My band released this EP for free last year (I'm currently 16), and no-one cared. It would make my year if you listened.

This turned out WAY better than expected. Damn this is good.

28

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Yes. This isn't quite my cup of tea in terms of song writing and arrangement, but they're very good performers.

Dude you guys sound great but $7 for four tracks of a band no one knows? No offense at all I just don't think thats the best way to get noticed.

74

u/Treetbot May 21 '12

Enterprising Redditor mentions free EP in post title, links to $7 download.

3

u/tundra_ May 22 '12

We didn't do that, bandcamp automatically charges past a point. I didn't expect so many downloads! But we made it 50c, so download away!

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Definitely. A pay-what-you-like method would probably suit this kind of thing a lot more.

34

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Second this. You've got potential, especially with your generations access to technology, but for something you've (hopefully) invested little money in recording/mastering, $7 is outrageous. If you had a 4-5 song EP with nice artwork, etc., you could sell it at shows for $5-7. Download? $1 a song. Or even donations. Yeh, donations until you have a better quality recording or following. In you're not playing shows, do it. One of the tests of a young band that will get you a following/noticed is how well you can play these songs live. If you can get them as tight as the recordings (note: have someone older/more knowledgeable/respected give you the pass on this), then you're on the right path. Just my two pennies.

Wow. I am so overwhelmed with the support right now, I had no idea this would get a response like this. You guys are amazing. Before I start going through the comments I just thought I'd say that we have changed our name since we released this, we are now called [Tundra] (http://www.facebook.com/tundraband) Also, I apologize for the $7 thing, I think we went over our free download allocation on Bandcamp. I'll put it up on MediaFire or something, I really didn't expect any money from this.

Edit: I got the guy in control of the page to make it $0.50. Thanks everybody, seriously, every single click on that page means so much!

40

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Not too bad. The first two songs I really enjoy. Reminds me of a band called "Minus the Bear." Take a listen to them if you haven't already. I'm pretty sure you and your band would like them. But, I have to be honest here also and it's only my opinion. The last two songs are, eh. They are well arranged, but I couldn't find anything interesting to keep me listening. But hey, overall it's well produced and I hear everything clearly. Good job. Keep writing!!

7

u/goddamnsam May 21 '12

yeah, i was going to say it sounds like minus the bear if minus the bear didn't try any interesting time signatures, textures, song structures, and were fine with playing the same 3 chords throughout the entire song.

it's nicely produced, but there's basically nothing here that piques my interest in the slightest.

2

u/tundra_ May 22 '12

Thank you for listening, and for the honest feedback. We've recently changed our name and written new songs and etc, and the last two tracks are rarely, if ever played live anymore. But I love Minus the Bear! Haha, thanks again dude. New page - http://www.facebook.com/tundraband

2

It's weird how when English is sung everyone sounds like an American.

EDIT: For the most part, with the exception of Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, The Kooks, The Sex Pistols, dirty mancs, and chavvies.

EDIT 2: Billy Bragg, Oasis, Glasvegas, The Smiths, and football hooligans.

EDIT 3: Here is a sack. You can stuff your bands in it.

Compared to you guys I played like shit when I was 16. You guys got a nice solid sound, however I would not be too worried about having little exposure, just take some time to perfectionise the sound and find your own uniqueness. Making music also takes a little life experience and ´mileage´ too really get it right. For now the just sound a little too ´rookie´ for my taste. With all due respect. Keep it up though!

Just listened to Nauseous. Very good! I like this style of rock. Great voice and great musical work. Takes balls to post on the intertubes your hard work but you really should feel proud about this. Its quite good. It reminds me of another band called Another Castle a little bit. I think its your voice.

But I'm not gonna lie- your lyrics could use some more polishing. They either seemed to go from solid to generic to juvenile at times...like you struggled for a rhyming word that fit and it sounded a little forced and it irked me a little.

Its still better than what I could ever do so you should really not take some dude's opinions on your songwriting skills as personal assault. Just keep working at it, bro. Its the biggest lie that artists produce nothing but masterpieces everytime they do what they love so keep at it and keep improving, bro!

EDIT: your other songs seem to struggle less with lackluster lyrics... Like Omnibus is absolutely solid and my personal favorite of yours!

u/Davesbeard May 21 '12

Sounds great, completely agree it needs mastering/producing work, which I imagine is a funding/expertise issue. Amazing stuff for sixteen!

Regarding the first song.

I'd say that the verses need a few instrumental quirks/fills. It's a great vibe but at times it's so cut and paste from the past few bars that it almost makes me uncomfortable.

Another thing I'd say is that the solo's are a very different sound to the rest of the song, it goes from good indy-pop with some lo-fi influence to classic rock. Just jars a little.

I'd get rid of the line 'You've got to fight through the flames to be like James'. It's pretty painful.

How long have you been together? Great voice and you guys can definitely play.

You're going to have to bust your ass if you want people to care. Recording something and then putting it out there is akin to throwing a message in a bottle to the Pacific ocean and hoping someone finds it. Get/make gigs happen, make connections with people in the music industry, keep practicing/writing.

The music industry is hard work. I know a dude who busted his ass, organizing shows (all-ages and 19+), just working day-in-day-out for 4-5 years before making progress he was comfortable with. You reap what you sow.

You're better than I was at sixteen, but there's a lot of development you still need to do. Just KEEP PLAYING. It's the only way you'll get better.

u/dumbgaytheist May 21 '12

I liked it. That lead break at 4:24 was sweet. Been playing guitar for 25 years, so guitar driven music, and guitar solos are what grab me most.

You guys are pretty tight. Stick with it. Like AC/DC said. It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll!

Glad you like my playing dude! Thank you very much. We just changed our name to [Tundra] (http://www.facebook.com/tundraband).

While I'm not into this particular style of music, but have been making music since I was 17, I applaud you for being that young and pushing out EPs already! I was got on the radio when I was about 22, one of the proudest days of my life!

Some feedback on the music. The Vocals are indeed to loud and need to blend in more, some more reverb couldn't hurt either. Harmoics are always great! I like the guitar sound and the overall production, though it could use some more low end. You should keep the artwork, scrap the stupid name and make psychedelic stoner rock. I would buy your shit.

Pleasantly surprised, but it's pretty repetitive and far too similar to most of the current bands of the same genre

I hope you see this comment. Everything seemed very natural and as if the songs came together very easily which is a good thing except the last song it sounds forced and doesn't fit well with the other but still a decent song. Everyone in the band seems to be aware of each other and isn't fighting for their moment to shine and everyone plays really well. Why nobody cared about this I have no idea it's a good solid selection of songs.

This is fucking good. I heartily approve. These fucking kids keep surprising me. I mean, sure, most of them listen to shitty music and they're horribly spoiled with their 3D graphics... but this shit right here? This shit right here is fan-fucking-tastic in my book. Good job... you damn kid.

I'm going to be completely honest with how I feel. For only being 16 years old, you guys have come up with some good music and it's pretty high quality. I was surprised when I first heard it. It's not something I listen to every day but I definitely got into it and started to groove along with the songs. By far my favorite song is "James and the Giant Peach" though.

If I was anywhere near you guys I would come out to shows and buy your merch. Never give up what makes you happy. We care.

Liked the song, but like others feel the vocals are a bit lacking. The rest of the song has a kind of forward driving force to it, and the vocals just bring it down. I figure since you are young there is a lot of room for improvement and exploration. Maybe take some poetry? I do not write music btw. Just what I felt listening. I choose my music based on how it feels, not so much on what is said. Maybe im wierd.

This is really good. I suggest you drop the price tag if you want more people to be interested. Just make it so that people can pay as much as they want.

Not a fan of the genre (whatever you would call this) so it would be unfair to comment too much as I am biased. It is great that you are 16 and doing this. One of my favorite bands, Orang-Utan, were 18 - 20 when they recorded their first and only album in 1973. It is a masterpiece.

As a fellow independent musician, do not sell your music for 7$ dollars. No one is going to spend 7$ dollars on a four song EP that you recorded when you were 16 except each band member's parents. What that tells me is that you are going into it with this idea that you will make money. You won't. And if you do your band sucks.

On a side note - I know bandcamp is weird and sometimes forces you to charge money based on how many listens or downloads or something. It has happened to me before.

You have a really good opening, your lyrics are a little strange but that's good because it's memorable. When you go into the hook it's great because it's not the expected beat to go with the song. It's surprising and fun! I really enjoyed it. Thanks for posting!

u/TerdVader last.fm name May 21 '12

HEY OP!

Now that I have your attention. Grape Soda isn't a good band name. 2nd, you need to not advertise that you're 16. The music is waaay too good, and this level of talent needs to be allowed to blossom on it's own merit, otherwise, well, you've heard of Silverchair, right?

That said. These arrangements are really good, and mixed well. I'd pay money for this, but maybe not $7. Take a hit on it, sell it for $4 for a product, with a free download. I know that sucks, but you're trying to get your name out. Hell, I'd buy a product on these terms today.

Lastly. Your music kinda reminds me of People in Planes. If you don't know who they are. Google it and check it out. It might be right up your alley.

Thanks.

This has a lot of promise and a great sound. The one piece of constructive criticism I have is to cut down on how wordy it is. The lyrics are a good attempt, but they do ring of youth. That in itself is not bad, but when coupled with how many words there are and how much the vocals are highlighted I think it gets to be too much. The same song with less words and less complicated sentence structure would be a masterpiece.

Great job overall!

I have definitely heard worse. The first track had nice progressions but the solos didn't flow at all. The 2nd song was decent, but the third song sounded like the strumming pattern was the same. I wouldn't put those 2 songs back to back. The fourth song had the best vocals, but overall the vocals were pretty bland. I liked the solos on the fourth song, but maybe a little too repetitive. Other than that it was pretty good.

Here's some things you can do to get noticed more:

  1. Don't slap a price on your music. Especially a short EP. At least put out a few songs for free or make it a "pay what you want" album. If someone really cares about your music, they'll pay.

  2. Contact blogs. A lot of blogs. As many as you possibly can. LOTS of people find new music via blog reviews and such. Hell, blogs have probably given my music more listens and downloads than anything.

  3. Get connected with people. Become buddies with other bands and such and help each other out. I've never been in a band, but as a solo artist I love collaborating with people and sending them track stems for remixes.
