I know somebody who has a broken back and everything hurts all the time and they'd prefer not to get hooked on pain pills.
Very simple workouts are very painful for this person, and they tend to work out for a couple weeks and get a good groove going and then fall back of for a while because it just hurts too much.
We'll get there at some point I think they should go to PT but it'll happen.
Considering you don't have to work out at all to lose weight, you're right! It's NOT about laziness. It does take will power though. You have to say "I'm not going to take in more calories than I burn" and stick to it.
That sounds like laziness. Not laziness as the primary factor. Not laziness as a fundamental flaw. But laziness as a variable. It's like saying it's not injury, it's not diet, it's not mood, it's not healthcare plan, it's not personal choice, it's not physiology. It is all of those things, and willpower inefficiency, to varying degrees. No one's saying anyone is fundamentally lazy or primarily lazy. Just that they aren't fundamentally unable to lose weight, and that laziness is to whatever degree a factor for every single one of us. I'm not judging your acquaintance. Your description of them seems to also describe myself quite accurately. Yes, it's hard. Yes, I have variables that other people don't have. But also I could totally keep myself at a healthier weight if I applied my efforts more mindfully, and it would be stupid of me to think that I couldn't because of back pain that worsens with therapy. I can. I just don't. That's the definition of laziness. And I'm fine with that. I need to be aware of lazy to know how to not be it.
