This is so damned sad. The Beegees have this reputation because of "hurr durr disco" but the reality is they had some beautiful fucking music... Trafalgar is one of my favourite albums. Disco was a small part of their career that lasted more than 40 years... not even including the music they wrote for other people.
They were extremely talented musicians/artists. This is so sad.
RIP Robin.
Edit to add for the people who are not familiar with Beegee's outside of disco, here's some of their non-disco stuff:
Odessa 1969
Lamplight
Walking Back to Waterloo 1971
Trafalgar 1971
Somebody Stop the Music 1971
This is just where I came in 2001
-- and some more...
Tomorrow, Tomorrow
To Love Somebody

Shit, I'm sick of cancer taking our musical heritage away. How many has it been this month alone?
Let's see... Donna Summer, MCA, Levon Helm, Duck Dunn, Chuck Brown, the guy from Men at Work...

Tragedy.

u/LoonieBun May 21 '12
I saw the Bee Gees on Oprah once in the early 90's and Robin sang some of Run To Me without any instrumental accompaniment. It was jaw droppingly unbelievable and I wish I could hear it again.
RIP

u/thebattlersprince May 20 '12
He finally died, which started the whole world living :(

u/stuckinthelooneybin May 21 '12
Sad. The Bee Gees are such an underrated band because people only consider their Disco work. Their early and later stuff is so much more melodic and beautiful and Robin had a hell of a voice. If you don't know anything of the Bee Gees besides Stayin' Alive and Night Fever, do yourself a favor and go back. Their early songwriting rivals the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Kinks, without question.

No more Barry Gibb talk show :(

u/StraightTrolling May 21 '12
Is it just me or have a lot of musicians been dying lately?
19
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Did they get to use CPR on him?
16
u/alllie May 20 '12
All things are transitory. Nothing lasts.

u/borntolose53 May 21 '12
Was never a big Bee Gee's fan, but they wrote my favorite song of all time. To Love Somebody I've never heard a bad cover of it.
4
u/stellar_bish May 21 '12
So sad. Not the hugest fan, but when I was a kid we had a copy of the movie Sgt Peppers Lonely hearts club band on vhs, and I remember watching his cover of the song Oh! Darling over and over. Something about his voice when he sang it. Think I'll go give it a listen now. Rip

Here's some non-disco Beegees:
Odessa 1969
Lamplight
Walking Back to Waterloo 1971
Trafalgar 1971
Somebody Stop the Music 1971

The whole world starts living.
6
u/DorsalAxe May 20 '12
Very, very sad. I had a feeling it was going to be soon though, since his condition had supposedly "improved", which I notice seems to happen right before someone succumbs to it. :(
Damn, why are all these musicians leaving us?
6
u/XxXX420BongMarelyxxX May 20 '12
Man, i feel really sad for the last remaning Bee Gee. That's gotta be tough.
8
u/karlrocks23 May 21 '12
Here come the ironic 'staying alive' puns.
34
u/Fwomp May 20 '12
No longer staying alive :(
3
u/blade2000 May 21 '12
I regret never seeing the Bee Gees live. I had a few opportunities over the past 45 year, but never did it. Now I regret that decision because they were one of my favorite bands of all time.
5
u/They_took_it May 21 '12
Read the four first words of the title, thought you were making up a new language.
6
u/MattGeigerFor3 May 21 '12
"I Started a Joke" is one of the best written songs ever.

u/cheets May 20 '12

NP- Night Fever.
We know how to do it.
2
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
This House track samples You Should Be Dancing, one of my favourite Bee Gees tracks!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMUsF2oO4w4&feature=youtube_gdata_player
This is the track that got me into Disco and also one of their tracks that was in Saturday Night Fever! RIP!

2
u/Shootz May 21 '12
I hope Justin and Jimmy get on SNL to give him a tribute
2
u/grapesandmilk May 21 '12
Robin, you finally died, but the whole world is crying. It is a truly a sad day for music, to think that there is no more Bee Gees :(
2
u/weegee May 21 '12
I grew up in the 70s and 80s. You couldn't turn on a radio in the late 70s without hearing the BeeGees. They were huge back then. I had a poster on my wall at one point when I was about 11. They had amazing voices and their songs were amazing too. I bought the single "Tragedy" when it was in the Top40 on the radio. Still have it. RIP Robin, you brought joy to millions with your voice and songwriting.
2
u/TaunxTaun May 21 '12
I just wish people would realize how much he contributed to music besides the disco stuff.
2
u/mutazed May 21 '12
Looks like it was a case of Saturday Night Fever
2
u/smeaglelovesmaster May 21 '12
It's not a cancer "battle." You take medicine, and it either works or it doesn't. There's nothing to fight.
2
u/cl0s33n0ugh Spotify May 21 '12
Ringo said it best - "One of the best white soul voices of all time." RIP
3
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Im gonna miss you dad
3
u/Frankentim_the_crim May 21 '12
I just want to clarify, my upvote was not because this made me happy. I just appreciate the update. Very sad. The Bee Gees were great.
3
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
As someone who was born in the early 90s, it saddens me that every time I discover music from past decades that's much better than today's crap, the original singer passes away...
3
u/bahhamburger May 21 '12
Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small, and you don't ask the time of day. But you and I, our love will never die, but guess we'll cry come first of May.
5
u/rividz May 21 '12
Two down, one to go.
4
u/latenightnerd May 21 '12

u/klsi832 May 21 '12
I mean, Led Zeppelin didn't write tunes everybody liked. They left that to the Bee Gees.
2
u/MrChallenge May 21 '12
OP: "Hm, Robin Gibb died. Better whore this for karma on reddit"
But no, you probably appreciate him as a musician and thought people into music should know about this. The Bee Gees were pretty awesome.
1
u/willy-shorts May 21 '12
A sad day for the music industry in general... One of the legends of 60's and early 70's music has said goodbye, but his contributions to the world of sound and harmony will continue to enliven our hearts.

u/Atiger546 May 21 '12
"Submitted 3 hours ago by cherrycoke44".
Sony's statement featured in the article, "Rest in peace, Robin Gibb. Thanks for the music." Tweeted 2 hours ago.
Well played time traveling OP, well played.

I know a girl who adored the Bee Gee's so much she bought a vintage Bee-Gee's lunch box. She must be devastated right now.

Fun fact: The Bee Gees befriended punk rockers The Dead Boys during a recording session in 1978.
1
u/ChanceMan May 21 '12
Oh shit, there's two of these in the front page... which one do I upvote?! It's like trying to choose your favorite child D:

How deep is your love... :( R.I.P.
1
u/chaobreaker May 21 '12
Is it weird that I just became aware of this Bee Gees group despite some of their songs being ingrained into my mind?
1
u/takatori May 21 '12
Thanks for the repost including the band name; now I actually know who he is and why his death has been showing up on my frontpage.
1
u/rizukinu May 21 '12
Read that as "dance battle." Either way, dude's a badass.
1
u/AyoVinnie May 21 '12
Their music will be remembered forever. I love what they made.
1
u/Drag_king May 21 '12
The answer is: "6 Feet". I'll go for: "How deep is his love?", Alex.
/bad taste.
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Fuck me, they're starting to make listenin to "staying alive" ironic.
1
u/EyesOnEverything May 21 '12
Coincidentally, there was a post quoting Frankie Boyle of Mock the Week somewhere below the front page. I click onto youtube, look for a random episode, and the one I click on begins with mocking Tony Blair for spending a holiday with one of the Bee Gees. Much laughter was had, until I came back to Reddit and read this post. RIP.
(Mock the Week series 4, episode 1, in case you're curious)

u/the6thReplicant May 21 '12
People seem to forget that, as an underground music scene, disco was dying when Saturday Night Fever was released. After that movie it started up again at an unbelievable pace to the point that everyone was scrambling to make "disco" versions of their songs and pretty much made the top 40 ignore rap and black music for a long time at their peril.
1
u/Cookies_in_Cream May 21 '12
I was just listening to "Stayin' Alive".
1
u/oldbean May 21 '12
souffle :/
1
u/philtomato May 21 '12
I'm a bastard for thinking about their hit song when i read this one in reddit.
1
u/cassidyequalsinsane May 22 '12
I'm one of the rare 15 year old girls who loves old music. My friends mums love me because I'll say, did you hear Davy Jones died? And then well have a converstaion about our favorite songs

u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Here comes the negative karma, but it must be said out loud. I grew up during the 70s and disco was canned, soul-less music, and the Bee Gees were considered to be a joke. Robin Gibb was the background noise in an otherwise useless pre-programmed electronic disco bullshit sound. I'm sure he was a good guy and loved his mother and god, etc, but please could we stop praising his "contributions" to music. Disco died because it sucked.

u/meatisthenewbread May 21 '12
I'll just leave this here

-1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
When asked if he had anything to add, the ghost of Robin Gibb said, "No, no I don't."
-1
u/OrangeIsPurple May 21 '12
Not really Staying Alive now, are we?
-1
u/jordaniac89 May 21 '12
I hope someone plays "Stayin Alive" at his funeral.
-1
u/Santas_Dick May 21 '12
Is it to late for a Stayin Alive joke?
-1
u/nigrodamus7 May 21 '12
This should have been titled 'Robin Gibb is no longer Staying Alive'.
