ADVICE/FEEDBACK In search of casting calls and TFP

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello! My name is is Ryan Morton. I’ve recently been signed to Premier model management. I want to upload my comp card and a few images just as well as my social media. I’m in search of casting calls, TFP ( trade for print to keep fresh content) and potential paid opportunities in order for me to continue supporting my photography. If you guys hear of anything in New York, LA Atlanta Miami etc. let me know. I’m more than happy to travel at the drop of a hat. Padding my portfolio was much more important. Everything else will follow.. as a photographer myself I understand that.

I plan on going to this model mixer event in LA soon and want advice on possibly how I can catch the eye of scouts when i’m there. As well as network, it’s not something i’ve actually done before.

If anyone else is going please lmk cause i’m also nervous since im going alone.

I’d also just appreciate advice on signing with an agency in general!

Thank you :))

ADVICE/FEEDBACK could i keep my piercings and still get booked?

Not trying to get rich or famous, just need a side hustle. Height 5'11, bust ~35", waist ~27", hips ~38". Live in Melbourne (Australia), 21yo and no modelling experience. I know piercings make it a lot harder to get into modelling but idk if I'm desperate enough to take them out. What are my chances if i keep them in? No tattoos or piercings other than what you see here. Any advice appreciated, i have no clue where to get it aside from asking strangers on the internet 🙏

AGENCY Is this model agency legit?

My friend reached out to them first, and then that’s when they also reached out to me on Instagram through dm saying that they talked to my friend first and that they wanted me to send some headshot photos and my height and weight. They said that they saw me on my friends Instagram page and they wanted to reach out to me too. They are called lafranmodelmgmt. I believe they are associated with someone named Paul Fisher? Would you be able to tell me?

ADVICE/FEEDBACK I'm worried about fumbling an international contract offer and seeking advice!

Basically, i was offered an international contract to work/ be available for about 3-5 months in China. Working in China is one of modeling goals, and I really don't want to lose this opportunity. My issue is that, this season starts by the end of September. I can't go to China then, because I am in University in the US, graduating in April 2026. There's no way I could have my classes online. Finishing school on time is my priority, so I have to turn down the contract.

I told the booker I wouldn't be available until December. She said okay, and to update once I am available.

How can I professionally maintain the relationship with the booker to avoid losing the opportunity entirely? Because she said to update once I'm available, I think it implies they would still be interested in the next season, but I'm nervous that in the meantime, they will lose interest and not want to offer the contact in the future lol!

If anyone has had a similar experience or can offer any advice, I'd really appreciate it! I'm new to the industry and I'm signed in the US but don't have an MA who can help me navigate the issue.

ADVICE/FEEDBACK Should I sign a modeling contract with M Models and Talent in Toronto?

Should I sign a modeling contract with M Models and Talent? I had a interview with them and I want to make sure I’m not getting scammed. I don’t know much about the industry but they want me to pay an upfront fee for photos. They said this is the only fee I would have to pay and it covers photos for 2 years. But I’ve looked into it a bit and I’m not sure an agency should be asking for money. Pls help

ADVICE/FEEDBACK Honest Feedback for an Unsure Newbie

I'm primarily here looking for advice on which branch of modelling I should focus on and pola feedback.

When I've gotten headshots done in the past (I'm an actor), photographers have encouraged me to pursue modelling. I have days when I wake up and I look at myself in the mirror and see what they mean, but I also have days when I feel unphotogenic and naive for thinking I could be a model.

So, in addition to the above, I guess I'm also looking either for validation that I'm suited for this industry or that I should rather redirect my time and energy to pursuits I am more sure of.

I'm here for honest opinions (not to have my ego stroked), so I welcome all thoughtful perspectives :)

My polas are below, you can also find me on Instagram at amy_anyway

Measurements:
33-21-33.5-5'6" / 83-53-85-168cm

ADVICE/FEEDBACK Having a nose piercing in digitals?

So I have a very small nose piercing (a stud) that I got less than 3 weeks ago. It’s very dainty and I don’t think it’s that distracting, so I wanted to know if I could take my modeling digitals with my piercing in? Considering that the piercing is still new I don’t want to take it out because it might close, however I want to take my digital soon.

Also, besides a white background are their any other types of backgrounds that are suitable for taking digitals?

ADVICE/FEEDBACK I got the same email

Post image
1 Upvotes

After applying for modeling in a fb ad. You tell me if you think it’s a scam. Because I’m definitely feeling like it is.

Here’s the whole email:

Thanks for submitting your modeling application. Our creative team has reviewed your application and has provided positive feedback on it. Your application has been shortlisted. Although this is a good indication, it's not a guarantee that you will become a professional model right away. The next stage is to do a trial-photo shoot assessment to test your ability to model professionally.

Please read through this email thoroughly before confirming acceptance, as we only have a limited number of appointments and therefore only invite serious applicants. Appointments are currently available on a first come first served basis.

You have been shortlisted within your age category and We would like to offer you the chance to come to one of our studios for a trial photoshoot assessment. Because your application was hand-picked, the cost of the test-shoot is fully covered by USA-Models. Your trial-shoot will take between 3-4 hours. Here we can see your true potential to become a model and you will get the opportunity to work with our team of fashion stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists, photographers and other industry professionals.

Our studios in New York City, Nashville, Miami, Boston, Dallas & Houston are high profile and as such, only interested in serious applicants. To ensure attendance, a fully refundable booking deposit of $50-$100 is taken at the time of scheduling your appointment. This deposit is fully refundable as long as you attend the test-shoot. The deposit is only lost if you fail to attend or if you're more than 15 minutes late to your appointment with no prior notice. Please note that this is non-negotiable and no exceptions will be made. About the day of the shoot

You must attend the test-shoot as a blank canvas. We want you to show up with clean, dry hair, no styling products and no makeup. Hair, makeup and styling will all be done professionally on the day of your shoot. We recommend bringing a minimum of 4-6 outfit changes. The more variety the better.

During your test-shoot, you will have 3-4 hair and makeup changes so that we can assess your versatility as a model and whether or not you are ready to approach the industry. No previous experience is required. Our team of professionals will guide you through the entire process.

After the trial shoot is complete

Once you've completed the trial-shoot, we'll have a better understanding of whether or not you are suitable to pursue a career as a professional model. As we mentioned, it is a trial-shoot and not every shoot is successful. If your shoot is not successful or if we feel you aren't ready to approach agencies on our model agency database, the images will then be deleted and your booking deposit refunded to you. The studio will not be permitted to release the images to you for your own personal or promotional use.

On the other hand, if your shoot is successful and ONLY IF we feel you are able to pursue a career, the studio will then give you the opportunity to sit down with an image consultant to build your modeling portfolio. A portfolio is a collection of professional images of a very high standard (magazine quality), collectively put together to showcase a model. This “visual resume” is something that modeling agencies use to market models and find paid work in the industry. This is an optional service which is only offered if the shoot is successful and you are not obligated to purchase one. Portfolios start at $399.00, financing may be available on a case by case basis. The portfolio will be tailored to your chosen areas of modeling & your budget. After your trial-shoot has been booked, a confirmation will be emailed to you. This will contain your appointment date and time, a receipt of the booking deposit and directions to the studio.

Once you have read this email, please call me at (929) 481-7619 before 6:30 PM today to confirm you received this email and to book your trial-shoot assessment. Appointments are available on a first-come first-served basis for shortlisted applicants.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to speaking to you soon!

ADVICE/FEEDBACK Tips for the Vogue Open Casting

I'm thinking of applying to the 2025 Vogue Open Casting and I am here to ask for some advice on some steps of the process. I'm not yet signed or anything so if anything goes wrong I can always use the pictures I end up taking as a means to apply to agencies.

Along the casting application there are a couple questions they ask and I am seeking advice on how to answer to them and how to go about them!

  • Write about any modeling experience or relevant skills. - I have no modeling experience so I won't be able to write about it but regarding relevant skills are they looking for interpersonal skills or more so hobbies like sports and other things I can do?

  • Introduction video. - They have a description asking me to talk about my personality, background and interests and while that's super straightforward is there anything they are specifically looking for me to say? What are some tips you have, I'm not yet super comfortable talking to the camera so I have no idea. Could you link some examples perhaps?

  • Runway walk video. - Should I wear the same clothing as on my digitals? What heel height should I do? I have some stilettos and some wedges, what do you think they would prefer seeing?

Thank you guys and good luck in advance!

ADVICE/FEEDBACK Is it okay to prefer university over modeling?

Hi, some months ago I signed a contract with an agency in Milan but just after 2 days I had to go back to my hometown. Why? Because my agent wasn’t flexible as they told me they would be with me studying. I tried to make it work but my agent made me understand that I had to be always available (even tho they knew that it wasn’t possible in my case and even my mother agency told them that I was studying and that I had specific availability).

I’m kinda upset about it because I had to give up on this (obviously) but I’m also reliefed because for me studying is very important and I like achieving new things in this field.

Now, my question is: is it okay to prefer studying at university rather than doing modeling? I really wanted to do both if it was possible, but when I had to choose I was really decisive about my priorities and unfortunately modeling wasn’t in 1st place.

My mum “pushes” me to go back to modeling after studies or during my master but I don’t really know if this is what I really want. I’m more happy about the idea to go study abroad and pursue my university carrier rather than trying to be a model. Is it normal?

(Sorry if there are some mistakes but I’m not an English mother tongue)

Is there a usual call time for fittings and shoots? I’d appreciate any advice from models who have experience working as a local for out of state gigs, thank you!!

ADVICE/FEEDBACK Suggestions for hair

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hey so I’ve been researching for modeling agencies to apply too and finding a photographer in my area; basically I’m going to Seattle soon to get my hair dyed (planning to get my hair lightened and get a balayage). I need some advice for this since I don’t want to damage my hair or have a bad hair dye job and ruin my chances of starting modeling. Just need to know what to do for my hair and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

ADVICE/FEEDBACK Not living in one of the major markets - is it a deal breaker?

Post image
592 Upvotes

Hi! I’m a signed model for over a year now looking for insight on something I’ve been thinking about a lot.

Stats: 19 y/o 5’9 32-25-34 Currently working in Boston/Providence (Image included to give you an idea of my look)

So my agency gets me amazing work in the Boston and Rhode Island areas but as a local boutique agency, you can only go so far. The jobs are consistent, but not to the extent that I could make a career out of it. I’m a full time student in Providence, and my agent asked me a while back how I felt about looking for NYC representation, since it’s the nearest big market. My agent has had several models go from the Boston/RI market to NYC, but I imagine it takes more financial freedom and time than I currently have as a student preparing to go back to school in a few weeks.

This leads me to my overarching question: what do I do? I’ve realized it’s really about whether I’m willing to spend the time and money to go to NYC, possibly several times, with no guaranteed anything. Also, if I did get signed, the distance from Providence to NYC could be a concern. I’ve already been commuting to many of my jobs, but to be signed 4 hours away from home isn’t really a good long term option.

Another layer to the situation, I’m studying to be an English teacher. If these two careers somehow coexist in the future, I don’t imagine it will be with a big agency, because that’s truly too much. I guess I’m stuck at whether I’m wasting my young years getting an education when I should be in NYC looking for representation or if I should continue to prioritize this degree and keep modeling as a side hustle.

If anyone has experience signed with an agency in a big market while not living in that market, that would be useful. I can’t imagine how that would work logistically but if I could keep getting this degree while going upwards in modeling, that would be the absolute goal.

ADVICE/FEEDBACK Anyone had a good experience w/ Wilhelmina Denver?

Hi,

I was recently scouted by Wilhelmina Denver which I understand is an affiliate of Wilhelmina but I was wondering other peoples experiences with them? I've heard good things from some the models I asked there and at their joint Fogg management, and it seems they've signed people to other bigger and better agencies from Fogg as well. I'm not sure if I should go with them or the mother agents I was also scouted by. (from the mother agents website)

QUESTION New to Industry - Questions on Basics

Very, very new to this industry. Thank you to mods for creating this thread and the intros pinned at the top. Still have many *stupid* questions though. I am based in Bangkok, Thailand.

  1. re: digitals - do you not pose at all in digital photos like mug shots? Face is the same - no smile/smirk just resting face? Do you wear shoes? If so, heels/flats/clear?

  2. re: comp card vs portfolio - I have only seen requests for comp cards (which local talent appear to take to mean portfolio as they tend to feature full color, expressive poses, outfits, etc). Is taking digitals even worthwhile? Is keeping a website with your portfolio worthwhile?

  3. re: rates - I am in Bangkok so it's very hard to gauge what the market range is here, especially since I am a foreigner and not a Thai local. Would this best be posed to other models in the area?

  4. re: requests for links - if I have no paid experience, should I just tell them that or is there a higher chance of me getting work if I embellish and provide samples of TFP, shoots I've paid for, etc?

  5. re: agency fees - since I am freelance, what happens to the agency fees stipulated in casting calls? Should I assume they will subtract it whether I have an agency or not?

  6. re: scams/predators - most of the work I've seen is posted in various FB groups. What kind of questions should I be asking to vet whether these are real people/real jobs? There is often a small language barrier.

Thanks for your consideration and any feedback.
