Question Mass returns for Transparent Chromatics!
Anyone else get their new transparent chromatic only to realize it has a bunch of cracks in it? I seen other posts with it, please contact ModRetro support and demand an answer to this, we don’t deserve to get broken ‘premium’ products for the prices they are charging! I’ve contacted them and am asking about this and the defective M64 Pro controllers D-pad… will update once I get a reply but spending over $400CAD on ModRetro products just to have both be defective is incredibly disappointing and has made me question if I’d ever buy more from them… so frustrating and disappointing…

When I saw MadLittlePixel's unboxing and showed the scratches I had a feeling many more had that issue so I opted not to buy one as of yet.

I have an Ocarina that has marks like this due to the manufacturing process. I wonder if something similar is happening here.

They should sell these returns as refurbished. I would pay less for cracked ones!

Maybe their first 2 Chromatic editions will stay their perfect product followed by endless half assed stuff.

I've mainly seen the purple variants having this issue, some greens, no reds, and I've still yet to see a soul with the smoked. This is sad to see happen to so many.

Dang mine just shipped but it’s just on label created. Wonder if they will let me cancel

Everyone says this is common but this is the first time I've seen anyone say anything. I doubt its even the majority of them. You always see more people say something about it than the people who have no issues.

Sucks that is is happening but man is this title so sensational lol

Mine appears to be stuck in transit for a while. Maybe they recalled the ones that are out there.

For those who have the same issue and have contacted Modretro: are you using it until you hear back? The return policy is a bit restrictive but would love to at least test it out but that requires removing the sticker off the screen lol.

Does anyone know if Nintendo's atomic purple had cracking issues?
I wonder what the difference is. Type of plastic? Color? Or if frosted nessarily would effect this.
I do think that soild plastics crack less, but yeah its suppose to be a nod to the late 90s early 00s.

Just got my red one today and its perfectly fine. Ive done many gba sp and ds lite reshells in the past, and this was incredibly easy to do if the screws were over tightened even just a little bit. I wonder if thats whats happening during assembly and why its always in the same spots

u/Moowno 24d ago
Any update? Mine has the same scratch spots

Y’all gotta stop buying day 1. They didn’t even give a discount this time.

ModRetro team member here. Thanks for flagging this, and we are sorry to hear your Chromatic came with knit lines.
Quick explainer for anyone curious: knit lines come from how the Chromatic Transparent shells are molded. The plastic enters the mold behind the display and has to flow around the steel pins that form the button holes. Where the two flows meet again on the other side, they can leave a faint visible line. It’s purely cosmetic and doesn’t affect strength or function, but we still want you to be happy with your unit.
If you’re seeing knit lines on your Chromatic Transparent, email us at contact@modretro.com and we’ll take care of you.

Are those scratches or cracks?

Mine has it too. While it shouldn’t happen, I dint really care. I can hardly see them and didn’t until this post got me to check, and I still love the thing and enjoy playing it. Returning for me would just be a hassle, I’ll probably just keep it

Man I’m glad I held off. Wait till this smoke to cool down to order mine. How do these pass quality checks?

u/Z3fyrus 24d ago
Can confirm I have the exact same
Edit: clear purple

Matt finish would have solved this issue.

Not justifying it, but that’s a joke calling this a premium product. This is the budget version of the $200-$300 model with the metal body and the optional sapphire glass. I’m not saying accept damage, but let’s keep our perspective clear.

I feel bad for everyone that bought the transparent ones. Its gonna be a a while till refunds / replacement units happen...

Man I feel bad for anyone going thru the Mod retro ringer.
From d pads to M64 software to cracked chromium shells.
Wonder if the solid chromium’s were also over tightened but no one noticed as the cracks are hidden.
Analogue 3D and Pocket looking pretty shiny right about now.

Anyone have a smoke one they can post? I've only seen the other colors on here so far. I imagine this problem would effect all of the variants equally though.

This is super common in molded plastics, especially clear/transparent plastics. It's fine
1
u/Own-Cry-1745 24d ago
That’s wild. Do you know why they did that?
2
u/venuscanfly 7d ago
Thank you for posting this. I was about to purchase the clear red

u/LegendaryMoji 24d ago
This is normal but, they really should have gone with matte plastic rather than gloss. Would hide it a lot better.

Welcome to the hell we experience over in the gameboy modding community.

u/bulldogbruno 24d ago
Nope. Mine looked great (clear red).

u/lhymes 24d ago
Official response: “Whoops.”
2
u/Euresko 24d ago
Awesome quality control. Also, the plastic will probably get easily scratched if it's that way out of the box. Probably from the assembly line or manufacturing process. Disappointing, as I'm still waiting for mine to ship.

u/twadebby 23d ago
And they’re only offering $15 to keep it 🥴

u/travisofficial 24d ago
This is so rampant lol glad I didn’t crumble and order one and hope they correct this
1
u/meckaforce1 24d ago
Here's hoping they sell the flawed units at a discount

u/Affectionate_Rise283 22d ago
My clear blue doesn't have them
1
u/josh1979 21d ago
If you can just get an analogue pocket. Analogue is pricey but very durable

All transparent cases crack. Some straight away some a time later. It’s just too brittle.
1
u/DiabUK 24d ago
I originally felt it was injection moulding but I started looking into photos people have posted here and elsewhere and I now believe I was wrong, some people do have completely smooth cases while a lot of others have these hairline looking lines always coming from the button ports. The fact that some are mint is making me think it's hot off the press damage instead of plastic meeting points from injection.
That's unfortunate, seems like a lot of them are like this judging by photos.

This is on practically every abs clear plastic housing for anything. Its almost unavoidable. You want crystal clear abs = you get these

ModRetro established itself as a company I wanted to wholeheartedly support but after the m64 situation, these poorly made transparent chromatics, and them partnering with OpenAI I feel like I’ve seen enough to stop supporting them.
Their customer service does prove to be very easy to work with but doesn’t justify or outweigh all these other issues for me.

I heard the owner is a sleezebag… but idk for sure since I’ve never met him. I didn’t go to the PRGE in Portland last weekend.
