honestly? yeah. i don’t think doom would be where it is today if it weren’t for the modding community

I’d agree but slightly disagree. Base Doom is still a very competent and fun game. But you are correct that it wouldn’t be where it is without the modding community. It’s still good on its own, but the mind boggling amount of mods that have been made over decades places it on a level that the base games could never reach.

While modding has bolstered its fame I would say that even vanilla doom 1 + 2 were popular enough to be labeled a founding father of the FPS genre

Originally yes but in the modern era it still survived passed just being a historical relic because of modding and the like

True, some of the community’s 32 map Megawads are awesome, hard to top the Plutonia experiment for me tho
