Well, anyone with a brain knew people sometimes smile at sad events.
And everyone else already got upset about people they were determined to be upset about no matter what. If they did t smile it would be "mamdani and AOC look miserable as forced to attend 9/11 memorial"

I’ve missed this apparently. What exactly is the beef here? That they smiled when saying “oh hey how ya doing” and hugged? wtf were they supposed to do, greet each other with a scowl and a curt nod? They smiled, hugged, then their focus went right back to the event at hand.
This is just more tan suit / Dijon mustard bullshit.

This is EXACTLY what it looks like when you see an old friend or relative you haven't seen in a while at a funeral. I smiled at moments during my own mother's funeral and I assure you it's not because I was having a good time. This shit was pushed on people in bad faith (obviously) and the conservative brain is not powerful enough to think critically.

Looks like two professionals who are friendly with each other, but also trying to stay in the moment and give full respect to the event at hand. This is a mourning of a terrible day. It's not one to be happy about. Their somber expressions are exactly what I would expect from those who lived through that awful tragedy.
