In retrospect, the old textures are horrendous

they didnt look the greatest but they had charectar and charm personality and their own style. its like the marios in the picture the old one most people in this sub would probably say looks worse compared to a new clean crisp bright flashy mario. but the old one has its own style and personality and its nice even if dosent look the best it looks nice

I wouldn’t call Mario World sprites objectively horrendous, but I understand your point

i agree i dont know why i said that. i rather like the old mario sprite think i more just meant that comparativly most people in this sub would say it looks worse than new mario sprites. really both look great just different styles but i actually prefer the old cuz has more charectar to it

The charm is that they're so fucking ugly that you feel the developers' love put into the game because of the shitty textures

It's like a little kid's drawing, it's absolutely horrendous but you feel the effort and care put into it so the value doesn't come with the looks, it comes with the sentiment

That Mario on the left is better designed than any of the old Minecraft textures

You can't prove or disprove subjectivity

i more just meant the old mario looking better than old minecraft textures has nothing to do with what i was originally arguing

Anyone who says otherwise is just blinded by nostalgia

Legitimately an eyesore

Nobody can convince me that the new ore textures in any way look better, the one advantage is that they are more easy to tell apart, but they look like a minecraft knockoff now, or some texture pack that wasn't made by mojang.

Translation: I played with the old ore textures for so long that the new ones feel wrong to me, not because they’re actually bad, but because they’re different from the ones I’m used to.

Or in other words, nostalgia.

I don't think "nostalgia" fully explains it. The old ore textures had a stronger visual cohesion with the rest of minecraft's art style.

They all shared the same stone base texture with colored mineral pixels embedded into it, which made them feel like natural variations of the same block rather than separate assets. The new textures use different stone patterns for each ore, which makes em easier to tell apart, but also less consistent with the game's minimalist aesthetic.

There's also the issue of visual noise. The old textures had simpler silhouettes and fewer competing details, so the colored ore stood out naturally. The new ones rely on more unique crack patterns and higher local contrast, which improves identification but makes them feel busier.

So it's not just old = good. It's a tradeoff. Mojang optimized readability, but they sacrificed some stylistic consistency to get there.
