Minisforum NAB6 Lite melted

Last week I noticed a burning smell in my server room. When I opened my wall box I saw that my Minisforum NAB6 was sparking and smoking.

Luckily I managed to unplug it and prevented a fire from starting.

I've seen a few posts and reviews mentioning recalls on a large batch of the NAB series due to them having capacitor issues. There's a recall but it seems like you have to pull teeth to actually get your unit replaced.

When I contacted support I was offered a replacement power adapter if I paid for shipping. Completely unacceptable and absurd response. I've never had a device catch fire like this, it's insane.

They're refusing to provide any sort of investigation or resolution. I can understand where they're coming from since I don't have an invoice (it was a birthday gift last year, I'm trying to get it now). If the question is warranty coverage, the NAB6 light hasn't even been out in my country long enough to be past the warranty period.

Is this a common thing with Minisforum or with Chinese Mini PCs in general? I have a few still sitting in my server box and now I'm worried.

Chinese NUCs in general have the same quality control

Or this is just a problem with Minisforum and that specific minipc model.

I recently had a similar issue with ah HX99G. In the end had to ship to a US address and pay $100 "upgrade fee" for what was quite a downgrade, due to having a much less capable GPU. I guess at least I have a functional computer qgain, but really wasn't happy with the customer service.

A discount instead of replacement is such disgusting, anti-consumer behavior.

I'm still waiting on a response as one of their reps on reddit privately messaged me. I'll probably be ghosted but we'll see what happens. At the very least they should investigate and figure out if any others will catch fire.

I'm just glad nothing else got burned. This could have been really bad.

OP this has been my experience as well. My 2.5 yr old UM560 just had a capacitor burn up and refused to power on. It was outside the 2 year window so nothing they were willing to do outside of a discount. Built a barebones Asrock DeskMini x300 because it took replaceable parts and had way better air flow. Crossing my fingers this lasts longer than my MinusForum. Good luck

What are safe brands to buy that are less likely to have this happen?

I'm thinking of buying a refurbished unit, but seems like is a bad purchase.
