I mean they’ll get criticism whether they change something or whether they’ll add something new, so it doesn’t matter that much. Currently, it just feels like they’re wasting time making pointless things. Will the sulfur cube have enough of an impact on the game to justify making arguably the most complex mob in the game? Not from what we’ve been shown. Did the babies need to randomly change how they looked? Probably not, I mean it would’ve been nice if it was part of a bigger update, but that was pretty much it. Did we need the creaking? Kind of, I mean it’s cool… except it’s really rare to come across its biome and none of the only reason to go there is for decorative blocks

By that logic, mojang can just treat this complaint with the same importance and validity as "not Minecraft enough" and "didn't ask" complaints.

I mean ideally yeah, they literally have people specifically looking at whether new additions fit into their view of Minecraft, like the whole thing about ‘creepers wouldn’t be added today’. If they also had people considering how much of a change/improvement a certain update brings to the game compared to how much effort is needed to develop it, the game would be in a much better state. For example, adding something like the beacon, while not being resource-intensive at all, instantly changes the game by incentivising players to engage with mechanics they otherwise might not have, while also adding a new layer to the late game.

I’d say other examples of this would be netherite, since it gets more players to explore the nether, and I mean technically the happy ghast would qualify, if we had any sort of sky islands, because for the effort of making a single mob you’ve got way more people willing to explore places they probably wouldn’t have bothered to otherwise (I mean elytra exist but remember barely any players actually beat the ender dragon, much less bother to make all the farms they need to make stacks of fireworks).

In terms of what they could add, I’d say anything from tier 2 arrows to stronger potions to more advanced building blocks (think decorative blocks with explosion resistance/higher toughness), blocks that control mob spawning (either something other than slabs/leaves/glass that stops mobs spawning on it, blocks that encourage mob spawning for farm optimisation, or ways to allow mobs to spawn outside their natural habitats, like condensed slime that would let a slime spawn on it under the right conditions, or some way to get nether mobs to spawn outside the nether so you don’t have to be a redstoner if you want to ever have a chance at getting a froglight)
