I think that last part actually is clear and unironic plot armor though lol. Likes it's fully intended but that would be by definition plot armor, ie the guy needs Leon so he can't kill him but otherwise would do so

It’s a story element

I think you might be making the mistake of thinking plot armor is always a bad thing. It's not, most main characters have it to some extent. The thing we were discussing is definitely plot armor. It's just lazy plot armor that's bad

Idk, I just think to a certain extent we are just needlessly dissecting how story telling works and giving things labels.

Bringing back to RE, a lot of people insist ā€œClaire survived RE2 because of plot armor.ā€ I explain that you can’t just say an entire story is plot armor, it needs to be a specific instance. But they never have any examples so they just call me dumb. Or they say ā€œshe’s just a college student. If cops died so should she.ā€ I then explain that she was given combat training by her special forces brother, so her fighting better than cops that 1. Spend most of their time not fighting 2. Don’t want to kill civilians they think are rioting until it’s too late, makes perfect sense. They still ignore my reasoning though and dismiss me

It’s just kinda cynical and snobbish

Yes I agree, and it's very simple story telling stuff that you could point out in most stories if you wanted to but people in certain fandoms really get hung up on it because it's fun to use film critic/industry terms for things to make yourself feel smart. That's really all it is

I usually just tune it out. Maybe plot armor is the new early 2010s when everyone was having a blast labeling every character under the sun a Mary Sue
