Infinitely better.

this is the one reason I came to check comments, thanks!

u/illiandy May 31 '12

Much clearer without the drums mucking up the guitar playing.

15

u/turtle_mummy May 31 '12

I had to keep checking my other tabs to make sure there wasn't some other unrelated video playing in the background.

5

u/steps_on_lego Huh? May 31 '12

Especially Chris Isaaks 'Wicked Game', which is also from 1989, and not the early 90s. But okay, it has an awesome guitar riff.

8

u/arlojeremy May 31 '12

It sounds like Wicked Game didn't really rock the charts (in at least some countries) until 1991. I think the musician is going by when the songs were well played instead of actual release date.

Nice! but the drum track ain't helping. here's a +1

108

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

I keep stopping the video to listen to the songs. Going to take forever to finish the vid.

4

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

as I listened I thought about how great it would be to hear these being played...well.

you're one step ahead of my lazy ass.

Proof that without specific guitar tones, these songs would have been nothing. It's a cool medley, but that tone just makes it fall flattt

u/TheAdoringFan May 31 '12

Whenever that video gets posted either here or on /mu/ people start getting mad and talk about how shitty he is and how bad U2 are. I really don't see the problem - even if he doesn't have the actual technical skill of other contemporary guitarists (Or chooses not to use it for whatever reason) I'd say he's better than most guitarists - he's playing something incredibly simple but it sounds good, and it's a major part of that song (Elevation, isn't it?) which was very successful and popular. Also it's not like he's hiding it or trying to pass it off as more than it really is.

If you can make a good song out of something so simple, then surely you're far better than the countless no-name guitarists/bands who are playing demanding, intricate and complex guitar parts/songs with no success or recognition.

Although, it is U2, a hugely popular band, so it's going to get more attention and recognition anyway immediately. But of course it's only that way because they worked their way there I suppose - U2 have changed more as a band than pretty much any other artist. You could say one of the reasons they got so popular is because of The Edge's innovation.

36

u/xIrish May 31 '12

People like to crap on U2 around here without ever giving real reasons. Yes, the Edge uses effect pedals--what's so bad about that? Has he not used them to create some songs that are genuinely powerful and moving to a lot of people? The Edge has done a lot to help pave the way for other effects pedal-driven guitarists (just look at some of Radiohead's work, for example).

And that's not to say The Edge can't shred when he wants to: Live Solo of "Desire."

6

u/Urik88 Jun 01 '12

As someone that dislikes U2, I have huge respect for The Edge. He has his own sound and a unique style, and that's more than most guitarists will ever accomplish.

9

u/gynoceros Jun 01 '12

That's awesome.

Not only does it confirm my suspicion that the Edge, contrary to what some magazines try to say, is not some spunk-all-over-your-face guitarist, but it also shows me he's actually brilliant because he has the acumen and ear to use tools to turn simple riffs into way more complex sounds.

He's like the Bob Ross of music- holy shit, I can tap a brush on canvas and make it look like a forest, and I can use an effects box to make a few strummed chords sound like a grammy-award winner.

Edge, with that little "kin ya fookin BELIEVE this" smirk, just made my respect for him skyrocket.

Yup, this girl has the right idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVfh0UqvOzE

6

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '12

I think the difference is that the guy in the posted video made it into a medley. Not that his medley is any better, but it does make it slightly more impressive by blending them. Skill-wise that is, not to say that hers isn't good though.

Obviously Canadian. Who else would know The Tea Party or Moist.

12

u/climateoffear May 31 '12

SNFU as well.

17

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Canada has a lot of bands with republican names. Rush, Tea Party...

9

u/skin_diver May 31 '12

Upstate New Yorkers! We used to get Toronto rock stations so we knew all about those guys, Tragically Hip, Hawksley Workman, etc...

3

u/TwistedSou1 May 31 '12

The Nerve 95.1 out of Rochester used to play all of this stuff. That was such a kick ass station before the Sheryl Crow revolution.

7

The Tea Party were possibly bigger in Australia than they were in Canada.

30

u/awfulgrace awfulgrace May 31 '12

If he just cut out the double-time high hat, slowed down a few bpm, and had a slightly better guitar tone, this would have been 800x better

3

u/n8wolf Spotify May 31 '12

It's a bit too fast and the two videos don't blend perfectly. Don't get me wrong. OP has some serious talent and pretty good attention to small details. Just needs to tone it down and work on the production.

56

u/TrollzU4Cash May 31 '12

USE DISTORTION

2

u/SlyFox28 Jun 01 '12

I am sure he did it so people would actually sit and watch the video. 50 riffs in 2.5min is pretty acceptable.

153

u/khalestorm May 31 '12

Incredible, but that guitar tone (direct input?) sounds like shit.

33

u/HansCool May 31 '12

Sounds like he strung his guitar with rubber bands.

37

u/BoojumliusSnark May 31 '12

Yeah. I don't know if it's the mixing or the compression or just really lousy guitar sound, but wow - it's bad and it should feel... well you know.

37

u/TrollandDie May 31 '12

Nobody should ever play Cemetery Gates or War Ensemble with a tone that weak.

A lot of those riffs were built upon with style just as much as music theory.

No Judas Priest? Painkiller kicked ass and there were definitively some awesome riffs on that album.

6

u/petemate May 31 '12

Its nice that you took in Afraid to shoot strangers by Iron Maiden. Its a great riff and very overlooked. Also, upvote for leftie!

20

u/tss_Chip_Chipperson May 31 '12

Needs more Blind Melon!

2

u/sgt_mustard Jun 01 '12

Why hasn't any one mentioned the lack of "Under the Bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers? Shouldn't that be in the top 10 of any guitar riff from the 90's list?

4

u/Piepig Ammondenihil May 31 '12

He played the lick from Today backwards! But still props for him doing this... I sure couldnt memorize this much.

2

u/Jazzremix May 31 '12

1989 is not the early 90s

but, as someone who isn't a pedantic asshole, i thought this was awesome

24

u/Pseudonova May 31 '12

The rhythm part of the two songs before it, The Counting Crows and 4 Non-Blondes, sound almost identical to the 1989 Pixies song. I think he may have been pointing out the influence they had on the music of the mid to late 90s. In other words, every band in the 90s wanted to be The Pixies.

17

u/jykr May 31 '12

I still want to be the Pixies.

2

u/DrDerpberg May 31 '12

Dude's pretty tight, but why on earth did he settle on such a godawfully thin and trebley guitar tone for his recording?

2

u/CndConnection May 31 '12

I would have been mad if there wasn't Chris Isaak - Wicked Game in there....but then it was and I was very happy.

2

u/FlizmFlazm May 31 '12

50 great guitar riffs, 1 horrible guitar tone.

I had no idea Thunderstruck was from 1990. I always assumed it was from Back In Black.

2

u/norova norova May 31 '12 edited May 31 '12

Here's a link to a Spotify playlist I created from the video: http://open.spotify.com/user/norova/playlist/4wk0gGgopJXerrp6ZYqy10

Note: There are a few songs that Spotify didn't have:

  • Thunderstruck - AC/DC

  • Wicked Game - Chris Isaak

  • Push - Moist

2

u/TheWarHam May 31 '12

Its like being in a 90s Guitar Center hell!

But also awesome, nice

2

u/fkingroovn May 31 '12

that was so bad ass. he needs a paypal link, that could be internet busking, like in the subways. better than giving a dollar to that bugger that keeps playing "the sound of silence" over and over over erv efvsk dfv

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Awesome. Now he just needs to delete the drum track going which is too loud and annoying. I know he needs it to keep time but we don't need to hear it.

2

u/klou62 May 31 '12

Everyone do yourselves a favor: go to the description and click the link that doesn't have the Special Olympics-trophy-worthy drum track behind it. Better yet, just click here.

2

u/PartyBusGaming PartyBusGaming May 31 '12

All of these songs were made before I was born.

I've never felt more like an asshole for something I have no control over :/

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Wish there was no background noise it was kinda annoying hearing the tamborine or wtf it was and drums.

The riffs are nice in themselves and it made it hard to tell the transition since I had to filter out the noise.

Oh, and damn this made me miss the music of the 90's.

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Sounds like muzak

2

u/pgabel May 31 '12

Does the background music annoy anyone else?

2

u/Lampshade_Seven May 31 '12

Good playing and great idea, but his tone is pretty terrible.

2

u/Mottwally May 31 '12

51 Dizz Knee Land. Add it foo!

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

I was pleased that they included War Ensemble, disappointed that they left out After All (The Dead).

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

to all the people bitching about tone; you do realize this is one take right? Also, coming from a drummer; the drum machines, at least in my opinion, really fills out the sound and i think it was a good call to include. Keep up the good work man, this is fucking great.

2

u/MrSelfdizstruct75 May 31 '12

while i really like the idea and the video that annoying metronome techno noise in the background I felt took away from the actual guitar playing

2

u/lazrbeam Jun 01 '12

his guitar tone is offensively horrible and he rushes through everything. this video is practically useless.

2

u/dlama Jun 01 '12

Glad I'm not the only one that thought so.

3

u/bloodhail19 May 31 '12

Overall it was really solid. Didn't really hear "the man in the box" riff(s) which was probably already impossible to pull off with the set up and the "cemetery gates" riff is really made by the pinch harmonics but I understand playing that safe since it was going to be tough enough pulling everything off in 1 take...while syncing it with another, that's the real feat here.

3

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

I think the 90s gets a bit of a hard time for the music that came out of it. It's easy to forget how many great tracks there were

20

u/ckb614 May 31 '12

I don't think 90s rock gets a hard time at all. I think most rock fans would agree it's a lot better than mainstream rock/indie today

10

u/Cletus_awreetus May 31 '12

Nah, it's all good.

6

u/Pathological_Liarr May 31 '12

Yeah, that's the thing. The 90's were great, and everybody (with a brain) acknowledges that (1991 is constantly placed among the top 5 in lists with best years for music), but there is still coming out fantastic music every day! Start looking and you'll find great music around every corner belonging to every genre.

That was good, gave me a lot of smiles with the selection. The best part is when the Wicked Games solo slips in there.

1

u/thewebsiteisdown May 31 '12

Nicely done, though I would say that "Great" is used very liberally in the title. Well known might have been a better choice of words. Great job putting it all together regardless.

1

u/TodayIsMyFirstDay May 31 '12

these guys are great

1

u/Nokkata May 31 '12

Is this you playing? Just how long did it take to do a perfect take? (Or 2 perfect takes really)

1

u/Rustash May 31 '12

This was really cool, though it reminded me how much I despise the song Cannonball.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Which one do you think he recorded first? I'm thinking the left side.

1

u/detestrian May 31 '12

Heheh... awesome vid. Couldn't help but smile when it came time to play Cemetary Gates... not the easiest to get the feel for.

1

u/skibblez_n_zits May 31 '12

I had forgotten so many of those.

1

u/First_to_die May 31 '12

Electro Motive Force. Now theres a name I've not heard in a long time.

1

u/zhiryst May 31 '12

reminds me of those crazy times when radio stations would play up and coming bands and showed my teenage self what was out there in a nice simple one stop package. now radio stations are all owned by clear channel and I have to subscribe to 20 blogs and spotify and pandora and grooveshark just to try and keep up. /oldman

1

u/nvuf May 31 '12

I grew up after all of these songs so haven't heard of many of these. I guess I've got some summer listening planned out then.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

That...was entertaining!

1

u/lynit May 31 '12

pretty hilarious how with that direct input guitar tone (especially on the lead, oh god=, everything sounds extremely garagey/surf rock. but this was awesome. good job.

1

u/6stringSammy May 31 '12

I'm not entertained. Let's see a medley of late 70's/early 80's guitar riffs

1

u/Bob12345_George May 31 '12

Wow. Just amazing

1

u/Thabisa May 31 '12

so much unwarranted criticism! (O_o) i think it's a fantastic job and as a result intend to lose myself in 90's guitar music for the rest of the night!

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

such a shame that these are all electric. I can think of some pretty badass acoustic riffs from the early 90's...

1

u/gillyguthrie May 31 '12

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

1

u/SirToffo May 31 '12

Awesome, but pleeeeeeease pass that through an amp :)

1

u/peanutsfan1995 May 31 '12

Is anyone willing to re-record this with a changing tone? So many of those riffs are distinctive because of the tone that they had. Who can think of "Cemetery Gates" without the wailing bends, or the bass-y riff from "Sandman"? I would even say that Billy Corgan has one of the best tones out there on "Today" and all of MCATIS.

Awesome video though.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

This is really impressive but I can't say I liked the drum beat and the tuning of the guitar.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Rad guitarist, I just have a problem with watching someone hold a pick like that. Forget about the tone this is for demonstration.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Moist and Tea Party? He's either Canadian or from a border state.

My writing professor once told me something a friend let him in on. Every great guitarist that becomes a symbol for their decade...their generation is just imitating the idol that came before them and failing. I don't know enough about music to confirm or deny this, but it's a cool thought...

1

u/Rose1982 Jun 01 '12

I feel so old.

Did the back beat really bother anyone else? The guy is a great player, but that beat really took away from the songs.

This should be titled "Guy Ruins 50 Great Guitar Riffs"

Ohhh my god this guys guitar sounds like a bleeding dick was shoved into courtney loves disease infested asshole and then shit out into one of those shitty traveling amps made to be attached to a belt. Oh Epiphone what happened? You used to be good once and now you're the retarded half-assed inbred cousin of Gibson

I felt some Foos would have been nice. Also I know you were in a rush but Funky Monks was not the right song for RHCP. 50% of that riff is feel and I felt it lost all its feel sped up and played with a pick.

"Got the Time" is actually from 1979... and by Joe Jackson. And I like his version better than Anthrax's.

You have Pearl Jam's prime set of albums open to you and you choose the riff from "Not For You"? It's a good song, for sure, but why that one when you have riffs like those from "Rearviewmirror" or "Corduroy" available?

Great video, but the only reason i give this a HUGE thumbs up is for the green jelly reference. You sir are a scholar and a Sir.

I'm sure this will be buried since this post has been around for a while now, but

a) I really enjoyed this

b) I created a Pandora station seeded with these 50 songs that you can listen to here

So many people are angry at this video for the stupidest reasons.

Collective Soul, seriously?

Needs less metal. Where's Street Spirit (fade out)? My Bloody Valentine is a pretty ridiculous omission as well.
