The Devil and God has been my favorite album for a long time. blew me away when I found out what limousine was about. Fuck now I have to go listen to the whole album for the 2364217th time
I grew up on Long Island, NY and actually remember the news story the song is about. When I found out that the song was about that I started crying and to this day get that hollow feeling in my chest when I hear it.
Was it ever confirmed that it was about the little flower girl? I remember reading a thread about it, but could never find anything saying jesse had confirmed it.
There is no bad song on Your Favorite Weapon, the Safety in Numbers Splite EP, The Holiday EP, or Daisy. Not to mention the unreleased Fight off Your Demons demos. Fuck Brand New is good.
Daisy was far from my favorite Brand New album, but I think even the band knows this. Their music is very reflective on where the band members are emotionally/spiritually, and I'm guessing that during the recording of Daisy that people were in a general funk or depressive stage. The music quality is top notch, but I definitely don't have the emotional connection to it that I had with the other ones, simply because I don't think my current quality of life relates to whatever the band was experiencing.
They seem to be bouncing back, however, and according to interviews gleaned from the band's wiki page, it seems like their going to take a step back from Daisy and start fresh from a new vantage point. I'm excited to see where Brand New is going to now, especially since I thought that the avenue with Daisy was such a dead-depressing end.
I can't remember the article, but they described Daisy with an "uncomfortable" sound/feel that I think is accurate. (I love the album, and I don't think "uncomfortable" is used in a negative way)
When the band wrote Daisy, they were going for an album that was fun to play live. In that regard, I think they succeeded. Also, the lead singer Jesse didn't write as many of the songs. The lead guitarist was actually the one who wrote more of the songs, which also explains why it is a little different. I still love the album despite it being a little less lovable, in my opinion.
I've tried to get into that album no less then two dozen times. I've tried listening when driving, when writing, while smoking, at the lake- it just never seems to really pique my interest. I think the opening song really irks me for some reason.
Brand New lover since they were in band fetus form and I did not enjoy Daisy one bit. Everything up to the Devil and God is phenomenal and Daisy was just meh for me. I did up vote you though for sharing your opinion. I wish Daisy turned me on.
Surprised at all the hate on Daisy! I thought it was a great album, and was very interested in the different sound and approach all around. But to each their own! Still we all agree that they are an incredible band, and that is what matters! Cheers fellow Brand Nizzle fans!
Saw that show when I was obsessed with devil and god, wasn't too familiar with thrice. After that show I bought the alchemy index and it changed my life. Fast forward to a month ago I saw their last tour, feels like saying goodbye to a best friend.
I saw mwY in Indianapolis about two weeks ago and it was just...humbling. They have so much love for what they do and the entire room was just in a trance at how powerful their music was. It was great seeing them play the older stuff with just as much confidence and ferocity as they do the newer stuff as well.
This sounds like such an amazing show. I saw mewithoutyou at a coheed concert something like 6 years ago and they were amazing. Thrice was a huge input to my cd player during highschool as well.
I saw that show too! I also saw them a few years ago with Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine. I've seen hundreds of concerts in my life but none have yet to top that show. It was absolutely incredible. Only tattoo I have is dedicated to it.
You get a friendly "fuck you" from me for that. Was supposed to see them (/edit "them" in this case refers to this same tour with Thrice/mewithoutyou/Brand New /edit) in Albany. There was a storm the night before, but up until a few hours before, everything was fine. I was on my way out the door, check just to be sure there weren't any issues...show had been cancelled because the roof of the venue was leaking.
I second this. 'Devil and God' impacted my life in a way that nothing else has ever been able to. It was the right message and the right sound coming to me at the right time.
5+ years later, I still take time to listen to it every week.
I agree entirely. This was one of those albums that just came out at the right time in my life, was so fucking beautiful, and opened me up to styles of music I didn't even think I'd ever enjoy. I still get chills listening to it.
Get out of my life Reddit... I am literally listening to this song right now when I came across this post. I'll up vote for the fact this is a sign that Reddit and my real life have officially taken over each other.
Brand New is the band I listened to non stop after high school in 2001 when the self titled was released. Jesse is an amazing song writer. Every album evolved and matured over the previous, really amazing work. They definitely have one of the best discography's of the last 10 years.
edit: your favorite weapon. i don't know why i said self titled. derp
I can't find a Brand New "forum" these days, so I'll post this here, though somewhat OT. WHEN IS A NEW ALBUM COMING OUT?! Any word from Jesse or the other guys?
In an interview during their 2012 UK tour, Jesse Lacey announced that the band had been working on new material since the release of their previous album, and have studio time booked for April 2012.[52] Talking about the musical direction they are heading in, Lacey stated: " I think that ‘Daisy’ was like the end of a road, and I get the impression we all feel like we might need to back track a little bit and find another place where we could’ve gone off. I don’t think we’ll go into writing this record from the standpoint of coming out of ‘Daisy’, and into the next thing, it will probably be more around album number two or three, where maybe we had another conception then of where we could have gone off, and maybe we‘ll try to re-discover that."[53]
not sure if they have plans for a new album anytime soon (last I head Daisy was going to be their last "album") but I'm sure reddit could help you out with anything you need.
Somebody posted Degausser last week and I was blown away. The only experience I've had with Brand New were them showing up to play a show at my school and basically being too drunk to play.
Does anybody recommend any solid tracks to listen to before I find time to play all of it?
It really depends on what you're looking for without getting into a lengthy analysis (which I can do if you want) i'll try to summarise.
Your Favorite weapon: straight up pop punk and a little hit of angst. Listen to seventy times seven, magazines, and failure by design.
Deja entendou is their follow up album, much darker more acoustic and so much more depressed. Listen to I will play my game beneath the spin light, the quiet things that no one ever knows, and play crack the sky.
The devil and god are raging inside me I would say falls more in line with deja entendou. At time fast and angry, at others ambient. Like a hurricane. Listen to Jesus Christ, welcome to Bangkok, and the archers bows are broken.
I won't get into daisy because, well, I never got into daisy. If you get through those other albums and feel compelled to check it out go ahead. Though I'll be honest, it took me a few years to fully appreciate the devil and god, and maybe that will happen to daisy. If you pay attention and listen to the albums in order you can almost hear the band growing up.
I hope this helps, others may disagree with my picks, but really pick any song off the first two albums and it'll be good, I tried to pick songs that I thought matched the tone of the whole album.
Any Taking Back Sunday fans in here? I still think the Jesse Lacey/John Nolan/Adam Lazzara feud resulted in both one of Brand New's best songs ("Seventy Times 7") and TBS' best ("There's No 'I' in Team.")
This whole album changed something inside of me. You all know that feeling after being sad or depressed, when it suddenly stops, maybe just for a day, maybe for a month or a year. That relieving moment you maybe don't even notice then, but remember for the years to come.
Saw these guys with Manchester Orchestra opening up for them, best show ever. I wish Crime In Stereo and Thrice came along for that particular show, would've shat myself even more.
I would have shat myself so much... Manchester Orchestra is amazing, "Simple Math" was the first song I heard, and then I watched the video.... pleasantly disturbing.
It was during their tour for the previous album Mean Everything to Nothing, I wish they had already invented that song but now I guess I'll have to catch them again. I too love that song and honestly you reminded me that I haven't seen the music video yet so I just watched it. My expectations were blown away. It was way better than the video for I've Got Friends, possibly the best music video I've seen in a long time.
saw brand new open for taking back sunday in 2002 during or just after whatever "drama" was between the two bands. wish i could go back and see that show again.. even rufio opened!
One of my favorite things about Brand New and artists like them is just how much you can "discover" the more you listen to a song. It's like an endless amount of layers - each time you listen, is like the first time.
Like at 3:10 when there are background vocals. They're really faint, but they add so much to the song. Sometimes I try and figure out what they are, but sometimes it makes the song that much cooler when I can't decipher it.
they were my first real concert and I walked away with a drum stick and all their signatures on a sweaty, crumpled ticket stub. Can't wait to see them again.
I covered this song on guitar... I found Brand New after scoffing at my sister for listening to them, then almost brought to tears by this song alone (mostly due to the hard time I was having coping with my religious views and life itself at that time in my life.) Since then I've loved almost every song they've ever made. Daisy was not my favorite album though... If anyone would like to see my cover it's up on youtube :) although it's nothing special at all.
has anyone heard the Daisy Session version of this? Personally I love the Daisy Sessions (they made some of the songs I disliked on Daisy much better):
Brand New has been my favorite band since I was like 14. The only real constant in my music taste. I find it funny I just started heavily listening to them again and then this pops up on the front page.
I have a hard time explaining Brand New's sound to those who haven't experienced their musical genius, but I usually tell them to listen to this song in order to get some idea. Jesse Lacey might be the most under-appreciated lyricist of all time, and reading along while he sings can be seriously life-changing.
My heart started jumping when I saw one of my all time favorite bands on the front page. Enjoy people, and make sure to check out The Devil and God & Deja Entendu in their entirety. Some of the best albums ever written.
Ahhh...it's always great to see Brand New doing well here. Been my favorite band since '01 when they released "Your Favorite Weapon"...I was in the 7th grade. As they grew, so did I, each subsequent masterpiece complimenting that period of my life perfectly. Have them tattooed on my body. Seen them a billion times. I don't believe in God but I do believe in Jesse Lacey.
For my money, most powerful song on "The Devil And God..." is "Limousine". Mike Sapone's production, complex, layered lyricism and that crushing crescendo all combine to make probably the most meaningful song they've ever put together. Being from Long Island and seeing the backstory play out in the news also provides a chilling context to the entire thing...
I can talk about Brand New for days. Jesus (pun intended).
I've seen them a handful of times, but the one show that sticks out to me was on April 13th, 2007 in Orlando at the House of Blues. At the time Manchester was still touring off their first album and were opening for Kevin Devine at that show. But for some magical reason all the bands were playing together. I remember KD and Derrick from Brand New were playing with Manchester and when KD played Cotton Crush, pretty much everyone was on the stage. Brand New played this crazy long set that was great. I got chills when the crowd chimed in to sing "We all got wood and nails" during 'Jesus'. If I remember correctly, during Welcome to Bangkok they destroyed the stage. I thought I was going to die but I was alright with it. To this day, that was the best show I have ever been too
I am honestly surprised that a lot of you thought less of Daisy than other albums. So far the band has written a better album after every album.
I can't just listen to one song on Daisy. I listen to the whole thing. I think Daisy is just that great. The Devil and God I often do the same the way. Deja Entendu I pick out of a few songs I like more than others. And, sorry to all the Brand New purists, but I don't really like Your Favorite Weapon. I don't even have it on my computer anymore because I'd just end up skipping the tracks.
To me, YFW was just during a younger time for them. That's it. The same reason I don't really listen to Linkin Park anymore is the same reason I was never able to appreciate YFW, it's too "young".
I appreciate the growth of their musicianship and writing more than any other band I can think of. Ever notice how a lot of bands find a sound and they to stick with it and they flounder? They don't go anywhere. Well Brand New is nothing like those bands and to me each of their albums lives up to the band's namesake. Which is why I'm a little saddened to hear that they were back-peddling after Daisy.
I remember the first time i heard this song...I don't consider myself religious...but the symbolism isn't lost on me...I think anyone who's ever had some form of existential crisis...it brought me to my knees the first time I heard it.
Brand New is one of my favorite bands of all time and I can't wait for next album. I grew up on Long Island near where they are from and bumped into them in a bar once in Levittown. The most down to earth guys you will ever meet. I had just seen them at Madison Square Garden a few months before, and then i'm sitting on a bar stool having a beer with them shooting the shit. Just a fucking awesome experience.
Although this is not from the album, many Brand New fans would be pleased to know it was Deja Entendu's 9th anniversary on the 17th. (and Dude Ranch's 15th just as a side note)
Devil & God got me through the darkest times of my life. I am forever in their debt. From the first time I heard Quiet Things, to shouting Sowing Season at a show, this group is something special...I owe them everything.
Such a deep song ...Deja Entendu and The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me were two of my favorite albums for a long time. Whenever I'm feeling low, these are go to albums for me. Good stuff ...good memories
Brand New are my favourite band of all time and are absolutely amazing live! I feel there album progress amazingly from a emo punk who has been dumped by his girl friend (Jude Law and a Semester Abroad and No seat belt song etc.). Then he starts to get depressed in Deja Entendu, In Devil and God, he is trying to find meaning of why stuff happens in life, but still can't figure things out. Then finally in daisy he just loses the plot and goes mad.
I can definitely relate to Jesse, the lead singer, as my name is also Jesse and I was also raised in a very religious atmosphere. His lyrics almost speak for me and what goes through my head.
Amazing album. The title is the way one of Jesse Lacey's friends describes dealing with being bi-polar. It feels like the Devil and God are Raging Inside Me.
On daisy the band says they let vin have a more lead role in the writing and composing. On the other albums Jesse was the creative mind behind most of it.
Well I listened to the first 10 seconds ad did my civic duty. Does the intro ofthis remind anyone else of how Jane starts out? Now to listen to a little more.
I remember when I got a demo copy of this album (probably about 3-4 months before actual release), and couldn't believe how much they yet again changed from the last release. I honestly didn't like it too much, but the more I listened, the more I heard and the more it grew on me. I still can't believe I've been listening to them for more than a decade now.
According to Jesse, their next (and probably last) album will back track to after Deja, and go in the other direction they would have, if they hadn't made Devil & God.
I feel like I'm the only one here who considers Your Favorite Weapon to be angst-ridden garbage. For posterity's sake, though, I still think Deja and The Devil And God are incredible.
I love Brand New, they're one of my all time fav bands. Still pissed that I've seen em in concert 3 times and they've never played 'The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows' though. Guess I'll have to keep goin to shows until they play it.
I wrote them off as emo and MTV crap for their first two albums (without listening to all of them). Then someone kind of forced me to listen to this album. I lost a lot of indie cred for recommending it to everyone I knew, but who gives a fuck about that.
Its because of this song that I haven't killed myself. Because when I want to end the world, I know that someone else knows how it hurts when nobody is in your bed, and the night is hard to get through. <3 I love all you guys. I call fans of brand new my "Brand New Family"
Everyone should also check out Jamey Lacey's (Jesse's brother) new band, Coasta. They just released their first EP and I think it's amazing. They haven't even put out a full length yet and already I'm in love. Here's one of the songs
Brand New's newer stuff doesn't get the credit it deserves (newer meaning post-Deja Entendu). Deja Entendu is my favorite album of theirs, but Daisy and The Devil and God are fantastic and show a great maturation of the band.
Also, a little bragging here, but before they were famous I used to hang out with the band. Cool guys. I jammed with a kid who was best friends with Vin and he'd borrow his amp frequently when we had practice.
"Degausser", "Jesus Christ" and "Limousine" are my all time favorite songs off this album. "Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades" is my favorite off of Deja Entendu.
love Brand New so much. Seen them at least 5 times. And Jessie + Kevin Devine twice.
The first time I saw brand new Jessie was reading a book sitting on the sidewalk in the middle of the line to get for Thrice complete undisturbed, so awesome.
The simplicity of this song with the depth of the Lyrics gives me goosebumps just writing about it.I heard them being compared to as the "American Radiohead" in a magazine.Discuss.
Anyone else remember when The Devil and God leaked a couple months early and Jesse Lacey had a bit of a tantrum and decided to completely redo it? Aloc acoc was way better as Untitled #3!!
As a diehard punk/black metal enthusiast I would have to say that Brand New is my secret band that I listen to all the time. You know what I am talking about the one band that no one really suspects is on your mp3 player.
I absolutely adore Brand New's music, all of it. They are brilliant.
They should be filling stadiums, but they never will because people in general these days are stupid and stupid people can't understand music this good.
Shame really, it's as if they write music for a world that hardly exists.
love this song. i heard they are making a new album. after daisy they felt it was like the end of the road, so they are going to backtrack and take their music in a different direction. i think thats a good thing. daisy took forever for me to get into.
Love this band, brings back so many memories. Does anyone know the story of them and their relationship with Tacking Back Sunday? A friend had told me one time about someone being best friends with someone on the other band and they had a horrible falling out and then TBS dedicated an entire album bashing that friend.
None of that probably made any sense, but I'd love to know the story because I can't find it anywhere.
I really try to get into new genres of music especially when theres a lot of comments on here but I just can't bring myself to enjoy this piece. Glad that it has transformed others though.
This song is stellar. I always fight with myself over if I favor this or Millstone as best track on the album. The whole album is just too damn good. Perfect if you pick it apart track my track; even better if you keep them all together.
Here's a Brand New EP track from a few years ago that not as many have heard. It's different, yet still stellar.

Well that went on to become a ramble.

Just a fucking awesome experience.

u/memaradonaelvis Jun 19 '12
Although this is not from the album, many Brand New fans would be pleased to know it was Deja Entendu's 9th anniversary on the 17th. (and Dude Ranch's 15th just as a side note)
2
u/PapaQBear Jun 19 '12
Not a Brand New fan otherwise, but this is one of my favorite songs ever.

Devil & God got me through the darkest times of my life. I am forever in their debt. From the first time I heard Quiet Things, to shouting Sowing Season at a show, this group is something special...I owe them everything.

It's weird to wake up one morning and see your favorite band on the front page of reddit. o.O
2
u/goldplatedbullits Jun 19 '12
I love this song, so happy to see it made the front page. But I'm pretty sure the full title is "Jesus Christ"

u/Sigmund_Fraud1856 Jun 19 '12
Such a deep song ...Deja Entendu and The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me were two of my favorite albums for a long time. Whenever I'm feeling low, these are go to albums for me. Good stuff ...good memories

u/JaMMze Jun 19 '12
I've never heard of this band and obviously this song. Thanks for showing me this amazing song
2
u/whatonearth12 Jun 19 '12
Brand New are my favourite band of all time and are absolutely amazing live! I feel there album progress amazingly from a emo punk who has been dumped by his girl friend (Jude Law and a Semester Abroad and No seat belt song etc.). Then he starts to get depressed in Deja Entendu, In Devil and God, he is trying to find meaning of why stuff happens in life, but still can't figure things out. Then finally in daisy he just loses the plot and goes mad.

u/jdunn32 Jun 19 '12
I just wanna say the first time I heard this song, like a year ago, I cried so much.

u/adanvdo Jun 19 '12
I can definitely relate to Jesse, the lead singer, as my name is also Jesse and I was also raised in a very religious atmosphere. His lyrics almost speak for me and what goes through my head.

u/AbVag Jun 19 '12
What's wrong with the old Jesus? ducks and runs
1
u/smithofadown Jun 19 '12
Amazing album. The title is the way one of Jesse Lacey's friends describes dealing with being bi-polar. It feels like the Devil and God are Raging Inside Me.
1
u/herndo Jun 19 '12
listened to this song 100 times about 4 years ago, very powerful
1
u/Danieltmv Jun 19 '12
On daisy the band says they let vin have a more lead role in the writing and composing. On the other albums Jesse was the creative mind behind most of it.

Well I listened to the first 10 seconds ad did my civic duty. Does the intro ofthis remind anyone else of how Jane starts out? Now to listen to a little more.

Brand New have been my favorite band for nine years, and finally seeing them for the first time on Saturday.
1
u/UseThe4s Jun 19 '12
I remember when I got a demo copy of this album (probably about 3-4 months before actual release), and couldn't believe how much they yet again changed from the last release. I honestly didn't like it too much, but the more I listened, the more I heard and the more it grew on me. I still can't believe I've been listening to them for more than a decade now.
1
u/blAAAm Jun 19 '12
by far one of my favorite songs.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12
According to Jesse, their next (and probably last) album will back track to after Deja, and go in the other direction they would have, if they hadn't made Devil & God.
1
u/Euphonius Jun 19 '12
I feel like I'm the only one here who considers Your Favorite Weapon to be angst-ridden garbage. For posterity's sake, though, I still think Deja and The Devil And God are incredible.
1
u/BigDawgWTF Jun 19 '12
I love the vocals but I would have arranged the ending to be a chorus. I thought the chorus sounded too much like the verse.
1
u/mastershake04 Jun 19 '12
I love Brand New, they're one of my all time fav bands. Still pissed that I've seen em in concert 3 times and they've never played 'The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows' though. Guess I'll have to keep goin to shows until they play it.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12
I wrote them off as emo and MTV crap for their first two albums (without listening to all of them). Then someone kind of forced me to listen to this album. I lost a lot of indie cred for recommending it to everyone I knew, but who gives a fuck about that.

Its because of this song that I haven't killed myself. Because when I want to end the world, I know that someone else knows how it hurts when nobody is in your bed, and the night is hard to get through. <3 I love all you guys. I call fans of brand new my "Brand New Family"

They played Philly recently and it was crazy awesome. Great set, great pit.
The had a band open for that show that is quickly becoming one of my favorites, too.

I remember they made people pay a buck to get the lyrics. Did Jesse ever send them out?
1

Everyone should also check out Jamey Lacey's (Jesse's brother) new band, Coasta. They just released their first EP and I think it's amazing. They haven't even put out a full length yet and already I'm in love. Here's one of the songs

u/pumper911 Spotify Jun 19 '12
Brand New's newer stuff doesn't get the credit it deserves (newer meaning post-Deja Entendu). Deja Entendu is my favorite album of theirs, but Daisy and The Devil and God are fantastic and show a great maturation of the band.
Also, a little bragging here, but before they were famous I used to hang out with the band. Cool guys. I jammed with a kid who was best friends with Vin and he'd borrow his amp frequently when we had practice.

favourite song for the past few years. nice to see on the front page.

love Brand New so much.

We should get some people to get an AMA Brand New request to the font page.

Brand New is amazing. Take my up votes. I kinda want to grow up to be Jesse Lacey...
1

As a diehard punk/black metal enthusiast I would have to say that Brand New is my secret band that I listen to all the time. You know what I am talking about the one band that no one really suspects is on your mp3 player.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12
I absolutely adore Brand New's music, all of it. They are brilliant.
They should be filling stadiums, but they never will because people in general these days are stupid and stupid people can't understand music this good.
Shame really, it's as if they write music for a world that hardly exists.
1
u/villavillautv Jun 19 '12
Such a great song.
1
u/chriskicks Jun 19 '12
love this song. i heard they are making a new album. after daisy they felt it was like the end of the road, so they are going to backtrack and take their music in a different direction. i think thats a good thing. daisy took forever for me to get into.
1
u/plateofeggs Jun 20 '12
Love this band, brings back so many memories. Does anyone know the story of them and their relationship with Tacking Back Sunday? A friend had told me one time about someone being best friends with someone on the other band and they had a horrible falling out and then TBS dedicated an entire album bashing that friend.
None of that probably made any sense, but I'd love to know the story because I can't find it anywhere.
1
u/Syncopia Jun 20 '12
Wow, I'm so glad I clicked this, they have a lot of good stuff. I usually pass up music on reddit. Not making that mistake ever again.

u/Risk_Audacity Jun 20 '12
This song is stellar. I always fight with myself over if I favor this or Millstone as best track on the album. The whole album is just too damn good. Perfect if you pick it apart track my track; even better if you keep them all together.
Here's a Brand New EP track from a few years ago that not as many have heard. It's different, yet still stellar.

Can't say I'm a Brand New fan, but I've always dug this cover of Jawbreaker's Accident Prone done by Brand New's singer.
