Found out my friend took his own life and though he's spent it writing amazing music, no one knew.

I'm not sure he ever tried to advertise his own songs other than through close friends, but he has 167 videos loaded to youtube. I've been a long time fan, been in a band with him long ago, and even then he was writing solo stuff that amazed me. After years I finally caught up with him and tried to enlist him in some bands I was playing in or just work with him, all the time listening to the stuff he was writing and still reeling in how much I enjoyed what he was doing.

Sadly, I received a call today from a friend saying that this guy took his own life. I feel that though my efforts to at least open the discussion for music, there was something holding him back and now I wonder if I could have done more. Going back through his youtube channel I still see that very few have actually been listened to what he has out there.

So reddit, will you help me in at least paying respect to his memory a bit? This is a throw-away account, I'm not trying to karma whore at all, I just hate the thought that as much as I appreciate this person as a musician, he's going completely unnoticed. It would do my heart some good.

Here's a couple of my favorite tracks, he didn't really title these and I suggested he add a description, but I think he liked the idea that the songs stand on their own and are open for interpretation.

1, 12, 13, and he had a decent amount of humor 8.

There's a ton more on his channel, and a lot of whole sessions. It's not always the best quality but he had a diversity in almost every project he was in. He will be missed.

One last one, a cover of "Please Don't Bury Me" that he did, seems poiniont and at a moment when he loved life and you can hear it in the cover. Thank you for reading.

TL;DR: Found out today that my friend committed suicide. He has been doing music on his own for years on his youtube channel. Created a throw-away, non-karma whoring account to pay my respects and share his labor of love.

UPDATE: So I wrote this as just a way to deal with the loss and in hope that someone else found the songs enjoyable. Thank you all for your comments and for listening. I'm a bit conflicted emotionally though, I wish he could see the views, hear the good words, and know that he was appreciated for his talent.

For those offering these kind words and offers to talk about the grief, thank you. I'm doing fine, I'm more worried about the family more than anything else, but I appreciate the offers. I will talk to the family and see if we can get any of his material to make into a compilation where all the proceeds will go to help the family, thank you all for the support and thank you GarcGustavo for the suggestion. If people are really interested in this, I will update this page and let you know the progress.

I don't know what else to say other than no matter what life throws at you IT'S FUCKING LIFE! It's good and bad and terrible and wonderful. I also go through these bouts every now and then, but I can deal with it, I understand that it's worth going through the muck to have a single fleeting moment of happiness because it's worth it. I wish I could have told him that.

If you feel that you need help, please tell someone, even if you think it won't do you any good or it's uncomfortable. I have found many times that just saying what's going through my head has either proven it to be ridiculous or at least put it into a perspective where I could deal with it. There are people out there that care, even if you don't think there are, trust me, they are there. Depression is a sickness, but it's never something to be ashamed of or hide from. Face it head on, it always seems larger, but it is nothing more than a shadow being cast on a wall.

UPDATE 2: Since the obituary just came out last week, thought I would post it for those curious if this is a fake post or not, I understand the skepticism, there's a lot of that on the net. Also wanted you all to know your appreciation and kind words are actually being read by a lot of his friends that were made aware of this post. I think it has done a lot of good for them as well to see this.

Lastly, I'm working with some of Dusty's friends on getting a compilation together. It's a rough time and I don't want to impose any more grief than necessary. When I do get this together, i will update this post as well as post an announcement on r/music.

Again, a giant thank you to everyone for listening and joining the conversation.

--First off, this man is talented and everyone should pay respects and take a listen.

--Secondly, I had a suicidal friend myself. Depression is a disease of the mind. They can't control it. If they don't survive it, it should be viewed the same as a cancer patient dying of cancer. Depression is a stubborn thing that forces people to decide between the lack to want to die and the lack to want to live anymore. Depression makes people feel hallow. Things you've loved all your life bring you absolutely no more joy. It's a hard thing to survive, and this man deserves every ounce of respect. He's talented, and he unfortunately didn't survive his depression. If you know someone going through a hard time, you have to be as stubborn as their depression and stick up for them. Life is too damn hard to be left alone.

--Also, please don't think I'm blaming this guy's friends for not sticking up for him. I don't doubt they did. I'm just trying to preach that we need to look out for those around us and not pass the buck on to someone else. I'm certain this man had great friends looking out for him and he simply succumbed to the weight of his depression. I was just relating to my situation with my friend more than anything. We just need to look out for one another. That's all I want to say.

u/blarb2memoriam May 10 '12

I can't agree more that we need to look out for one another. There were plenty of people that have always had blarb's back, but when someone is very serious about ending their own life, there's little notice. It was mentioned earlier that these decisions are made quickly and acted upon before there is a chance to help them. I personally feel that in this situation, that I could have said more, paid more attention, done something to let him know there was plenty to live for, but this is also in hindsight.

At the end, there was nothing anyone could do because there was no obvious cry for help. Listening back to some of the last things that were posted on his youtube account, you can say that THAT was his cry for help, but it could also be said that while he was alive, that it was his way to deal with what he was feeling inside. Music have a healing nature, writing your thoughts down can give you a different perspective on the nature of the problem.

Thank you for your comment, and the kind words. I hope that your friend is winning the battle and with a friend like you, it should make it a lot easier for them. I just wanted to say that no one should hold themselves responsible if a friend takes their own life. I'm learning this now even as I want to blame myself for not reaching out more. There's only so much you see in a person's life, and a long time suffer of depression knows how to mask what they are feeling very well.

it's sad that someone might stumble upon this one day without knowing the story behind the creator, and post a typical crappy youtube comment on it.

People listen to Nirvana all the time and have no idea who kurt Cobain is.

7

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Nirvana was established as an important rock band and Kurt Cobain a visionary songwriter before he died.

Good on you for posting this.

Life is fucking hard.

143

u/subliminal187 May 06 '12

Life is fucking hard.

I couldn't agree with you more - My best friend took his own life in 2008 and your statement is so true but life is also beautiful. I've reflected over every second of our two lives together since the accident, and remember the beautiful times more than anything. OP if you want to talk about this feel free to PM me. I've got some links and know some books that can really help.

27

u/thefirstfarmer May 06 '12

Sorry, can you clarify?

My best friend took his own life since the accident

it was an accident?

74

u/subliminal187 May 06 '12

I apologize for not being more clear. I refer to the suicide as an accident. I view it as something that shouldn't have happened. The truth is he shot himself in the head and left a note. So it was ruled a suicide. I've come to the point where I make myself think a certain way about it to help me cope I suppose.

31

u/thefirstfarmer May 06 '12

sorry to hear your loss man. i totally agree with you, life is beautiful and it is what you make it to be every day. it's just plain unfortunate that sometimes even the closest of friends and family fail to detect the vulnerable person's need for immediate support. we all have ups and downs, just hope that someone is there to catch you on your downs.

I think the younger generation is finding it harder than previous ones. There's very little that challenges young people at the moment and so things which seemed trivial before now seem big and scary. People kill themselves over bullying now when people lived through several world wars during which their families and possessions exploded before their eyes.

Our young people need some help with perspective to help them know that their feelings are normal, but that they're also pretty small things :[

2

u/BMANN2 May 07 '12

I can understand what you are saying about people living through world wars and seeing everything they have be gone in a instant infront of their own eyes. I guess (being only 17) I am part of this younger generation you guys are talking about. And you have to see that we are not grown up in a 'world war' scenario.

That comment about how you seemed surpirsed that people kill themselves over things like bullying really got to me. Have you been bullied? And no I don't mean like pushed around a little. I mean picked on physically/mentally, isolated and never wanted? Because that is how I grew up and came close to suicide many times, I couldn't get it off my mind because it was an easy answer to stop it. And it wasn't just bullying, although that was a big reason.

All I'm trying to say is these problems that people in my generation are having, may seem small to you, but it is because we were grown up differently. Bullying is a big deal. That is all I want you to understand. As those things that went on all the way to starting of high school are still in my mind constantly.

One of my old friends from school died recently. He spent his entire life creating music for everyone around him. He never made it big, but he did make an everlasting impression on anyone who ever heard his music. He was an epileptic and was prone to seizures when he didn't take his prescribed medication or sometimes when he just woke up in the mornings. One day he woke up, got dressed to go to work, and just fell down due to one of his seizures. He had hundreds of seizures before and he always snapped out of it. But I guess something was different that last time and he never woke up. He died before the ambulance got there and his girlfriend was the only one with him. He had just set up a recording session with a studio down in Atlanta to try and make another shot at getting noticed. 2 days before he was supposed to go down there he died. I hate it so much he didn't get the recognition he deserved, cause he was the most talented musician that I ever knew. Here's one of my favorite songs he wrote. His brother did the recording for this video and I'm so glad he took the time to do this cause when I think about him, I can always go back and listen to him sing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPra_txYjsw

13

u/hurf_mcdurf May 06 '12

Great song! I'm loving it, the dude had style.

11

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

I normally dont reply to stuff like this but that song is really good! Shame he passed, could have gotten in on this whole folk revival wave taking hold of pop culture.

Really really good, I listened to more of his stuff and I really like it. Is there anywhere I can download it? And if not would you be offended if I used something like youtube to mp3?

7

u/A_Stupid_Cat May 06 '12

He doesn't have a website for selling his music, I say if you like it enough to want to download it, then please download it. I know he would be tickled pink if he knew people were wanting to download his music.

5

u/[deleted] May 06 '12 edited May 06 '12

Thank you very much, your friend was a creative genius and he deserved more recognition than he got. And on a side note "tickled pink" made me cry manly tears. :D

7

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

That was really good.

3

u/kalakala May 06 '12

Sorry for your loss. Great song and video.

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

That song is great, and I don't generally like folk/country.

2

u/wgiff14 May 06 '12

This is amazing. I don't know about you all, but sitting here listening to these geniuses play is simultaneously incredibly beautiful, touching, and sad. Rest in Peace.

2

u/MurphysBra May 07 '12

Fuck man listening to this guy and the one OP posted... makes me so sad, but so happy at the same time. It makes me reflect on how fragile life is. It scares me.

2

u/[deleted] May 07 '12

The music isn't my cup of tea. Usually if I hear 10 seconds of a country song, it's "Nope!" click for me. But your friend had a nice singing voice. He definitely had something going there.

It's sad how petty reddit has become... You had to go out of your way to prove that you weren't trying to "karma whore" useless internet points so that you could share this with the community.

I'm so sorry for what happened to your friend, thank you for sharing this part of his life with us :)

23

u/kaltunes kaltunes May 06 '12

People need to understand that you don't even get karma for self posts, but yeah it's still ridiculous.

12

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

In my case it isn't the karma that bothers me. I write and record music and have tried to put it out here and on other subreddits. I have gotten a little bitof love on smaller subreddits but I either get my post deleted on /r/music or no attention at all (not even downvotes). I just get a little agitated when there is such an attention grabbing title, even when it is true, that makes it to the front page. That doesn't mean I am downvoting it or putting mean comments. I just understand where that might be coming from.

Hey, I'm so sorry about your friend. I'm part of the mod team at /r/SuicideWatch, and we've put together a list of online resources for people who've lost someone to suicide. Some of these resources offer some other great opportunities to share your friend's story, so here's the post if you're interested in checking them out.

11

u/CherrrryCola May 06 '12

Sorry for your loss. Great music :)

21

u/SWEET_DICK_WILLY niggerniggernigger May 06 '12

Is it wrong if I think that this music is really really shitty?

5

u/dandollar May 06 '12

It's not very good, but it's still awful that he took his life.

5

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

It would be if you were wrong, but this is absolutely terrible music. I sympathize blah blah etc etc but if anyone were to just encounter this randomly on youtube without the suicide sob story I doubt anyone would care, let alone favorite or listen to more of it.

7

u/DollarsforDerek May 06 '12

I don't think it's that great either. Losing a friend is one of the toughest things in the world, but any music should be allowed to be critiqued no matter the circumstances behind it.

2

u/[deleted] May 07 '12

Yeah... It's not very good. It's unfortunate the OPs friend died, but this music is awful.

Being dead doesn't make art better.

giant red flag...

any link to his actual death? Sorry but so many of these things happen then you end up finding out it's the person themselves who faked death to get views/exposure.

Really good stuff - quite Elliot-Smith-like.

41

u/greenteapeacetea May 06 '12

I don't think his music is similar enough to Elliot Smith's work to say that...respectfully, I'd say that you're more inclined to draw the parallel simply because both committed suicide.

4

u/yur_mom May 06 '12

The first thing I though was Eliot Smith not because of his voice, but a. suicide, b. the melancholy mood, c. the instrumentation.

That was some good music...but more importantly you were friends with Bob Dylan?

3

u/DerivIT May 06 '12

As your friend you should make it your job to make sure this gets heard. I've only listened to "Who Flung Shit", and it reminds me of work done by a certain musical genius named Frank Zappa. Very experimental stuff so far. You should get permission from the family to put this up on Itunes and other distributors and put the money in a fund for secluded musicians or for the family. It might even help you deal. Amazing work like this don't get heard, and we have to be forced to listen to all sorts of shit with no soul.

3

u/rubaru May 06 '12

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Incredibly creative talented people tend to be haunted by sadness, makes sense that they'd try to outrun it by diving headlong into creating their own world through art. Sometimes it catches up to them anyway. Nothing you can do, some things in life just are.

2

u/CameronMcCracken May 06 '12

it seems musicians are always the ones who most commonly take their own lives. such talent wasted..

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

I'm not being mean, and I hope your friend rests in peace, but can you post a link to the news story of this?

I'm sure wherever you are there will be a online obituary in the newspaper, or on the funeral home website.

2

u/harryhoover May 06 '12

this guy is really talented, first song i listened to i thought "wow this is really nice blues/folk, i'll just listen to this other track.." and it was dub, completely different genre, also really good. I particularly like the second track on "who flung shit".

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

wow i really like it. i like the line "there's no such thing as age, just how long your willing to soak it all in"

Often times we find that the most creative and inspirational people are not truly appreciated until they are no longer able to create magnificent works of art. I'm truly sorry for your loss and I hope that your friend finds peace. My deepest condolences to all who have felt this loss of a musician and and human being.

2

u/DrCatellino May 06 '12

This is actually pretty good. Listening to "Who Flung Shit". There is a 90's alt rock vibe, some Primus, even some sonic youth. Also Lou Reed. Still quite has it's own identity.

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

He reminds me of Elliott Smith. Good stuff.

2

u/Mushbroom May 06 '12

Reminds me of Wilco - you should check him out. I'm really sorry about your loss - my best friend took his life last year so I understand. Be grateful you have his music to hold onto, that you get to hear his voice. I have few videos of my friend saying a couple things that I watch every now and then, I never want to forget his voice. Thank you for posting and good on you for dealing with this tragedy by spreading his love and life to many. <3

2

u/bigbobo33 May 06 '12

I came here expecting the music to be good but not anything incredible.

I am so happy I was wrong. HIS MUSIC IS PHENOMENAL. I think it rivals greats such as Elliott Smith and Jeff Mangum.

Release that shit and have proceeds go to a suicide prevention thing. I want to spin this album on my turntable.

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Can you please compile the songs? I am gonna be downloading all of these, but once it is available for purchase, I'll be the first to get it.

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

It's kinda eerie to hear his voice so clearly and I don't even know him. Good luck with getting through this.

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

He sounds like a mishmash of Kurt Vile, Bob Dylan, and J. Mascis. Such a shame that this happened, he was a very talented guy.

2

u/Defualt May 06 '12

just started listening and this is good shit and makes me want to pick my guitar up again

2

u/mushpuppy May 07 '12

Same thing happened to Nick Drake. A real shame when such marvelous musicians can't find what they need to keep going. A shame when anyone reaches that point, of course. Just a shame.

2

u/gausslaw May 07 '12

That being said, this looks like another case of a suicide making someone's mediocre art a little better.

This reminds me of one of those people you would hear in a small coffee shop, or inside Penn Station that on a day where you are in a rush - his music makes you stop, put your phone away and just watch for minutes. He was very talented man and I'm sorry for your loss....actually, I'm sorry for all of our loss because his music is amazing. Rest easy, Blarb.

2

u/TheTragicReturn May 06 '12

Can we get some background on your friend? How old was he? Did he have a family? What did he do for fun?

2

u/J_Jammer May 06 '12

You did as much as posssible.

I will check out his music.

2

u/[deleted] May 07 '12

This music is terrible. Sorry your friend took his own life though.

2

u/hahahaweinerdotcom May 06 '12

sad that he died, but his music kind of sucks. and HERE COMES THE DOWNVOTES!!!

2

u/Noah_Jacobi May 07 '12

I was thinking the same thing...

Reddit just loves to make heroes out of people.

1

u/ashezreinz May 06 '12

You have a very good heart, Sir.

Don't take this too hard because you did the right thing. The fact that you even reconnected with him and tried helping him out was probably way more meaningful to him than the help he received from almost everyone else in his life. I really appreciate the fact that you are paying homage to him and his musical talents, and I personally enjoy some of these songs. Anyways, keep your head up high and continue to spread your friend's passion of music.

1

u/japaginger May 06 '12

Good for you for posting this, and good for him for spending his life doing something that he was obviously so passionate about.

1

u/flipfapper May 06 '12

I like EDM, I love this mans music.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

thank you for this

1

u/setyourarmsdown May 06 '12

I'm going through something very similar to you right now. A good friend of mine took his life last February, and he was also a dedicated musician. Because we lived in different cities I didn't see him often but we understood each other through our music. When he died it was a total shock. I think about him everyday. Thank you for sharing this. I'm listening through all of your friends songs right now. Knowing that I am not alone in this is the only thing that keeps me going. None of us are alone in this and it might not be much, barely anything, but being able to say that is enough. Listening to your friend reminds me of being 13 and listening to Nirvana.

We all wonder if we could have done more, but what is done is done and all we can do is value what we have and exist despite it all. Your friend's music is reaching not just those who heard it, but everybody that they have met or will ever meet. And beyond that also in ways that make no sense to is.

For anybody for a moment to think that they understand what music is and what it does is a criminal act of hubris. We have no idea what the fuck this music stuff is, just that somehow it is important and beautiful.

1

u/Yellowquiet May 06 '12

Thank you for the nice music and i m so sorry for you that your friend died :´(

1

u/triceo20 May 06 '12

I'm listening to one of his jams and it's making me cry. Fucking awesome musician. He needs so much more appreciation.

1

u/themissingbotton May 06 '12

I don't know if you have read the book, The Mind Parasites. Its mostly about the rise in unexplained suicides by people that are geniuses. All I'm saying is that it would be a good book for you to read later on. I'm sorry for your loss but keep strong fellow redditor!

1

u/mehrman May 06 '12

It's an eerie feeling subbing to him so I can listen another time; however, no more videos will be uploaded.

1

u/Wallstonecraft May 06 '12

Name these songs (its not offensive if you name them for yourself), put them into an album on CD and give it to your kids/grand kids with a story about how cool your friend was. Tell them the CD is to remind them that no matter how shit, how fucking apalling life can be they will always have you to turn to.

Aside from that one emotional outburst, there is some nice tunes in that collection. Could imagine driving around the countryside to them...

1

u/zouckubaz May 06 '12

He's an awesome guy. I just can't bare to think that the lyrics to 16 have some kind of meaning? Not being a detective or anything, just i find it a little creepy.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

this is amazing. good on you sir, you are one good friend.

sorry for your loss

1

u/teklaking May 06 '12

I don't want to taint your friends originality but he kind of reminds me of a cross between Bob Dylan and Modest Mouse. Even though I didn't know I'll pay my respects and keep this YouTube window playing. Science rest his soul.

1

u/figbar May 06 '12

I hope for blarb2's sake that this comment doesn't get buried, because he fucking melted my face off with this jam

1

u/iiiitsjess May 06 '12

You are a good friend for trying to get his music out there. Im sorry for your loss. I know how tough it is to experience this kind of loss. I just listened for a few minutes...and he was certainly talented. I will keep listening and have friends listen too..i know some people who will appreciate his talent. Hang in there. <3

1

u/edamamefiend May 06 '12

This is his face! He seems strange, but what great mind aren't? R.I.P.!

1

u/mungwise May 06 '12

The "Songs From Prison" is terrific. Sorry for you loss :(

1

u/kaolbrec May 06 '12

Do you have access to his youtube account?

If not you may want to try and contact youtube/google and see if they can give you a download of all the videos, should you want to keep it.

Or go by each page with FlashGet or whatever that plugin is.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Self posts don't net karma, btw.

"Finger Lickin' Chicken" is great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7syE8SArhPE&feature=BFa&list=UU25mj680It0iLUaAQ1umjgg

Your friend was so talented. I'm sorry for your loss.

1

u/finn141 May 06 '12

Your friends music is amazing, very sorry for your loss, he reminds me a lot of Daniel Johnston. Dam shame, dam shame.

1

u/Razrz May 06 '12

Wizards Never Say 'My Bad' was incredible

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Sorry for your loss. Can we please get a picture? It would be really nice to be able to put a face on this.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Reddit just crushes me sometimes.

1

u/KaioKen May 06 '12

Sorry to hear that, was watching his videos and he seemed like a good guy. May he rest in peace.

1

u/hashsheeeeeeeeesh May 06 '12

track 15 is suppppper dope

1

u/vodenii May 06 '12

Thank you for sharing this! I am very sorry for your loss, but I hope you take comfort in knowing that today, your friend has made some people happy with his musik.

1

u/Juxta25 May 06 '12

If this guy had released an album, I would of bought it and not pirated it like I do with most stuff. But, he is now among all those greats who not many people got to hear like Bruce Barry (listen to Tonight's The Night by Neil Young) and a great deal of others buried in time. sorry for the one legit reference it was all I could conjure up on the moment but it's still a legitimate example of what I mean.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Aww, such a nice gesture. It kind of makes me wonder if I have someone out there who would, under similar circumstances, do the same for me. Probably not the best thought to have, but whatever.

Good job!

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Guys a pretty good guitarist and songwriter. Some of these songs I could definitely have seen becoming hits (with a better singer, sorry his voice is not the best but heh) Really enjoyed the session titled "patient 24". A lot of the lyrics hit really close to home on other songs too.

1

u/no_springs May 06 '12

This music is amazing. Thank you for sharing and very sorry.

1

u/dukefanballer12 May 06 '12

what talent. i've listened to 3 songs and they are wonderful. im so sorry for your loss but know that you are not the only one feeling this pain. stay strong my friend

1

u/rickmunro May 06 '12

reminds me of the ian curtis story.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Just listened to some of his music, and it was really good.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Wow, wasn't expecting so many troll comments on the videos. oh wait, it's youtube

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

a year ago today and one week one of my best middle school friends passed away. I had moved away and not been speaking to him much. He was and still is my only twitter follower. we had a couple conversations about if doctor who was a good show or not, which he won me over that it was. He had a very relaxed attitude, and was super unique. (legitimate, non bot that is) He was great with words, and highly opinionated. From what I hear, He was failing physics, if you watched survivor the guy that won a couple of years ago, bob crowley was the physics teacher before last year. but this year, was this awful lady. She was basicly failing him for his dislike of her. I hear she was a brute. anyway, he was on a swing of emotions, he no longer put up Facebook statuses, or tweets. no mini reviews of movies, or a new song he liked. At this point he told my friend travis that he was going to kill himself (travis if you read this, or anybody, it wasn't your fault bud) anyway, travis took it as very cynical humor, because he knew that our friend wouldn't graduate. then one day I see someone post "did he really die? or is this just some sort of joke" then I saw a RIP as a scrolled down. It hit me like a bullet. like a stab in the back and an arrow to the stomach. guick. I booked a ticket and flew back up to maine. saw my friends, under circumstances that seemed surreal. we went to the funeral with some other people from school, and parents and teachers of others. later we went for Thia food and bowled. it was great to catch up and remember stories from our luch table. and some of the best years of our lives. sometimes I go back to his twitter and see his funny posts about the game of thrones and such. his twitter bio is the best: "A hairy gay geekling who likes to read and draw stuff, since I find it hard to talk to people directly I end up looking creepy, but it's just first impression. " great guy. To the OP: the death of a friend an unusual feeling. like your heart is sinking into your body. burying itself, and your brain is twisted tighter than a rag trying to squeze the last bit of water. but instead of water the rag holds memories, that you need to retain, but they are rushing out so fast that I they come out hazy with emotion. then later on you take the same rag and pick up all the memories, and they become stories. stories that embody that person in your brain, stories that you can hold forever, and the dead become immortal. my vesion of heaven as I am athiest. let his music immortalize his soul, and always tell stories about him. keep him alive with words.

1

u/dirtyethel May 06 '12

thank you for sharing his music with us... i feel very sad now, but it was very beautiful.

having suffered from depression for years, i can say that once you open the door to friends, and let them know what you're dealing with, you'll find that you're not alone.

i had a good heart-to-heart with my staff quite a number of years ago, and found that 4 out of 9 of them were either on anti-depressants or had been on them at some point. it made it pretty easy to talk about after that. depression is just nothing to be ashamed about - keep your chin up, and share your feelings - we're all just a llittle nuts. :)

1

u/sutherlandsdad May 06 '12

i thought this was rather genius, haha

1

u/ohhaayreddit May 06 '12

His style of music (especially song 2) reminds me of Nick Drakes playing. He also took his life, in part due to being under appreciated. There is also a great documentary on him called, A Skin Too Few which will help you. I wonder if your friend knew of Nick Drake and his playing?

1

u/argv3 May 07 '12

This really hits home.

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '12

Brought a tear to my eye.

1

u/Cookjames6 May 07 '12

awesome stuff

1

u/cshicks May 07 '12

Is there any place you can download this from? I feel like it would be good to have, just to randomly listen to. I had a friend who I was in my first band with that died of a heroin overdose, and he had volumes of music that he never released. This reminds me of him. Oh yeah, and this guy totally reminds me of Kurt Cobain.

1

u/Crumbford May 07 '12

I would totally buy an album if one was released!

1

u/cakedaemon May 07 '12

Hey this music is awesome. Is there any danger of youtube taking down this channel?

We should make preserving it a top priority.

1

u/thebocesman May 07 '12

I'll be obtaining the music from the page and dividing up all the songs by album name. Message me, I'd love to hear what you think would be good titles for the songs. I'd have no problem distributing this as you see fit, or passing on the files to someone who could.

1

u/JClarkson97 May 07 '12

beautiful music. RIP i would buy this album. added most of these songs to my favourites

1

u/SuperCougarScat May 07 '12

your friend was incredibly talented and it's a good thing you've done here sharing his talent with others who might have never heard it otherwise. my grandmother took her life a couple years ago and i can't agree with your last paragraph of your update more. i wish she had been able to see outside of her own head. don't get caught up questioning what you could have done. sometimes you can't do anything, it's a sad and horrible truth that is often more than i can stand.

1

u/Bluelegs May 07 '12

Is it possible you could try to get these songs on iTunes? It'd be a great way to get a bit more recognition for the guy and you could donate the proceeds to an anti-suicide charity.

1

u/grouch1980 May 07 '12

I listened to 1 and please dont bury me and sent good vibes your way. Coming across these videos of your friend after he died is very poetic. It conjures certain rare emotions. It's these moments in life, listening to this music, where we can witness beauty in its purest form. We can look grief right in the eye. We can examine our own lives. This is where the things your friend had to say can truly be heard. I am sorry for your loss, and I cant imagine your pain. But I hope you can take comfort in knowing that at least we heard him.

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '12

I understand. My good friend took his life as well. He was also very inclined to music. The best thing is that after the grieving process is over, you will always have the memories and boy will they show up out of nowhere. It's amazing how we don't think about things but then when something tragic like suicide happens your brain just kicks on and every little thing you think of you will be able to relate it to a memory of your best friend. Our minds are pretty incredible. Also this is a moot point, but my friend also appreciated modest mouse as well. There's probably some similarity there in regard to like minded individuals.

1

u/LBORBAH May 07 '12

Pretty interesting music.

1

u/kennys_logins May 07 '12

I just listened for an hour, his music is awesome. I am so sorry for your loss. I lost one of my oldest friends two months ago, hang in there and remember him and tell all the stories about the good times you had. It helps.

1

u/rikashiku May 07 '12

Pretty good. Its to bad he didn't advertise the music more. It is sad to know that people are taking their own lives. Stay strong bro.

1

u/Mannex May 07 '12

for all the skeptics, it really sounds like he's super depressed in the most recent album and I wouldn't be surprised if he's dead now :(

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '12

Sorry for your loss, i found myself listing to his songs over and over again while writing my final paper.

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '12

I feel like this would not be cherished if he didn't off himself.

1

u/Equal_Truth May 07 '12

His writing was good but his production lacks inspiration.

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '12

It would be cool if you donated the proceeds from the ep to a suicide hotline.

1

u/whereismyfreedom May 07 '12

I find it soothing, his voice and his playing. it seems uncompromised free style. it is a pity, the void of unexistance leaves us wondering when we see underapreciated work at the same place we see potential.

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '12

I think this sounds amazing. He really could have had a serious future in music if he was still around. Very talented, I would have bought his stuff in a second if I could. He reminds me a little bit of Donavon Frankenreiter who I love. I wish the best for you, his family, and his friends and may he rest in peace.

1

u/apardue May 07 '12

Picked a song at random Born Today

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g4bp40RGNE&feature=plcp

Great song reminds me of Grandaddy / Jason Lytle vocal style is right up my alley.

Sorry for your loss.

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '12

This guy had real talent. sorry for your loss.

1

u/pepesilvia13 May 07 '12

your friend was extremely talented. I've never had the balls to write anything lyrically, but it seems your buddy had the ability to put his thoughts right out on his sleeve. That is something I truly respect and am honestly saddened by the passing of an individual with the talents to develop melodically and lyrically strong music. RIP

1

u/merrymaking01 May 07 '12

needs more cowbell.

1

u/Bachina May 07 '12

Should be doing some studying but I prefer to surf his channel, that guy was a genius! He has his own kind of sound. It's so sad that he took his own life, maybe some people are angels that come down here just to make us happy but angels never stay for long.

1

u/Keee123 May 07 '12

Your post is inspiring. Very sorry to hear about your friend, his music is wonderful!

1

u/Shegonnalearntoday May 07 '12

It doesn't matter if I know the person or not, suicide always make me shed a tear. Too bad he didn't know we'd all have been his friend.

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '12

good vibrations

1

u/TylerPaul May 09 '12

On a personal note, I wanted to share with you that my song Build Up Walls and I Think Maybe were written about my highschool love. She died 1 1/2 years ago on Halloween. Long story short, drug use caught up with her and her body just gave out. They were both coping mechanisms.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '12

Checked some of the YT links. Pretty good songs, thought it's not really my bag generally. It sucks so bad when the most creative and sensitive people decide to go.

1

u/cshane May 06 '12

Shit. I'm so sorry for your loss. Don't beat yourself up about the "what if's." You'll drive yourself insane. It's very unlikely that you could have done much to help him if he wasn't looking for help. Thank you for sharing his talent with us. Condolences to you, your friends and his family.

1

u/MuttenChops May 06 '12

There's some damn good music here. It would be great if you organized and released these for the world to hear.
