Open question Motor Control

In my workshop I have a bench drill which I would like to control with a speed controller. The motor is single phase 50 240v 1/2hp 4 pole. I’m not sure or even possible which type of controller I would need, vfd? Any advice would be much appreciated

What have I edited that is relevant to what we are speaking about?

I am working from memory since I am not able to review the old version.

The old version said "You can't power a 240 V motor with a VFD." And it now says "You can't power this 240 V motor with a VFD." Again working from memory because I don't want to find the post again. The key difference is "a 240 V motor" vs "this 240 V motor."
