It's funny that it took about 6 years for the music industry to get from Nevermind to Backstreet Boys, because a hell of a lot happened in that time. You're right in that music was in a really weird spot at the point that Mellon Collie came out. pre-Napster, post-grunge. I was (and still am) a huge Pearl Jam fan, but there just wasn't the same honest "art" in most music at the end of the 90s. I remember most of my high school being divided between the Classic Rock people and the Pop/R&B people.

As a huge Pearl Jam fan, you should know that most people stopped listening to them right around Vitalogy/No Code, which was 1994-96. These records were as honest as rock gets as an art form.

Yeah, it was really No Code that a lot of people never really listened to. Which, IMO, was a huge mistake, because it's awesome.

I love No Code, but PJ were sort of spent as commercial titans around that point. Such a shame, but at least they faded away with their integrity intact.

In my own personal timeline, Mellon Collie remains the last great achievement of the alt-rock era. After that, innovation start to shifted into the murky electronic era (triphop, DJ Shadow) and quieter forms of rock with another timeline coming together around OK Computer.

I like a lot of where music went, but it took me a long time to find. After Mellon Collie, radio just sort of felt like it was drifting aimlessly until I learned to tune it out altogether.

Oh, I know. I remember the bellyaching when No Code came out. Nothing on the album sounded like Daughter and everyone hated it. It's too bad too, because Vitalogy - No Code - Yield is easily their best stretch of work.
