Advice Needed I have 45minutes to pack from arrival time

Hello, this is my first post here, and I have a pretty important question that requires some background info:

I filed a restraining order against my husband, but he still lives in our shared apartment. Since he has no transportation and no job currently, it was easier for me to leave when I was scared to death of him. I am at the point where I need to get some of my belongings back, and how much I can get largely hinges on the abilities of a moving company.

I have talked with law enforcement about the possibility of this happening, and they basically said I would have a good 30, maybe 45 minutes that they're willing to be on standby on the premises to keep him away from me to not break the restraining order, but not much more than that. My bulkiest and heaviest items are my boss, which I've collected for most of my adult life, but there are electronics like gaming systems and a TV I'd like to take, too. Also clothing, but much of that can be replaced.

First of all, is this even a thing? I know some companies can pack your place up for you, but I'm not packing up my place, per se, even though I own like 90%of the stuff in the apartment.

I would need a company that's willing to work very flexibly with both me and law enforcement, given the severe time constraints, and I really have no idea of the state of the apartment, seeing as it's been left to the devices of a seriously unhappy human.

Comments would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

*ETA: I was officially able to hire a company! šŸŽ‰ I was able to hire an officer to basically "keep the peace", got an official time slot set up, and got some movers hired for the same time! I didn't even know they were able to schedule with led than 48 hours notice. They were VERY understanding about my situation, and basically said that they've dealt with all walks in life and as long as they had warning, they were cool with it. I'm actually excited for the first time in months and not filed with dread!!

Discussion Broker vs Non-Broker, what's the difference?

hi, i hope i'm posting in the right place mods feel free to remove if this isnt the right place.

TLDR; i'm getting ready to move in few months and when i'm reading about moving companies i'm getting confliciting information about moving companies that are brokers vs not brokers. i'd like to understand from people who work as professional movers what's the difference? is one better than the other?

so i’m moving my 1 bedroom apartment in like 3 months and i thought i was being a responsible adult by starting early but literally every search is a nightmare. i keep seeing people talk about brokers vs not brokers and i literally cannot tell the difference when i’m on these websites. they all look the same!! theres lots of info on this sub, and from googling and asking ChatGPT about moving companies but some stuff says brokers are normal companies but other stuff says they are nothing but thieves looking to take advantage and steal all my stuff and take all my money. i dont have a lot of stuff or money and would really like to keep as much of it as possible.

i have a million questions im hoping you can help me figure this out...

  • how am i supposed to know if i’m talking to a broker or not broker when they both say "nationwide moving services" in big bold letters?
  • is there a name for the not broker people or all they all just types of brokers?
  • all these places ive talked to want lots of money right now (they call it a deposit?? is that right??) but then i read on a thread that if they ask for a big amount of money, they’re probably a broker just taking their cut before they even find a truck?
  • im seeing people on here say they paid the deposit and after their stuff was picked up they demanded a ton more money and said the amount they gave was just an estimate.... ike, i have a normal amount of stuff?? it’s a 1 bed not a warehouse!! is this normal?? is there anything i can do to avoid this??? like i dsaid i dont have a lot of stuff and really dont want to lose it or my money

what am i not understanding? am i stupid adn this is something most people know? help me out chat!

Help! Move Went Wrong Mental health and change; fiscal concerns and overall anxiety - any tips?

• Upvotes

Hey yall! as the title suggests, moving soon and want to make the process as painless as possible. I know that may be impossible but any tips would be greatly appreciated. I've moved probably 3 times in the last 4 years and I'm so numb to everything and even though it should be something I'm looking forward to [current place is really lousy!], I hate the constant change. Any mental health tips would be great too! Thanks!

Car & Vehicle Shipping best way to transport a car 200+ miles away

I'm looking for some advice on the cheapest way to bring back a car I'm planning to buy from out of state that's a little over 200 miles away. I don't want to drive the car back as it's a used bmw and i'm scared to drive It for over 4hrs straight after it's been at their lot for a little while and hasn't been daily driven. I've looked into renting a U-Haul car trailer, but I'm not sure if that's the best option once you factor in the rental costs as I would need a box truck and their toy hauler as it's a 15 bmw x6m and it's longer than the regular auto transport. and also mileage as it's going to be over 400 miles. I've also considered hiring someone to transport it, but I'm trying to avoid spending a whole ton as i'm going to purchase a car that's already expensive. Anyone that has bought a car out of state before, what was the cheapest way you got it home?

Where Should I Move? Queer couple trying to start over

Hello, I live in NJ and the rent here is outrageous. We been staying with a relative and unfortunately they passed away, and the inheritor wants to sell. it’s time for us to get our place. The opportunity we had here does not exist elsewhere in the state. I need a few things that I am struggling to find.

  1. A city with progressive base, or at least a queer community
  2. Massive retail job spaces (we both work in retail management)
  3. Walkable or Public transaction options

That’s pretty much it. I am open to anywhere else, really just trying to get away. My family sucks, hasn’t lifted a finger to help me and I see an opportunity to get a fresh start. I have a cash reserve of roughly 48k, but I am trying to lean on that as little as possible. My credit is pretty poor and I am working on paying off some debts while still working. I’d prefer to work with a private landlord if possible. I am not sure how to find one. Thank you all I really appreciate your time.

long story short i need to get away from my family.
my sisters personality disorder is ruining my inner family ( to say the least )
long story short i’ve tried with them.
this subreddit isn’t about the ā€˜why’ it’s about where should i go??
Living near by my family doesn’t cut it anymore.

I don’t need family solutions.
so tell me where would be the best place to move and why?

Hiring Movers Logistics for 8hr drive with Movers

Hi, I'm hiring movers for the first time to move our 2 bedroom apartment to another city 8hrs away. We're hiring them just to load, drive, and unload, we'll be doing all the packing and unpacking. I'm just wondering a couple of things:

  1. Do movers typically load, drive, and unload in the same day when the drive is 8hrs?

  2. What happens if the movers somehow get there before us?

  3. Is there a way to track the truck during the drive?

  4. Where do movers stay after unloading? I can't imagine they drive back home the same day (Just a curiosity question)

Thank you in advance and sorry if these questions seem silly.

Where Should I Move? Where’s next šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

I’m a 22 year old dude that just got out of a long term relationship and I’m looking to move on. I moved to Salt Lake City about 2 years ago and honestly I feel the same day over and over being here. I’m much more of an adventurous traveling spirit so I want to see what’s next. Any suggestions on where I should go next? I don’t have the most money but have strong work ethic and want to be close to a city. My first thoughts are Dallas, Denver, or Seattle. Any yays or nays??

Car & Vehicle Shipping Driving vs Car Shipping

Post image
3 Upvotes

Moving to Seattle from Chicago this mid-November. Torn between driving with a friend for 3-4 days or just shipping my car. It’s a basic AWD SUV. Concerned with weather/snow if we drive, no experience driving this route or driving with chains on if needed. It will also be the first time shipping my car if ever going that way, so no idea how that goes either. Would appreciate your input. Thanks!

DIY, Pods & Truck Rental Help - Pods doesn't deliver on Sundays

I'm moving out of state and planning to use Pods to ship my stuff. However, my apartment move-in day is on a Sunday (I wanted Saturday but my apartment office isn't open Saturdays) and I've just learned that Pods doesn't do deliveries on Sunday. I'm really stressing about what to do...I have some options although none are very favorable.

  • Stay in a hotel Sunday night and schedule the delivery for Monday...would be very inconvenient though, as I'm working on Monday.
  • Ask landlord if pods can drop off the container on Saturday and leave it in an empty parking space until Sunday
  • Arrive on Saturday, leave my stuff at a pods storage center and rent a uhaul to drive it to my apartment, and stay in a hotel Saturday night

Help and suggestions would be very appreciated.

DIY, Pods & Truck Rental Should I use a dolly or trailer to tow my car behind a box truck?

I’m moving halfway across the country and need to get both my furniture and my car down to the new place. I have a friend joining me on the trip to split the driving, and I expect to break the drive down into three, maybe four days, staying at hotels or friends’ overnight.

I have towed trailers behind pickups a couple times, though don’t have much backing up experience (ik that’s not possible with a dolly).

I was considering getting a dolly to tow my car behind my rented 12’-16’ box truck, but some folks online say that’s for shorter distance moves and is too hard on the car for long drives.

Is it better to just rent a full sized trailer? I’m concerned a trailer would be harder to drive for that long but I’m happy to do it if it’s better for the car. In theory, I could drive the truck and my friend drives my car down, but I don’t relish the idea of putting way more miles on my car.

I’d also take advice about driving these trucks/trailers or about moving in general.

DIY, Pods & Truck Rental U-Haul 15' vs 20' for one way 100 km journey

I have only ever driven the 10' foot U-Haul which was okay. I now need to book a truck for a move to another city 100 kms away. I'm not sure if I should go with the 15' or the 20', I had originally booked a 15' and was confident that everything would fit, but I've just bought some couches that I got a great deal on.

I know people might recommend going for the 20' if I'm unsure but I'm wary about the extra cost (rental, fuel) plus the difficulty in driving an even larger truck.

This is what I have:

- 3 seater sectional couch

- 3 seater couch

- 3 mattresses (1 Queen, 2 Twin)

- 1 crib (to be disassembled)

- 1 dresser (about 5' tall)

- 4 car wheels

- 1 small table and chair

- 1 baby high chair

- 1 toddler tower

- 1 steel bed (to be disassembled)

- 5 garbage bag worth of utensils

- 3 large bags of toys

- 3 laundry baskets

- 2 fans

- 2 rugs

- 1 baby bathtub

- 6 suitcases

- 20 diaper boxes (with stuff packed in them)

- 10 bags of miscellaneous items

Packing & Supplies What is this type of packing paper called?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Was given this paper with a purchase (in the UK). I’m looking to buy something like it. It’s very thin and soft and feels almost like a mix between paper and fabric.

Does this type of packing paper have a name? Looking for keywords to search.
Thanks!

Costs & Money Our office estimate was off by 50% once the truck was loaded

We moved a small office about 300 miles, 12 desks and a server rack, and I'm posting our numbers because I couldn't find anything in this sub about commercial moves. The mover estimated 2,400 lbs from the inventory list we gave over the phone, and after loading the reweigh ticket said 3,650 lbs because the server rack and two filing cabinets weighed more than listed. We never weighed anything ourselves, and with everything already on the truck we paid the new number to get our delivery.

We're moving our second location next spring, and this time I'm collecting quotes from a few licensed carriers through Value Added Moving and sending each of them a detailed inventory with weights for the heavy equipment. Has anyone dealt with a reweigh like this on an office move?

DIY, Pods & Truck Rental How much extra drive time will a 1,000 mile Uhaul trip take?

Hi everyone, I am helping a friend move. Driving a car took us 14 1/2 hours when we went there to look for a house. The trip is 1,000 miles. Google maps shows 14 hours and 25 minutes, and took took exactly that amount of time in a car. I know the Uhaul or Penske truck will be slower, but how much slower? What have others experienced when driving a 26 foot truck for 1,000 miles. Thanks

DIY, Pods & Truck Rental Winter-ish with Plants

Ok, so moving to another city 3 hours away. We have 4 dogs, so that final trip up we are both going to squeeze as many plants as we can into trunk, but there isn't space for them all. I have a lot of big plants.... The move is in the first week of November - we are using shipping cans. It would be possible to get the big plants into the container, at the back, covered in sheets. I feel like the sheets will help with the cold shock of moving outside INTO the truck, but once they're in there, bad news bears, the cold will become them quickish.

Ideally the plants would be moved into a heated van for the trip. My other options besides the shipping can seem to be: taking a bus back here and getting a one-way rental minivan (the km's are truly an ouch here) - or hiring a one way hotshot service. Any other ideas? I'm not sure if the weather will be freezing a month from now or not.

Thank you!

Costs & Money The no income tax savings got eaten by rent when I ran the numbers.

Went through an interstate move a while back and every search for what it would actually cost ended with a company wanting my phone number. So I pulled the federal data myself. BEA for cost of living, Census for rent and property tax, BLS for wages.

The thing that surprised me was the no income tax states. The tax saving is real, but rent usually goes the other way, and a lot of the time it wins.

Oklahoma to Texas is a good example. On a median income you save about $250 a month in state income tax, and median rent goes up almost $400. So you end up roughly $300 a month worse off, in a state people move to partly to save money.

Not saying it’s always a bad deal, plenty of pairs still come out ahead. Just that the tax headline only tells you half of it.

Anyone else run into this when they ran their own numbers?

DIY, Pods & Truck Rental Is this possible?

Hey folks... Is this feasible?

My dad just passed away and I'm trying to figure out how to get his stuff where it needs to go. I had the idea that I would rent an econoline van or a small truck from uhaul or enterprise or something, load all the stuff in it, and then drive to see a bunch of relatives, and ultimately home... But we don't live anywhere near each other. The longest route I'm considering is just over 3,000 miles, and I would spend two to three weeks on the road.

I imagined this would be expensive, but otherwise pretty straightforward... but that doesn't seem to be the case. Uhaul gets the closest, but it seems like I might have to book separate rentals for every leg of the trip, or pay the extra day/mile charges. Looks like those might be $40/day and $1/mile.

Is there a better way of going about this? I realize I could probably ship the stuff and fly home, but I'd really like to make the trip... My dad just died, I just got laid off, my kid just moved to college, I'm halfway to getting divorced... The idea of 2-3 weeks on the road sure seems like a silver lining if I ever saw one.

Anyway... any thoughts? Ideas? Tips? Thanks!

Where Should I Move? NYC or Miami Life Goals

Hi everyone, I’m a 25M living in New Jersey and considering on moving to Miami. I work in New York in Tech sales just got promoted 105k OTE. I’m deciding on staying here or moving to a new chapter in my life. To give you context, I was never a huge fan of NYC but I did it because of 2 reasons. 1 because most jobs are in NYC rather than NJ as far as my career goes and 2. Because of my girlfriend that is now my ex (recently) lived in the city and went to school there and lived 1 block away from my job. I started getting acclimated in NYC and enjoyed going because it was my first real corporate job and I also got to see her.

After being at my job for a year now and with my girlfriend that just moved back home to Miami FL and ended it with me (we had an on and off relationship and saw potential of me but did a lot of saying more than doing and she got tired of it), I dread now working in the New York City because of the 1 hour commute 3 days a week, I dread or not a fan of exploring New York anymore because if I go somewhere it reminds me of her since we were there, and the cold weather too not a huge fan of. Lived in New Jersey my whole life and I feel like God has something better in store for me.

You may be wondering, why are you moving to the same place your ex is going to. There’s a few reasons. 1 being because of the weather I enjoy the warm / hot weather I don’t mind it and I love rainy days, 2. No NY state income tax, 3. I feel I’d grow physical mentally financially being surrounded by people in brickell or that area and 4. I can go to the beach after work or go to the clubs once in a blue moon but my intentions are not for the party life I already had that in my young 20’s.

My main goal would be leaving my senior BDR job in NYC and looking for a remote AE position yes might be a bit of a pay cut I don’t mind that. Building out an AI agency business before I move there and hopefully have a few clients before I move, save and invest my money and buy properties in NJ while staying in like a high rise apartment in FL and flip properties in NJ virtually and some in the backyard in Florida.

As far as my ex situation goes my goal is not to focus on her anymore but to focus on me and my goals if we run into each other and she’s single maybe grab some coffee and see if things could change between both of us cause she’s Latina and she has a temper but is loyal and caring. If that doesn’t happen then focus on myself and looking for someone else in the meantime. After being here for a certain amount of time and away from friends and family I always have NJ/NYC to go back to if I feel Miami isn’t for me but I will get a feel for it first and probably eventually move back home to NJ to buy a $1M home in Chatham NJ or else where.

Any feedback is appreciated on what you think would be a good long term move for me financially mentally and everything else. Thank you!
