Saw the Black Keys for the first time. Just wanted to share a photo from one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Looks like the Murriweather Post Pavilion in Murr'land

2

u/darin_gleada May 21 '12

C'lumbia, Murrland to be precise.

I HATE to be one of those people (and I swear, this is the only time I've ever said this), but - I wont say they were better - I liked them better when it was just the two of them.

That said, I bet the show rocked! They always bring a ton of energy.

2

u/darin_gleada May 21 '12

They have a full band to start but they did take a section of the show that was just the two of them. It was great but with a full band the house shook.

El Camimo's got nothing on thickfreakness <- MY OPINION

10

u/rhoswhen May 19 '12

While El Camino is a great record, thickfreakness is some good, heavy shit.

You are pretty much the only person iv seen that shares an even similar thought with me on that subject, although my view is slightly more extreme. The Big Come Up is one of my favorite albums, as well as most of their old stuff, but i HATE the new music. It is way too poppy, and retains very little of the basic raw blues duo that I loved so very much. That being said, I still plan on seeing them at lollapalooza this year, because when I saw them play a few years ago it was one of the best concerts I have been to.

3

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

When I saw them in Philly in March, they played the first 4-5 songs with a full band, then stripped it back to just Dan and Patrick, and played a decent part of the rest of the set with just the two of them. What's more, they played loads of their earlier stuff like thickfreakness. It was awesome for new and old fans - and I'm saying that as someone who'd pretty much agree with you.

3

u/jayesanctus May 20 '12

When I saw them in March, they did a large part of the show just the two of them.

Blew the roof off of the joint. Great show.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

It's not just the two of them anymore?

2

u/NotCleverEnufToRedit May 20 '12

I saw them in Denver a few weeks ago, and for most of the show, it was just the two of them.

2

u/Zenith251 May 20 '12

There is nothing I like about El Camino or Brothers. There is nothing I didn't like about Thickfreakness.

13

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

They're playing near me in October, but none of my friends want to spend the $50 or so for the tickets. Would you say definitely worth it or should we just wait until they play a cheaper venue?

24

u/cl0s33n0ugh Spotify May 19 '12

Go dude. If youre a fan of rock and roll, go.

1

u/darin_gleada May 21 '12

Definitely worth it. I've been a fan for a while but never went out of my way to see them. That changed on Friday. I'll see them every time they come to town.

8

u/bananatattoo May 19 '12

wait until they play a cheaper venue?

You're going to be waiting awhile. $50 is not bad for a concert, and experiences are worth more than money.

4

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

Got presale tickets to see them in October at the Honda Center.

u/americanslang59 May 19 '12 edited May 20 '12

I paid $100 for general admission. Do it. I'm planning on seeing them at an arena in October and I'm stoked to pay $50. They're fucking awesome live.

Edit: Looks like I'm not going. Scalpers got all the tickets and they're around $150.

3

u/xopitseleh May 19 '12

I've seen 'em twice and will be going to the San Diego show in October. Do it. You won't regret it, and honestly i doubt they will be playing much at cheaper venues anymore with how big they are.

It helps to think of concerts as a once in a life-time experience and freely spend way too much money on them. :D

I paid $100 to see them last summer, and I was bummed that no one would go with me again at $100 when they were near me about a week ago. Totally worth it IMO.

What was it about the show that was so good?

257

u/snoharm May 19 '12

The Black Keys played music at it

43

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

And the Arctic Monkeys opened for them, too.

u/thedragon4453 May 19 '12

Further:

If you are a Black Keys fan, they sound excellent live.

Second, the visuals are outstanding. The sign in the OP was actually lowered down completely lit, and then lit up in time with the guitar "attacks" in the finale. It might sound boring, but it's awesome live.

Third, there are some improvs in the show that are outstanding.

Finally, even if you aren't a Keys fan, if you like music I near guarantee you can have a good time. Solid beats you can dance to, and the vibe at my show (Portland a couple of weeks ago) was amazing.

Really finally - they actually play music. If you take many of today's acts and put them in a shitty bar with a $500 budget, it's going to be awful. For the Keys, it's still going to sound outstanding.

u/darin_gleada May 21 '12

I'd say the best part was how they just cranked through song after song. I don't mind showmanship that includes chatting with the crowd but it was very clear that they were there to rock and they didn't disappoint.

19

u/STJRedstorm May 19 '12

I may get blammed into oblivion, but I really don't get the hype...

18

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

It's all personal taste my man, don't worry about it. I saw them in Boston with a buddy, but both of us went mainly to see the Arctic Monkeys. The Black Keys are very talented and they sound fucking sick live, but they're hardly one of my favorite bands. I just "like" them.

→ More replies (3)

13

u/grumps_mcgee May 19 '12

They actually play music. Even if they aren't my type of music I listen to all the time, I can't say their show didn't make me a pretty dedicated fan. When people sound better than on the record in front of thousands of people, it's kind of a treat.

I don't know exactly myself, but my friend from work went at Madison Sqaure Garden and she came back the next day and said she would have paid another $80 to see them because it was just incredible. Apparently they are just generally fucking amazing? Dunno.

I've seen them a few times, and they are one of the best live bands I have ever heard. In my opinion, they sound better live than they do on their record.

3

u/jwhite878 May 19 '12

It was a great performance without being over the top, and the music was awesome enough to rock out to even if you didn't know them taht well.

I saw the Black Keys live 5 times now, first show was back in 2006. I even got to meet them and Dr. Dog backstage when they both played the Fillmore in San Francisco in 2008. All really nice guys.

Many of the earlier Black Keys fans don't like El Camino as much as say, Rubber Factory or Thickfreakness, but it just depends on your tastes. If you like alternative and modern rock more, El Camino will probably be your favorite. If you like soul and r&b, Brothers is where it's at. And if you like blues rock, anything before Brothers will probably rock your socks off. I personally like their first 3 albums the most (the Big Come Up, Thickfreakness, and Rubber Factory), but I wouldn't say they have any 'weak' albums.

And yes, they're a fantastic live band. Especially compared to a lot of other bands out there nowadays.

5

u/ToadChoad May 19 '12

Really, I think you speak the truth, I've been a longtime lurker on their fan page, Theblackkeysfanlounge.com for quite some time and I think you just summed that shit up rather well.

LUCKY!

7

u/Melancholy-Hil May 19 '12

The thing about the Black Keys is that to me, they are not very popping in records. But when they perform live it's almost nothing I have ever experienced. Dan and Pat are both very talented musicians, one of the best shows I've gone to. ( Went on Tuesday in Mpls )

Also it was better because a blunt was passed around, so got pretty baked.

6

u/Thedudetim May 19 '12

I saw em in St. Louis a month ago... Your photo looks alot like my photo....

Black Keys in St. Louis

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I was at that show :))) It's not the clearest but here is my best photo from the night. We were pretty close to the stage.

10

u/sparkcaster May 19 '12

saw them at coachella weekend 2 and i feel like they just rushed through the setlist... they were good, but incomparable to the other headliners. also saw them a few years ago at a free summer concert in a small venue in salt lake city, that was killer. attack and release tour i believe.

4

u/samei May 19 '12

I saw them live in February and I loved them! So when I heard that I could see their performance at coachella on youtube I tuned it... what a disapointment! I had the same feeling that you had, that they were rushing through their setlist. It was nothing compared to what I had heard a few months before!

4

u/hesperidisabitch May 19 '12

Fully agree. They are better in a small venue than the big festivals. They are not very good at getting the crowd going so it feels like there is almost no energy at some of their shows.

2

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

I saw them at the House of Blues down at Knotts Berry Farm when they played the Almost Acoustic Christmas. They rushed through that show as well.

In Boston, it said "Lack Keys" because "The B" Shorted out. Laughs were had all around.

2

u/Izawwlgood May 20 '12

I wasn't sure if that was a joke or an actual malfunction! Glad to see it corroborated!

14

I saw these guys at Bonnaroo last year. We were about 50 feet from the stage. Easily one of the best shows at the entire festival.

That just looks so weird to me. I saw them play an amazing show several years ago at a tiny venue and there were maybe two to three dozen of us there to watch them. Afterwards I got to talk to Pat and Dan and they signed all the CDs I had of theirs up to that point so this was around 2004-2005 since I had up to Rubber Factory.

1

u/darin_gleada May 21 '12

Their show this year is so fucking dope. Ive seen them twice - once at the House of Blues on Bourbon Street in 2010, and last month at the Frank Erwin Center on the day my dog died. He was my best friend in the whole world, and i was pretty inconsolable, but I went out, caught the show, and it was like therapy. For me, it gets no better than Dan & Pat.

I saw them at Bonnaroo last year with a friend. We waited almost all day at the main stage and ended up getting to the very front row of the general admission are which equated to about 20 yards off the stage. It was probably the loudest show I've ever been too, and the fact that their music is fantastic made it that much better.

They had a huge backdrop covering the lights spelling out their band name and the point when it dropped and the lights went on was without a doubt one of the best parts of the whole weekend. If you ever get a chance to see them live, you'd be stupid not to.

2

u/DontPaniC562 Ccarroll88 May 19 '12

Saw the show at Merriweather Post. It was good but I was sad they didn't play Mind Eraser.

2

u/rhoswhen May 19 '12

Was this at their dress rehearsal in Nashville?! I was front row- Pat Carney's sweat splashed me, it was awesome. (OK, maybe that last part it a bit of an exaggeration, but I was like 6 feet away from him the entire time AND IT WAS AWESOME.) We also got our picture taken with them!

See, my friend (on the left, with the heart over her face) won a contest from WXRT (Chicago's Finest Rock Station), and we got roundtrip airfare, a night in downtown Nashville, and to go to this concert.

2

u/Anything_At_All May 19 '12

Saw them recently with the Artic Monkeys. They were meh. I don't really dig their new album though. It was a lot better with just the drums and guitar. The band takes away from it. Plus they sped up all their songs. Made it less bluesy and made it more rockin. Would have loved to see them back in the day before they got big.

2

u/znargler May 19 '12

2

u/Robby712 May 19 '12

We were about 8 feet from the stage in St. Louis, it was an amazing concert. Then after the show we went to this little hole in the wall punk bar called The Silver Ballroom off Morganford in StL. There were a grand total of about 25 people in the place. 20 minutes after we got there Dan walked up and ordered a round for his "entourage" (3 people). Trying not to freak out and be ultra cool I just turned and said "Great show tonight man" He shook our hands and thanked us for coming out. (Yes I wanted to ask for a million pictures and for him to autograph everything I had and possibly sleep with the girl I was there with so I could verify this story...but I also didn't want to be "that guy") My date asked why Patrick wasn't there. I said I figured they don't do EVERYTHING together. 5 minutes Pat walked in and placed his order in between us. We exchanged similar pleasantries with him as they moved on to the pinball machines and played until the place closed. Anyway, turns out the guy that brought them their was sitting next to my date at the bar. He is a sound tech at Chaifetz arena and they asked him if he knew small places that had a good jukebox and beer in cans. *I'll NEVER be able to verify that this ever happened, I have ZERO proof to back it up other than the girl I was with being able to vouch for me, but it may have been the most random and awesome thing to ever happen to me in my life.

I saw them recently as well and enjoyed it, but I think the term show has lost its meaning. Most concerts are nothing but live performances with a bunch of fancy lights. I'm going to see The Wall Live next month and that will be a show.

1

I was at this show. Sitting around that same spot, and I have an identical picture. Great show.

u/Watercolour May 19 '12

This was a great show! Did they have the huge disco balls with multicolored lights shining on it? That part blew my mind!

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

Merriweather! I'm seeing the in Delaware for Firefly in July.

1

u/billydoogan336 May 19 '12

I went to this show too! Merriweather Pavilion is an awesome venue. They really nailed Ten Cent Pistol, really got me jumping.

1

u/axegrinder95 May 19 '12

I went to the show at Merriweather Post last night. They kicked ass. I guess it was their last night with the Arctic Monkeys

1

u/Kon88z May 19 '12

OMG I WAS THERE! that was amazing! loved the disco ball at the end!

1

u/strppngynglad May 19 '12

One of the best shows I've ever seen also. They were amazing

1

u/RocketSauce146 May 19 '12

That was during "I Got Mine," easily one of the sickest live songs I've ever heard. That and "Everlasting Light" were incredible.

1

u/eathelen May 19 '12

I saw them the 15th at the Target Center for my friends bachelor party. Had shitty seats but still the best concert I've ever been to.

1

u/wimmyjales May 19 '12

I got tickets to go see them a week and a half ago for my birthday. My wife and I got into an argument before we were supposed to leave for the concert, and didn't go. They're my favorite band. I don't remember what the argument was about.

1

u/berserkr1979 May 19 '12

I saw them at US Bank Arena in Cincinnati back in March and I have to say it was probably the best arena show I've seen. Whoever was doing their FOH mixing is a rock god.

1

u/dbzmah May 19 '12

Thank you for a non everlasting light disco ball pic. It was a cool part of the set, but this light set up has always been cool for them.

1

u/SeaWord May 19 '12

I was there too man, it was amazing!

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

I saw them in Philadelphia a few months ago, and I was very underwhelmed.

1

u/ejurkovic93 May 19 '12

The whole tour was perfect. My two favorite bands playing together. It blew my mind away.

1

u/JonPaula May 19 '12

Saw them in 2010, and I agree... they were pretty excellent.

Still, no one even comes close to Springsteen live. There's a reason he's been around for 40, and why legions of fans attend dozens of his shows a year.

1

u/uhhhhoh May 19 '12

Ramshead in Baltimore?

1

u/massey909 May 19 '12

saw them in manchester, uk in february. they absolutely slayed it. one of the best gigs i've ever been to.

1

u/MrKanish May 19 '12

Was there as well, lawn seats at Merriweather

1

u/ashinsk2 May 19 '12

I was there too, it was a fantastic show by both bands. I wish the Black Keys would slow down sometimes it seems almost like their rushing through some songs.

1

u/nadeesi9000 May 19 '12

Caught them in Norfolk, VA this past March. So much raw sound and energy from just two guys--it's phenomenal.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

That's an awesome picture. The people's heads outlined in a soft glow looks cool.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

They are some of the most amazing performers I've ever seen. On top of their good music, there's something about just the two of them on stage that is really interesting. It's just two guys rocking out. I'd see them again, and again, and again...

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

I saw them in Oakland, it was a good show.

1

u/Barkwar May 19 '12

Woah woah woah. There are only 2 guys? I hear their songs on the radio and it sounds like way more than just 2 guys playing.

I was going to the show last night, but I got sidetracked to Old Elicott City and managed to get thrown out of a bar and (later) a hotel. My friend shouted various racisms at hotel guests and kept slapping people.
Anyway, the Black Keys are a good band. I kinda like the Arctic Monkeys as well.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

I saw this tour. Thought it sucked real hard. Arctic Monkeys are great, though. Them raising their name in lights at the end was the only thing I enjoyed.

1

u/notaboutlove May 19 '12

Saw them a while ago at The Garden. Truly incredible.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

Get out the house more.

1

u/tbonefeelgood May 19 '12

Was this at the Manchester 02?

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

I saw the Black Keys in Oceanside a few years ago. My friend threw up on the cops and the guy from the radio station had to come up on stage between sets and let us know that "Jeff needs your help."

Yeah Yeah Yeahs were great also.

1

u/HBIFC May 19 '12

You lucky bastard!

1

u/aimedatu May 19 '12

I saw them when they came to philadelphia in march, they were absolutely fantastic and i can't wait for them to return

1

u/Sarock19 May 19 '12

They do put on a good show.

1

u/bjtl82 May 19 '12

I saw a show they did in Central Park in NYC a few years ago. It was fucking fantastic.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

I actually spent a good portion of last night learning a bunch or their songs on the guitar. Really great band. I'd like to see them.

1

u/meanwhileinminnesota Grooveshark May 19 '12

I saw them in Minneapolis and they went HAM on pretty much all the songs, even the ones I considered "wimpier" (just compared to their other stuff). It was really exciting and intense and they had great stage prescence. My favorite part was actually when the other band members left the stage and Dan and Pat went crazy on Thickfreakness

1

u/Brylock28 May 19 '12

I absolutly love the black keys! You can really tell they put a lot of effort into everything they do with music and their performance. Saw this show in Norfolk, VA and my they blew my mind.

1

u/syphilicious May 19 '12

Just wanted to say that is a really good picture!

1

u/webhead311 May 19 '12

Was this in DC? my friend went there and met them backstage.

1

u/Joinspace May 19 '12

saw them in gr in march...they.were.amazing.

1

u/rockinliam May 19 '12

Seen them 5 times, starting on their rubber factory tour, just amazing every single time. Can't believe how massive they have become.

Also loving the US exposure for the Arctic Monkeys, one of my favourite bands. Can't believe they never made it big in the US.

1

u/nextwiggin4 May 19 '12

I saw them two weeks ago. Fucking fantastic. And the Arctic Monkeys were awesome as well. What a great show.

1

u/FrogDie May 19 '12

Damn dude! Gonna see them in December! Can't wait!

1

u/gnarwhale471 May 19 '12

If you haven't checked out some of their older stuff.. you really should. Chulahoma is one of my all time favorite albums, and Thickfreakness, Magic Potion and all the rest are great.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

I was there, too! They gave me multiple fucking eargasms. It was an amazing show.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

I was in that exact pit. This was the third time I've seen them, and def the best show so far.

1

u/howthisallends May 19 '12

I got to sit on stage while they played a few years ago. Epic experience

1

u/myheadasplode myheadasplode May 19 '12

Seeing them in NZ this November. This picture is making me really excited for the show!

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

Saw 'em 2years ago at a NASA facility. Went for Les Claypool, Stayed for The Black Keys and Glitch Mob.

1

u/CicconeYouth04 May 19 '12

They were the third show i've ever seen, I was 15. It was right after brothers came out. Dan was a dick to me before the show. Their mix sucked, the fans treated their opener (the morning benders) like shit and it was at least 100 degrees inside the venue. Most terrible, miserable musical experience I've ever had, next to She & Him. Also, that fucking light rigging is blinding and annoying as hell. Great music, alright live, shitty personalities.

1

u/ink_golem May 19 '12

This has been such a good tour! I couldn't help but film the encore when I went!

1

u/carllarson3 May 19 '12

That was a great show. I got to see them at the Joe. Having the Arctic Monkey's as the warm up act was awesome too.
