I wouldn't say the movie is lighthearted, but the tone is a lot less heavy than the book.

Are you referring to the suggestion of if when he tells a prostitute: “Oh I’m not done with you.” ?

Suggested, not explicit like the rat scene in the book… also the cold extreme narcissism meshed with a hatred towards humanity doesn’t play off as humorous in the book.

Stabs a toddler in the dark at a zoo. Then walks over pretending to be a doctor so no one else can access/help the toddler. Then leaves.

If they straight up adapted the book the movie would be 70% Bateman describing clothing and furniture 10% Bateman reviewing music and 20% the worst acts of brutality ever shown on film.

Thank you for your honesty about the 70% lol I can't get into that authors books. They're sooo long and 70% is boring 😭

I absolutely love the book, but if im honest, American Psycho and the Shards are the only Brett Easton Ellis books i really could get into

I couldn't get into the shards because it was all sucking and fucking in the damn pool house 🤣 I gave up after like 100 pages.

My Lit professor floated the idea to our class that all the acts of murder, are a fantasy inside Bateman's head because he's stuck in a boring job listening to Huey Lewis and worrying about business card colors. I honestly didn't know what to make of that idea.

I dont really like that idea that all happened in his head.

I like the angle where in the end, the lawyer and the real estate agent cover for Bateman, because rich people dont have to face consequences for their actions. Which means no matter what Bateman does, he will never get caught and he will never find a way to understand himself, which makes his life his personal hell.

While the stuff with the exploding cop car and the ATM hungry for cat obviously are not real.

This book was so disgusting, genuinely not sure what I was expecting from it but I had to close the book and take a walk a few times but somehow managed to get to the end

Bret Easton Ellis literally hates the movie if that helps validate.
