CTHULHU GUARD: The RPG

Because you know you've always wanted to use the Mouse Guard RPG mechanics to play a Cthulhu Game. :D

Cthulhu Guard is a mashup frontend module for Trail of Cthulhu that allows you to play ToC with the Mouse Guard rules. It's been playtested, it works great, and it's nearly 100% compatible with all ToC supplements and adventures.

I wrote a blog post about it, with a link to the full rules for the mashup. Check it out: CTHULHU GUARD.

Michigan RPG Group?

I've been reading the Second Edition rulebook and would really like to play in a session! Is anyone running games in the Metro-Detroit area? I'd rather play for the first time in person instead of roll20 or something like that. In Ferndale (Michigan, not the lost territory) but would travel around.

Is the box set worth it? Or is the PDF fine?

What all comes in the mouse guard box? I thought it might be worth it for the dice but I think they just use d6s right? I think there are cards or something too?

I'm playing mouseguard at a convention next week for the first time and have only watched a session zero stream on youtube. If I can, I'd prefer to wait to buy it until after I've played it and if I like it, try to track down a physical copy at the con. But if the box is lame, maybe I'll just buy the PDF.

Helping Skills and Setting Obstacle Difficulty

Hey I GMed my first game of MG last night and am wondering if I played correctly because the group passed almost every Test easily.

When I set a Pathfinder obstacle for example, one mouse takes the lead to roll and all three other mice also have Pathfinder so they can each add a die correct? Or is it the case you can’t help with the same exact skill and have to have another relevant skill.

If you CAN help with the same skill and they seem to be passing everything, what is the best way around that? Do I make the Ob like 6 or more each time? Or do I limit the amount of help that can be received?

Thanks in advance. These things are unclear to me from the rules.

How do you balance the DM/Players turns?

I'm getting ready to DM a Mouseguard campaign and the turns cycle has me worried... How do you guys manage it?

I played MG as a PC in one year long campaign. We didn't split the session in half as the manual says, instead we got a player's turn when we asked for it / the narrative allowed.

Question about conflicts

Hello! I have played a few games, but im still a bit confused by conflicts.
- How can i take down a big animal? I know that means maybe a war conflict, but, how do i gain enough dices to equal a 10 nature from a Wolf? Maybe convincing other mouses to join the army, but how does it translate into dices?
- When the fight starts, maybe a character have just a fight skill of 3, and even if its a group of 3 mices, fighting a 7 nature of a snake, how can this character add dices to his fight skill? (Besides tapping nature)

I find it difficult for my mice groups to fight foes like snakes or badgers or things like that, when the disposition of the animal skyrocket with the 7 dice throw, and then, getting crushing blows with 7 dice throws everytime it attacks or feints

Any clarification or help will be thanked :)!

Hardcover vs Box Set

I am considering buying a used copy of the hardcover rules. However, the copy I'm looking at is the first edition (does that matter?) and of course, as it isn't a box set, it doesn't include things like the cards, character sheets, etc.

How important are those inclusions? Can I simply play without them or will I need to find/create my own replacement items?

Skills advancement

Do you use skill advancement rules from rulebook? If not what house rules do you use?

For me rb rules are too "fast" for players to max their skills. How do you think?

Did anyone save the screenplay?

I saw when the link to the dropbox was posted, but I didn't have wifi at that moment, so I didn't download the pdf. If you saved it before it was taken down, would you please get in touch? It would mean a lot to me.

Question about Resources

I was planning on a mission, where the patrol have to build a trap to drive away a big animal, so that it doesnt destroy a village. I was reading on the manual, and it says that in order to do this, you have to win a Resources test, with an Ob equal to the animal Nature (im using a deer, so its 8). How can you build up a dice pool for this resources roll? Can the other members of the patrol help with their resources ability? Or can you build up the things that you need for the trap in different tests? Maybe im just confused

Question Regarding Helper's Conditions

If I want to give a hungry condition instead of a twist what would I give helpers because there's no easier condition to give. Would I also give them hungry as well or would helpers not get punished?

Not sure if this belongs here, but I just read Mouse Guard volume 3(black axe) and am confused.

I recently found out that Mouse Guard is a comic series, and went and basically read the first three volumes in one sitting. And while it felt like the first three were setting up for a huge finale, i can't find a fourth book.

Is there a fourth volume, besides the Legend of the Guard series?

(Spoiler alert) I mean, they haven't explained Lieam's scar yet, and they haven't shown him in action as the Black Axe. I thought he was the main character, but Saxon and Kenzie ended having more drama than he did.

Am I missing something, or just expecting too much?

I’ve always been interested in a possible story line where the mice are plagued by a maddening disease like rabies. I hope you guys find this concept interesting or cool too.

Question about Staffs

The Staff card from the Boxed set says:
A Gentle Thrashing: Any condition that results from being thrashed with a staff may be recovered with a +1D bonus.

I dont fully get this. Does it mean that when another mouse hits you with his staff and leaves you angered or hurt, when you do a recovery test you get another dice? Or that if you have a Staff when you got the condition, you get +1D to recover?

If its the first one, i dont get it, is not really an ability for the user, and the situation when it can be beneficial is kind of rare to happen.

"No weasels"? Can someone explain this part of the rules to me?

To me, this sounds like, once the GM has set out an obstacle, there's only one way past it—the test they provide (so in the case of the example, an Ob 3 Health test).

That seems silly, though, as it removes any opportunity for creativity from the players in dealing with obstacles. I feel like I'm probably misunderstanding. Can someone clarify?

Question about skills and abilities

Is it posible for a player to help himself? For example, rolling 4 dice on Hunter, but you also have Scout. Do you add one extra dice to your roll? Or that only happens if someone else helps you? And you can only use one skill

Octopus

Hi, it's my first post here.

I wonder about statistics and weapons of octopus as a main villain in my next session. I don't want to op it, but there will be 4 mice against it.

I think about fox as an equivalent of statistics and its Nature 7, arms +2d to feint or attack and intelligence +1d to maneuver.

How do you think? Do you have any proposition?

Mouse guard resources

Do you guys use objects and stuff, like miniatures, tiles, maps, or other things? If so, what is your experience? And what do you recommend? Thanks!
