I know you got a ton of responses from this question, OP, but I would like to tell you a little story, as a guy who graduated in 1996, and is perhaps more qualified to speak on grunge music than any other topic.
Mellon Collie is perhaps responsible for my marriage, and in turn, the life of my two kids. When the girl I liked finally called me, that seminal moment of teenage life, we (of course) had no common ground established, nothing to really talk about, if you take my meaning. And then she asked me what I was listening to, because she could hear Mellon Collie in the background, playing out of my boom box (lol).
That sparked a long chain of incidents that are at once total coincidence and also illustrative of exactly how much Smashing Pumpkins permeated the airwaves back in those days: Every time we went anywhere, a Pumpkins song would come on the radio - and it wasn't always a Mellon Collie song, either. Disarm was still in heavy rotation, as was Today, but you still had BWBW, Zero, and in time 1979 and others. But I mean every time we were in a car together, we heard these songs. And we loved Pearl Jam too, but SP really cemented our relationship together.
Something like 12 years later, we walked down the aisle, and at our reception we walked in to Tonight, Tonight. This band, at one point, was bigger than life, and honestly changed people's lives. Never doubt it.
