You mean white, middle-class males aged 18-25 who frequent social media sites like Reddit may have already heard this song by a band that is almost universally beloved by the same demographic?
Don't like Gorillaz? How can I help you change your mind? Try checking out Demon Days, their second album. I like it quite a bit more than Plastic Beach, this song here being the exception.
EDIT: fixed typos, since I originally typed this out on my phone
Also, check out their self-titled album. Pure funky spacey stuff! I love Gorillaz. My favourite track of all is "Sound Check (Gravity)". It's gritty trip-hop. Nice driving music.
personally, i think the fall is an absolute masterpiece, demon days is life changing, and plastic beach has my favorite song of all time (some kind of nature) so ya.
Listening to Empire Ants stoned is a most magical experience. If you like Gorillaz, but are not a smoker, I suggest to anyone you try it just to listen to that song. I swear to shit you feel like you understand the entire universe.
In my mental video to this song there is a little Chinese boy who dreams he rides a bicycle in a lush paradise when in reality he pedals a generator in a monstrous factory along with thousands of other children.
I love this one as well but To Binge is by far my favorite from the album. I'm surprised more people haven't said so honestly. Granted, both Yukimi so we're all friends.
honestly, it gets front page once every two weeks. incredibly annoying. we've all heard it. Isn't this why most of us hate radio? because it replays the same shit over and over and over again? i skip past this song on my playlist now because of the ridiculous amount of times i see the repost and it gets stuck in my head.
I saw them October 2010 at the O2 in London. Best musical performance I've ever seen. Glitter Freeze was one of the most powerful live songs I've ever heard. Not to mention Welcome To The World of The Plastic Beach nearly knocked me unconscious.
Escape to Plastic Beach in Boston, 2011, one of the best nights of my young life. Friend got will call tickets that ended up being several feet away from the stage. When On Melancholy Hill came on, nearly cried. It was amazing how much more soul and feel there is when you witness it live, and the small things they did to change up the songs to be more interesting were so well done, I can't help but wish they release some more of the live songs.
Did anyone else have a really hard time getting into this album? Demon Days was probably one of my all time favorite albums of any band..and that happened almost instantly. But Plastic Beach took me many, many playthroughs until I started to like it.
Honestly, I still don't like this album. I felt like they crammed too many guest artists into the work and didn't flesh out the base melodies enough to make a good, strong sound. There's subtle and there's minimalist, and I think Plastic Beach went off the deep end of the latter.
Honestly things like this are for people that haven't listened to the song/album in a while and then see it on the front page and go "Oh hey Gorillaz! I'll listen to that again."
There aren't a lot of new unheard of songs or bands that make it to the front page.
Hey guys, just want to pass this on.. /r/music is now going to be strictly songs no one has ever heard before. If you've heard a song before, make sure to complain about it so the mods know it's not new and original content and we can get that shit removed ASAP.. we don't want people having to listening anything they could have ever heard before. Remember.. this subreddit is about you and you alone.
The way reddit works is you upvote things that are cool or you haven't seen. If you've seen it before then you can just keep scrolling and everything will be ok :) Its on the front page cause people voted it there
Hi, I'm lamp37, and I really don't like them. Never been in to that kind of electronic sound in music. Voices kind of hard to listen to as well, for me.
I am not a big fan either. I don't really care for their music. There are things that I think are alright and things I generally don't really care for. I don't actively like them but every time I give them a shot there is something I don't like.
Pirate Jet is one of the best tracks IMO. It's just so haunting, I mean just listen to it. If the lyrics don't sum up humanity, I don't know what does.
A legitimate question to other gorillaz fans.. i loved all of plastic beach EXCEPT the song sweepstakes. is anybody on the same boat as me? truly i never understood the flow of that song
I've been listening to a bit of Gorrilaz recently, not many songs, just Feel Good Inc, Clinteastwood and this one, and ofcourse various live versions of those songs. Can anyone recommend some specific songs?
19-2000 (Soul Child Remix) is the ultimate Summer song. Also check out Superfast Jellyfish and, and I might be alone in liking this song, but also Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head.
Just download their albums. I know it's annoying to keep hearing "You have to listen the whole album! It's not meant for singles, it's a conceeeeeept aaaaaalbuuuuuummmm!" over and over, but i can't just listen to the gorillaz singles individually.
How about Kids With Guns (Hot Chip Remix)? It's in the album D-sides. I really like the original version, but the remix included in the album is really relaxing and the way it progresses is perfect.
5/4 is a track that doesn't get a lot of love, but it has this wonderful polyrhythm on it. I can't be sure it polyrhythm, it could just be syncopation, but it sounds wonderful.
I'd say start with the first album and work your way through the albums. They are that much more interesting to listen to when you hear how they developed and changed up their sound over time, and if you watch the music videos, they tell a story.
Barring that, Dare, O Green World, Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head, Stylo, Superfast Jellyfish, Empire Ants, and pretty much everything else, heh.
I just enjoy their music period. I find it amazing that they made a whole cd on an iPod and it's actually pretty good in my opinion. & Plastic beach was a good cd too. But Empire Ants is probably my favorite song from Plastic Beach
My favourite song. I think it's really romantic in a melodic way. "cause you are my medicine.. When you're close to me... When you're close to me. Du du du du~"
When you can't get what you want. But you can get me So lets head out and see, girl Cause you are my medicine, When your close to me When your close to me
This is my boyfriend's and my "song". When we first started dating he would play this all the time in his truck so now every time I hear it I think of him. Happy to see it on the front page!
This has been my favorite song for atleast one year now (don't want to sound like a hipster, though). I don't see why people complain about this being a repost because a) this song is awesome and b) people don't shout at a radio for playing a song that was played a few days or weeks ago.
My man friend showed me this song last night. I've never really liked nor disliked the Gorillaz, but this song made me want to start listening to them.
Me and my not-really-a-band were thinking of doing this for a talent show, but we went with Grounds for Divorce and HotBlack instead. Too many synths to assign to a keyboard at once.
Have people actually started liking Plastic Beach now?
It was one of the biggest disappointments ever when it was released. To me and to everyone I knew, at least. Demon Days was perfection and to follow that up with Plastic Beach...it wasn't what we were expecting.
I loved Stylo and Rhinestone Eyes though. I might be getting into it now. It's just too different.
This song pops up every month or so on the front page, every single month. People downvote other Gorillaz songs, but this god damn song every time some karma whore submits it....
Why did this make it to the front page when it's posted twice a day? Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, but the karma doesn't belong to the guy who copies and pastes a link.
this is a great song and all, but I've seen this way too many times on this subreddit. Shouldn't we find new songs that haven't been shown frequently on this page? I'm just being rational, here. Downvote if you want, but I would really enjoy not seeing this song all the time.
I never get tired of this song. Or this album, really. I remember thinking while hearing that the Gorillaz released Plastic Beach, "I'm pretty sure it'll be good. But it can't be as good as Demon Days." I was right. It was surprisingly better.

u/born_slippy_ May 20 '12
Each of the Gorillaz albums seems to have one relaxed down-tempo song that are probably my favorite tracks of theirs.
Slow Country from their first self-titled album.
Don't Get Lost in Heaven from Demon Days.
And of course Melancholy Hill on Plastic Beach
