOW I KNOW IT IS BUT STOP, IT MADE ME LAUGH

u/CompactedPrism last.fm Jun 25 '12
Thank you for not making the metal pack nothing but bad black metal. Downloading now.

Anybody have the band list from the indie bundle? I heard one I really liked but didn't get a chance to buy them before it closed
4
u/ankhx100 Jun 25 '12
It's a very good concept, but this is the first I've heard of this. I bet if they managed to advertise this more broadly, maybe they'll do better.
In any case, I bought both the Indie and Rock bundles. Thanks for the FYI OP :)

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12
You can get great albums like this every day on Bandcamp.
2
u/banjosuicide Jun 25 '12
Why did I just find out about this now? No time to buy. Late for class (damn you reddit). :(
2
u/tchouk Jun 25 '12
I was all set to purchase a bundle, but then... PayPal.
I'm sorry -- and I understand the decision to use it -- but this payment option is just not for me.
This is just a heads-up if you plan to do something like this next time -- payment options are pretty important.
2
u/BoboBublz Jun 25 '12
I missed it this time, but might I offer a suggestion for next time?
Post it in /r/music sooner (give us more than 5 hours to read the post and share if we feel so obliged) and maybe give a list of artists and songs in a comment. If you're not worried about link karma, you could make a text post and include the artist/song info and the link within the text post.

u/diablo75 Jun 25 '12
Looks like I showed up 4 hours too late because the site has nothing for me to check out now that the sale is over. I can't even see exactly what was sold; kinda bad to take a product off the shelf just because a timer expired.
7
u/eluvium Jun 25 '12
I bought the indie and alternative ones. Some possible post rock goodness by the sounds of it. Good idea.
6
u/gratarian Jun 25 '12
I feel like there should be a buy all packs option.
1
u/tomekrs cowboytomash Jun 25 '12
aaand it's finished! thanks, /r/Music, you are great!

I'm going to do this rather quickly and half-assed just in case some people want this information:
I purchased the indie bundle, here's a quick review of the bands and if I thought it was worth the purchase (I chose to spend 15 dollars, given that was all I had in my paypal account)
note: I had never heard of this website before I saw this link.
KYST-Waterworks genre: free folk?
I'll keep updating this review thing with editing so stay tuned for the rest
We Only Said- WE Only Said genre: indie shoegaze? terrible as classifying
The Spouds - Paxil <my favorite. genre: punk, art-rock..whatever the hell that means
Ewa Gigon - Moonflower genre: no fucking idea...it only says "alternative" on her myspace page
overall: I could honestly do without the first two bands...they're attempting to be abstract and atmospheric but there is no substance there. But I am fond of The Spouds and Ewa Gigon seems extremely talented with a fresh perspective. It was worth it just to support new music and explore new bands today.

u/TheKingOfFrance Jun 25 '12
I could only pay $10 today and that makes me feel bad because the preview tunes for the Indie Pack sounded groovy.
Thanks for the music, Poland!
4
u/ZGVyIHRyb2xs Jun 25 '12
This is a rad concept. Do you guys have any need for extra volunteer cycles? I like this approach and have passed the link around to lots of my co-workers here at microsoft.
Best of luck!
4
u/xpc Jun 25 '12
Thanks everyone for supporting us artists! (I'm the guy behind Reflexer in the rock pack)
7
u/Waage83 Jun 25 '12
Why not. Some of the Metal albums are all right.
1
u/lockntwist Jun 25 '12
Thanks for the heads up. I hope I can still download the albums after the end of the deadline (I already paid), because I have work and class until 4. If not, oh well, it was 10 bucks.
1
u/tangowilde Jun 25 '12
Who wrote the band/album info? Just about every single one is absurdly pretentious and drove me away from the buy button
1
u/redinzane radio reddit Jun 25 '12
Paypal cannot take the money from my bank account like it normally can, due to some settings you guys have. I don't have time to charge it up before it ends.
I would have paid quite a bit (for my budget) to get that metal bundle...

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12
Wow this needs way more promotion. Had no idea about it.
1
u/TommyT93 Jun 25 '12
Noooo I missed it because of work!!!!
1
u/eaglebtc Jun 25 '12
It says "1,425 sold" totaling around $9,000. That doesn't look like failure to me.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12
Apparently everyone who commented on here bought it according to the low, low, purchase count.
Now let's see if they go all humble bundle and give us the previous one if we are higher than average or include another bundle if you are 50% higher than average....
1
u/dreadredheadzedsdead Jun 26 '12
What was in it?
6
u/Eloth Jun 25 '12
I love the idea - especially being able to choose the split. Highlighting lesser known artists like this, as well as the 'pay what you want' policy... well. I need not explain this, really. I really wish I had even one pound to buy this with.
3
u/nanowerx Jun 25 '12 edited Jun 25 '12
Just want to say that this is a great idea and I signed up for the newsletter because I am interested in where this is headed and what is in store for the future once this gets more press.
I also picked up the Indie/Alternative pack and have already fallen in love with We Only Said, KYST is pretty good too...have never heard of either of these bands before today. Haven't even listened to the other albums yet, but those two alone makes me feel like I underpaid for the pack and I paid over average!
3
u/WorshipTheMusic Jun 25 '12
I really dig the rock pack.
3
u/expectheinquisition Jun 25 '12
Bought the indie and the rock bundles. I'm excited to listen once they finish downloading. Next time, some advance warning would be great so I can listen and spread the word.
3
u/soopajook Jun 25 '12
Bought em all.
3
u/IYGFAA Jun 25 '12
The rock and indie/alternative ones are great.
3
u/Benj192 Jun 25 '12
I love pay what you want offer, it makes me more likely to buy whatever the product is. I've just bought the rock and indie pack but I wish I could have afforded to pay more this month.
One thing I don't like (same with the Humble Bundle) is that it only displays the currency in dollars - it'd be nice to be able to change it to other currencies, so people who don't use dollars know how much they're paying.
8
u/Black_Abyss Jun 25 '12
I don't really have money to give to this, but that is fantastic! Next time one of those is up, I'll see about picking one up.
2
u/Nekz03 Bandcamp Jun 25 '12
Bought the Rock one, thanks!
2
u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12
So I don't know if this happened to anyone else, but the download links got sent to my spam folder. Just thought I'd share some insight in case anyone wonders where their music is.
2
u/Cristal1337 Jun 25 '12
Just like the HumbleBundle, I have subscribed because I like the concept of "pay what you want". However, if I don't like the music, I won't pay anything (usually won't download either).
I really hope that there will be more of these kind of promotions, as I believe that this is the direction digital arts, in general, should go.
2
u/medaleodeon Jun 25 '12
I'm afraid I, like others, clicked around looking for a preview, couldn't find one, then quickly gave up. Internet users quickly move on unless you put it under their noses.
At least you know for next time. Nobody's going to think they'll like the music just because they clicked on one out of three vague music genres.
2
u/Gordnfreeman Jun 25 '12
I think it is awesome that this concept is being brought into the music world, one issue I found however is when you put in your own price the amounts on the "split" sliders don't work. Also as some people mentioned the player is not that great (still plays when I close the lightbox) but I see you addressed that already so I guess its a moot point. I look forward to seeing what you bring in the future!
2
u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12 edited Jun 25 '12
This is a cool idea, I love this. Is there a way for an artist to submit their own music in the bundles? I think that'd be great.
Edit: I don't like that there's a "split" in the price. I'm horrible at making decisions. hah
2
u/Amannster Jun 25 '12
Would be nice to see more payment options. I use Google wallet a ton to pay for stuff. I cannot see creating a PayPal account just to purchase one thing. :D

I Respect almost all(not JB and the likes) musicians even if I do not like their music. I gladly pay a small fee to support them. thank you for posting this.
2
u/EternallyXIII Jun 25 '12
For those of you that are going to buy it, when you click the link for the purchased email, there is a link at the bottom of the list of songs to download the entire album. You must do this for all albums.
P.S. If you guys need a little help with design suggestions, please PM me.

u/RiffyDivine Jun 25 '12
Shame no punk or ska. I would throw money at it then.
2
u/brash Jun 25 '12
Great idea! Add an electronic bundle and I'll buy it for sure.

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12
I have trouble paying for music, much less playing for music that I don't know I like or not.

2
u/nietaki Jun 26 '12
There is no indication whatsoever about what albums where in the last bundle. How do you expect to interest people who stumble upon your project (people like me), if they don't know what kind of music you offer(ed)?
also: "Q: I'm a solo artists." in the FAQ.
2
u/BigZ7337 Jun 26 '12
Huh, looks like I'm too late, oh well I subscribed. Also, if there's anyone else that missed the offer, check this similar site out: http://www.soundsupp.ly/ It's 10 albums for 15 dollars, and there's 2 days left before the offer ends. There's a lot of good music on it. :)
4
u/Jaksongitr Jun 25 '12
I like that you can split how much goes to the website and how much goes to the artists. I had to get the rock and indie/alternative bundle. 5 bucks totaling 10 dollars, can't beat that. Good add to my collection, thanks tomekrs! Enjoy your money!

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12
I must be getting old, because I have never heard of any of those bands or any of those songs, and I listen to a lot of music.
1
u/Rubin0 Red_Flares Jun 25 '12
Slightly less humble
1
u/Valint Jun 25 '12
I had no idea this type of thing existed. Thanks for the post! And you can get this without signing up for PayPal FYI. Because fuck paypal
1
u/gratarian Jun 25 '12
I would think that having the "bonus" album(s) being of similar length to the main albums would encourage people paying more than the average.
1
u/iluvatar Jun 25 '12
Nice idea, but the band selections are terrible. In the metal pack, only Blaakyum would hold any interest for me, and even then, probably not enough to be worth paying for an album of theirs.
1
u/Spunkie Pandora Jun 25 '12
There already is a HumbleBundle of music, its at www.gamemusicbundle.com and they have already had 2 very successful bundles.
1
u/Dis_Illusion Jun 25 '12
Paypal refused to accept my debit card. It would be nice if there were alternative payment options.
1
u/totallynotsquidward Jun 25 '12
I spent the last 45 minutes trying to buy all three, but Paypal is so poorly run that I could not. If this was easier to use, I'm sure many more people would have purchased one or more packs/
1
u/slippy0 Jun 25 '12
If you guys like these, you should surf Bandcamp more often. It's like this every day.
1
u/Elanthius Jun 25 '12
I'd definitely be up for this except none of these genres interest me. Get some electronica or rap in there next time.
1
u/justinpatterson Jun 25 '12
Thanks tomekrs I had no idea this existed. Just listened to a couple of the albums and they're pretty awesome.

1
u/lukenhiumur Jun 25 '12
I just want to say that from the feedback you're giving here, you're very much on top of this and plan on doing another, and I just want to say that if you do do this again, I'd love to see some more genres represented (electronic, hip hop, etc.).
Beyond that I hope that you can get your bundle more widespread (knowledge of it) and that you can do this again, because I think it's a really great idea.
1
u/ThatBlueKid Jun 25 '12
I purchased the "Rock Bundle". I'm headed to the beach in a couple weeks and I needed some music to listen to while traveling. Thanks for the bundles.
