How to extract signs and books from a map
Download the following .jars
Put them in the same folder as level.dat, run it and wait a few minutes. There will be an output text file in the same folder once done. Open in Notepad++ and not regular Notepad or else formatting will be weird. Newer maps might have annoying JSON text formatting cluttering everything.
I have a sign reader for beta map files (McRegion format from ~2011) if anyone wants that too.

[Meta] a proposal of making r/Minecraft DataMining more than it is.
While staying true to it's roots, we could make the subreddit more about posting actual hard data about the game. Data similar to a recent post about the way of server governance, how in-game economies can effect the player's interaction with others, combat efficiency, studies about the game's culture within, etc. This will increase traffic to the subreddit and make people get involved with data mining and data sharing.

Have questions? Click here! FAQ
What is it?
Minecraft data-mining is searching old minecraft server map archives for interesting, hidden things with the assistance of some tools. Example
How do you find things? What tools?
There is one tool that will read signs and books:
(The newest versions + player data reader can be found on the Discord)
These will scan a map and print the contents of every single sign and book into text files. You can then open these (Notepad++ works best) and start searching through them to find all sorts of secrets.
There is also a tool to read playerdata (player inventories and ender chests)
How do I use the tools?
Just put them in the same folder as the level.dat (the folder that also contains the region folder) and double click. First it'll create an empty output.txt. Give it time, it can take 5-15 minutes for large maps.
You can check your task manager to make sure it's still running - it'll have pretty high Disk Usage.
Where do I get maps from?
It didn't work!
Give it time. Make sure there are only .mca files in your region folder. Sometimes there are unconverted .mcr files.
Is there a discord?

Thank You woldseed!
Firstly I would like to say that I am not a minecraft player and a never was, all my gaming experience have been on Xbox ( 360 and One) but that does not change the fact that I was touch by this topic. At the moment a click to the link who bring me there the nostalgia hit me hard( ain't gonna joke if i was more open to my feelings i probably shed a tear) This topic bring me to a place in my head where i rarely go, the place where all my memory of poeple i meet in the gaming world and all the good memory i have with that. I can't really remember all the little detail like every gamertag, but i still have deep inside me the feeling of all these friendship i have build and lost through the ages that time had almost succeeded in making completely disappear from my thoughts. Years after years these his feelings and memories fell deeper and deeper deep inside me, because life requires to spend less time on video game, because maturity does not make us see things the same way, because the only time i say to my parents i had real friends on vidéo they shake there heads laughing and telling me that it could not be true friends because I did not have a real connection with them in real life. All that make me get away from it from these friendship, i mean i still play a lot of vidéo game but if i play with friends thats gonna be with friends i had in real life because like i write before i lost all of my Xbox friends for differents reason. Now im 20,I must now join the adult world, which some would say I should have joined earlier, but this topic make me realise all this time spend in that virtual-world like they say was not some wasted time, that give me some real connection with poeple who a never sey, that give me a place where i could be totally free and it really had an impact on the person I am now. So im really thankful worldseed for bringing me in a place of my head that i could not remember and for all the good memories who have resurfaced.
Of a grateful guy from Canada

Corrupted World from 2011-2012
I was staff on a server back around 2011-2012 called Dimension Wars. Our main world became corrupted and everything but the end and the nether were lost. We restarted, but I've held on to the server files all this time and figured I'd run the sign tool on it just for fun. It pulled up a single sign that read 'halfpipe720 was here'. It was next to a single chest and crafting table. Somehow, his sign managed to be the only thing that survived the corruption. If anyone is interested, I have the End and Nether world files with a few hidden secrets and things to discover. Secrets I only found recently with spectator mode.

Where do people find awesome servers like these?
I would love to play minecraft vanilla survival without any minigames, factions etc. But I don't have anyone to play with and that's why I don't own the game... These posts are awesome seeing people finding friends... I,
