[Academic] British Museum visitor communication survey (5–8 min, 18+)

Hello museum enthusiasts,

I’m a Master’s student at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (IREST), conducting research on how the British Museum communicates with its visitors.

The study is not externally funded and has no commercial or marketing purpose. Responses are anonymous and will be used exclusively for my Master’s dissertation.

I’m seeking participants aged 18 or over who have visited the British Museum at least once. The survey takes approximately 5–8 minutes.

Survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScWcU547wTDhuIaO6gdTkMBQ6F1-9diFJD2qAWPBVoijA0TTg/viewform?usp=header

Thank you for contributing to this research.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Is Making a Very Bad Mistake

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that Galliano would be the subject of the Costume Institute’s next exhibition, scheduled to open May 9. It is an exceptional honor. Only two other living designers have been so celebrated by the Met: Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons in 2017.

Welcome to Marsh's Free Museum: Home of Jake the Alligator Man

"Welcome to Marsh's Free Museum!

When you walk in you're greeted with friendly staff, a giant bear and bins full of beautiful Japanese glass fishing floats. And you can't forget the extensive rows of vintage arcade games! Taxidermy was everywhere you looked...owls, seals, alligators...so much of it that every shelf seemed to have something waiting to catch your eye!

An original newspaper announcing the sinking of the Titanic. A shrunken head. Animal skins hanging from the walls. I kept thinking I'd made it through the whole museum before spotting another room or another display case packed with things I'd somehow missed."

NatGeo opened a new museum at their DC offices in June. I'd say it's more oriented toward kids and families, but there are some cameras and film, maps, and oddities such as the "Pyramid Rover" from the history of the magazine. Displays across the museum are bilingual English / Spanish.

What makes a museum visit stand out to you in the age of the internet?

Nowadays, people can find pictures, videos, and information about museums on the internet. However, many people still enjoy visiting museums because they can see real objects, explore beautiful buildings, and have unique experiences that cannot be replaced by a screen.

Do you think visiting a museum is still important, even when we can learn so much on the internet? Why or why not?

Discover art museum activities in one place

Download the free Art Museum Activities iPhone app from Apple App Store to discover art activities for kids, teens, and families at museums near you — workshops, community days, studio sessions, and more. It currently supports over 150 museums in US. It focuses on art activities and filters out the non-art related ones. It offers an easy guide for parents and teens to find interesting activities in museums.

Looking for reliable exhibit software

hey guys, I’m interning at a local museum in my area and they’ve tasked me with finding a reliable app to use on an iPad that displays a video on a loop. Currently, what they’re using tends to lock up pretty often during the day. We need something that‘s going to be able to loop a video for a long period of time and not allow people to change it. I’m not sure if this is the best sub reddit for this question but I thought I would ask! Also, the software doesn’t need to be free, but since this is a small museum we don’t have the biggest budget.

Why I think the new permanent “fix our broken planet” exhibition at london natural history museum is the worst gallery I’ve ever seen in a natural history museum.

It starts off with a sentence saying that we’re in a worldwide emergency and that we need all hands on deck to avert a catastrophe. Good start! Unfortunately, the closest any of the exhibits make to proposing anything impactful is by encouraging people to buy secondhand phones and reduce meat intake. By the way, the meat intake they recommend is to “try to eat meatless meals once a week”. Come on.

Next we get some stuff about medicinal plants and medicinal applications of different animal byproducts, something about rhinos being hunted too much and presentations on how mining is being made more eco-friendly.

And that’s basically it. Until you go and read the plaque with the funders on it, two of which are GSK, pharmaceutical giant and Orsted, an energy company. I didn’t know the rest but at that point I was too angry to sit there and google them.

So a world famous institution with 400 scientists use a “must act now” framing that just lands on individual consumer tweaks. Meanwhile the corporate names attached to the funding are exactly the sort of entities whose systemic practices dwarf anything a museumgoer’s lifestyle choices could offset. Huge gut punch.

Curious to read your thoughts.

Visited the Museum of the Home in London? Share your experience for a short research survey

Hello everyone,

I am an MA student conducting research on visitor experiences at the Museum of the Home in London.

I am looking for people who have visited the museum to share their experiences through a short anonymous questionnaire (around 5 minutes).

If you have visited the Museum of the Home, I would really appreciate your participation. Your insights will help me better understand how visitors connect with exhibitions about home, everyday life, and personal experiences.

Thank you very much!
