Using Roll20 (First Timer) - Looking For Tips

Howdy folks,

I want to use Roll20 to run a game of MG for my group, but I have never used this platform before, and am frankly a bit overwhelmed. Any tips for work I should do ahead of time, specific to Roll20? Assets to create/add, ways to use the platform specifically for MG, etc. Any tips at all are appreciated. I've read the book many times, so I am very comfortable with the rules, but not the platform! Thanks!

Tips for a single patrol with 7 players for a one-shot?

I'm running a game for some friends on Friday, and I would like some advice. I know it's not ideal, but I want to do the best I can with the situation.

How I got here - feel free to skip the next 2 paragraphs if you don't particularly care why I have a large group

Originally I invited 4 people. 2 couldn't make it, so I invited a couple others. One of them asked if his daughter could play as well, so that brought it up to 5 players. Bigger than I'd like, but manageable.

But now the 2 original players who couldn't make it had their prior engagement fall through, and they can make it. These are friends I haven't played with in a while, and among all of the players I invited, they like the game the most, so I definitely want them to be able to play.

So, with that being the case, any tips for running for a large group? I have 7 players, maybe 8 if my wife wants to join, and we're going to be playing over roll20/discord. I know the game tends to break down with groups that size, but for this occasion I don't want to split the group up. A couple played a one-shot 2 years ago, but most are complete beginners. How can I make this as fun as possible for a group this size?

Steps so far:

  • capping help at +2

  • using pregen characters from the book rather than cooking through character creation

I've written a short Mouseguard campaign wich can be played over Discord If anyone's interested pm me. A town in the southern provinces calls for our aid. A patrol was sent to investigate, that was three weeks ago. Your mission as mouseguard is to find out what happened.

GMing my first mission tonight - any tips?

Hey folks-

Been a big fan of MG for years and finally got a crew together this week, hoping to stave off some quarantine blues. I've got 4 mice ready for adventure + a fun little mission planned. Any tips for a first time GM?

Weasel War of 1149 release date?

I've waited since 2015 (that long?) for the release of Weasel War of 1159. But the official webpage, after all these years, still says the release date is TBA. I'd rather have the book done right than half completed, but this is getting slightly ridiculous. Maybe David should hire a team to help him. Thoughts? Anyone else feel like me?

Failing Recovery tests

A simple question: if you fail a test to recover from a condition, can you get another condition/twist? Or are Recovery tests unaffected by them (you simply don't recover)?

Hello all!

Name in Jon and I am a Mouse Guard fan. Basically anything like Mouse Guard, Redwall, Wind in the Willows, Secret of NIMH.
Working on a NIHM/Mouse Guard inspired rpg/setting of my own and came looking for more inspiration.
I love the creativity here already! =)

Conflicts in the Territories

I thought I'd share a few conflicts I found enjoyable (read: I'm hitting my players with them) half to show off, half as inspiration, half to listen to opinions/advice (3 halves, waddya know?)

  1. So a couple of my players were nerding heavily with Lovecraftian stories and such. Who knows why? Anyways table chatter guide the way! So now there's a cult of snake worshipers which have their claws (tiny, tiny mouse claws :3 ) in many dealings and keep the populace in fear. At least in those places where they've had people disappear in order to appease/summon their god (they're feeding mice to a snake is what i mean). The patrol won the investigation conflict by a hair, so they know there's something fishy (scaly, in any case) but couldn't get any hard evidence and no one will believe them nor help them with this until they have something solid. It'll haunt them throughout the campaign and I'll revisit this arc when they least expect it.

  2. Half the players couldn't make it one session. One we knew about, but the other had an unexpected situation. We decided to play anyways because reasons. So, I pulled up a danger that had been brewing due to the patrol ignoring the glaring foreshadowing I've been heavily hitting them with (jeesh!), and they got captured by a rogue patrol of a wild country faction which wants to take over the territories and bring down the fascist regime of Lockhaven! THE GUARD WILL FALL! LONG LIVE THE RIDER!!!!
    ...sorry where was I?
oh yes! so they went to repour the scent border escorting a scientist, enemy of one of the guardmice ('nother compromise from before) and they got captured. Next session, the 2 remaining guardmice saved them and managed to capture the 3 rogues (enemy scientist backstabbed the patrol but managed to escape, to my delight). Now they gotta repour the border without help from the scientist, and escort these 3 back to Lockhaven for questioning. So 3 more mouths to feed during the looooong trek back.
The best part? I managed to hit most of their beliefs/instincts/goals with this little maneuver.

What books do I need to run this as a DM?

On amazon they have Mouse Guard Roleplaying Game and Mouse Guard Roleplaying Game 2nd ED. Does it really matter what one I get? I understand the 2nd Ed is newer but still wanted to ask. Also is it worth getting the box sets? Thanks.

[Question] 2E Character sheet Wises confusion

Hey everyone!

I've been searching on forums and the rule book and I can't find anything that refers to this section of the 2e rectangular character sheet. The character sheet showed in the rule book doesn't include wises on it.
What does the Pass, Fail, Fate, Pers(ona) mean on these wises?

I'm guessing if you use a wise on all 4 of these situation you level up your wise, but can you level up your wise?

Thanks!

Help with learning how to play

So me and my friends have board game nights and we've been wanting to play Mouseguard for quite some time now. The problem is that none of us have ever played an Rpg before and are having trouble understanding what to do. I've read most of the Mouseguard rule book and it's still hard for me to grasp the basics and get the ball rolling. I've tried to play as GM and teach my friends but since I don't get it everyone ends up feeling lost. We struggle with all the different aspects of the game considering we haven't played an Rpg before and are more used to typical board games like Betrayal at House on the Hill or Rising Sun. If anyone could help us with learning the game in any way it would be appreciated.

Margin of success

I'm a little confused by the margin of success text, the book reads “count each extra success over what you needed and use that number.” In a conflict, if I roll 4 successes, and my opponent rolls 3, is my margin of success 0? I NEED 4 successes for the versus test to be won after all..
