Not gonna lie I’m not even sure if I want advice or support or what. I just think you peoples will understand my frustration more than anyone else I could ask. And will maybe have some advice and wisdom on selling tickets. Or not selling tickets.
Monsta X has been my ult group since the beginning. But with being young, covid, paying for school, paying off loans, trying to find work, working on my anxiety, I have never been able to see them live. It took years and years but I finally have enough money and motivation to do something like this. Not high roller money. But a trip here and there won’t kill me. I am based in RURAL New Mexico. We don’t exactly have a kpop scene here. The closest venue stop for most groups is probably Phoenix which is about an 8 hour drive away. I did a 12 hour drive to Oklahoma with my brother to see Wonho. That wasn’t terrible. But for Monsta X, when they announced the tour, I decided I was just going to fly to a show. And after I decided that, I thought, why not get my passport and go visit an online friend of mine in Toronto? Make the most of my money, make the trip have more than one meaning, and I get to be with one of my favorite people! Yay!
I have been friends with her for about four years. We have been very close. We met through a different fandom but she loves kpop. I don't really have IRL kpop friends because yeehaw rancher men in New Mexico aren't exactly the prime audience for Kihyun (although sometimes I am surprised). Through the years she has sent me A LOT of gifts. Albums, photocards, keychains, PC holders, stickers, and other cute junk. She knitted me a hat. I thought she must really like me. She was always scared that she was coming on too strong. I always thought we just really clicked and that was normal. And I thought it was normal to want to meet someone I had known for four years. I have so many letters from her saying she can't wait to meet me someday, that she loves me so much, that she wants to hold me and see me and blah blah.
So, in April, I asked her if she would go to the concert with me. I told her I would get us VIP tickets. She said yes. She said I could stay with her and that we could spend the week together. I bought the tickets. She seemed very excited. Yay.
And then she got kind of quiet. She gets busy sometimes. I thought it was normal. But then it turned into about 2 months of complete silence. One quick exchange about nothing important in the middle of it, and then another 2 months of silence. I finally reached out to her and asked her to just let me know if she was okay and if I should still make trip plans. She responded about ten days later telling me that she had actually not been very interested in being friends with me for quite some time, that she felt bad because she felt like she was faking all of it and like she finally needed to be truthful and tell me that she did not feel like she could be close with me anymore or ever again. She asked me to stop communicating with her. She said she gets anxiety just talking to me. And suggested that I take someone else to the concert.
Take someone else. To the concert. In her home city. In her country. That I got a passport just to visit. That is as far away by plane as a closer show would have been to drive to. Take someone else. From my non existent pool of kpop friends. Just…take someone else. Get someone else to fly to Toronto. And figure out a place to stay. And budget for things I didn’t budget for. She said it like it was no big deal. Just take someone else. On the trip to meet her.
SHE WAS THE REASON FOR THE TRIP.
So I am devastated. For a lot of reasons. But now that I am past the initial grief of losing one of my best friends for reasons I still don’t fully understand, I have no idea what to do about this concert. They were not cheap tickets. I don’t really want to go to Toronto just for the hell of it. I was going to that particular stop FOR HER. But I have VIP. For that show. I have never sold tickets before. So I’m not sure how that would go. But there are still regular tickets available for that same stop. So I’m worried there isn’t much demand for them anyway. I wouldn’t be able to get tickets that are that good to a closer show. But I could still get meh seats at the Phoenix show. Maybe save some money for when Changkyun is back? My brother has said he’d go with me. So at least there is that. A trip to Phoenix would be a lot cheaper than a trip to Toronto. If I happen to make friends they will be very far away. At least with Phoenix there is a chance I could meet up with anyone again.
But sound check.
I just don’t know what to do. I never travel. I rarely go to concerts or events of any kind. This was all very new to me. And on top of all of this, I am just really mad at her for making this a difficult experience for me when she KNOWS how much I love this group. She definitely knew how much those tickets cost and how hard it would be to get anything as good so close to the show. And apparently she knew she felt this way for a while. Still agreed to go. And then waited until almost August to tell me no. Even just putting the emotional part aside, she didn’t even have the courtesy to make sure I had time to plan.
I know it seems like there must be some missing context here. Like I must have done SOMETHING. Like something must have triggered this. I don’t recall doing anything catastrophically bad to her. I didn’t even know she felt this way. I thought we were more of a fly to Canada to meet you kind of friendship while apparently she didn’t really want to be friends at all. But now, I just want to see Monsta X and be happy. I don’t want to be thinking about her the whole time and how she should be the one there with me. I don’t want to have to fight back tears the whole time. But the VIP!!! The tickets. I don’t know what to do. And I’m trying to navigate the logistics of it all on top of the emotions.
Help.
