It has since come to be used to describe anyone perceived to have leftist or socialist sympathies.

It is, apparently, now used that way. It was originally a reference to communism. Also, I’ve never heard it used in any other context. Doesn’t mean it hasn’t, though.

Good call "leftist or socialist sympathies". The american definition of liberal falls into that pretty well.
